Martha García Gato Abstract Audiovisual translation (AVT) is a type of translation subjected to numerous constraints. Until now, many studies have been carried out about subtitling and dubbing in films. In musical films, which have been less studied, language transfer is mainly made through songs and, due to their characteristics, their translation is additionally constrained. This article provides some insights into some elements that make translation of songs for dubbing and subtitling a complex task using songs from the musical film My Fair Lady. 6 The Affront of UntranslatabilityDavid GramlingThe Affront of Untranslatability Ten Scenarios David Gramling I too am not a bit tamed, I too am untranslatable. —(Walt Whitman, “Song of Myself”) Non que je cultive l’intraduisible. —(Jacques Derrida, Le Monolinguisme de l’autre: 100) Untranslatability is, already on the face of it, a less-than-amicable dis- course, prone to offence and to disturbing interdisciplinary peace. Now a century and a half since Whitman’s penning of “Song of Myself,” so- called Untranslatables continue to “sound [their] barbaric yawp over the roofs of the world,” whether or not they are appreciated when and where they do so (Whitman [1855] 2016: 183). This chapter is devoted not to repairing the word untranslatability’s accumulated impertinences, but to canvassing a range of typical scenarios that, when viewed collectively, might account for the social effrontery inherent in untranslatability as a concept, a charge or a gesture. This is thus not an apologetic exploration, nor one that sets out to delimit the phenomenon of untranslatability as such—as so many other thoughtful investigations in this book do—but is rather an attempt to understand the complex, even chaotic illocutionary force that calling something “untranslatable” routinely unleashes in vari- ous scholarly and everyday conversations. To the extent that the reader agrees with the notion that effrontery is somehow immanent in the word untranslatable, and that a variety of typical scenarios of affront collude with one another to intensify for the word an arch and casuistic aura, we may then consider whether the concept of untranslatability is—despite itself—still capable of holding water in scholarly work, cultural politics and indeed activism, and whether any modest adjustments might miti- gate its performative excesses thus far. -

The Journal of Specialised Translation Issue 32 – July 2019 Parodic dubbing in Spain: digital manifestations of cultural appropriation, repurposing and subversion Rocío Baños, University College London ABSTRACT This paper sets out to explore the phenomenon of parodic dubbing by examining its origins and situating it in its current context. Parodic dubbing symbolises the union of two loathed but highly influential forms of artistic and cultural appropriation, used innovatively in the current digital era. The aim is also to investigate how parodic dubbing reflects the politics of audiovisual translation in general, and of dubbing in particular, revealing similarities and divergences with official dubbing practices. This is done drawing on examples from two different Spanish parodic dubbings from an iconic scene from Pulp Fiction (Tarantino 1994). Throughout this work, theoretical perspectives and notions through which parodic dubbing can be examined (among others, rewriting, ideological manipulation, cultural and textual poaching, participatory culture or fandubbing) are presented, framing this phenomenon in the current discussion of fan practices and participatory culture, and drawing on theoretical perspectives and notions developed within Translation Studies and Media Studies. The investigation of the relationship between parodic dubbing, translation and subversion has illustrated that this and other forms of cultural appropriation and repurposing challenge our traditional understanding of notions such as originality, authorship and fidelity. In addition, it has revealed how such practices can be used as a site of experimentation and innovation, as well as an ideological tool. Translation Loss in Translation of the Glorious Quran, with Special Reference to Verbal Similarity Batoul Ahmed Omer Translation Loss in Translation of the Glorious Quran, with Special Reference to Verbal Similarity Batoul Ahmed Omer Abstract The process of translation is highly delicate and extremely difficult task to undertake when it deals with the translation of the Quran which, of course, transforms the Quran as the WORD of Allah into Arabic to the speech of a human being in another language. Translations of the Quran into all languages are indispensable to communicate the Divine message to Non-Arabic Muslims as well as Non-Muslims around the world. Nowadays, numerous translations are available for non-Arabic speakers. Many English translations have been widely criticized for their inability to capture the intended meaning of Quranic words and expressions. These translations proved the inimitability of the Qur'anic discourse that employs extensive and complex syntactical and rhetoric features and that linguistically the principle of absolute untranslatability applies to the Quran. Consequently, partial or complete grammatical and semantic losses are encountered in translation due to the lack of some of these features in English. These translation losses is particularly apparent in translation of verbal similarity in the Quranic verses, as an abundant phenomenon in the Quran, in the form of over-, under-, or mistranslation of a source text (ST). This study attempted to investigate these translation losses in the translation of the Holy Quran focusing on verbal similarity as an impressive way of expression and a rhetorical figure widely used in the Quran. San Diego Linguistic Papers 2 (2006) 1-24 LINGUISTIC PRACTICES IN CYPRUS AND THE EMERGENCE OF CYPRIOT STANDARD GREEK* Amalia Arvaniti University of California, San Diego ----------------------------------------------- In Cyprus today systematic changes affecting all levels of linguistic analysis are observed in the use of Standard Greek, giving rise to a distinct linguistic variety which can be called Cypriot Standard Greek. The changes can be attributed to the influence of English and Cypriot Greek (the local linguistic variety), and to the increasing use of the Standard in semi-formal occasions. Equally important is the reluctance to recognize the diglossic situation on the island (in which Standard Greek is the H variety and Cypriot Greek the L), for political and ideological reasons. This in turn means that the attention of the Cypriot speakers is not drawn to the differences between Standard Greek as spoken in Greece and their usage of it; thus the differences become gradually consolidated, while the users remain unaware of them. ----------------------------------------------- 1 Introduction The past two decades have seen a proliferation of scholarly work on the linguistic situation in Cyprus. This body of work is concerned with several topics, such as the speakers’ awareness of the linguistic varieties spoken on the island (e.g., Karyolemou & * This paper is a companion to Arvaniti (this volume b). Although the papers compliment each other, they are written in such a way that each can be read independently of the other; for this reason, some introductory sections (e.g. the historical background) show a degree of overlap. The bulk of the data in this article was gathered in Cyprus from 1996 to 2001, with additional data collected since then using a variety of web resources.
