MESSENGER/SEPTEMBER 1985 3 The Caring Church Must Be Prepared C.S. Greene Personal Ministries Director, Canadian Union Conference

N FRIDAY, MAY 31, 1985, A DEVASTATING TOR- ONADO tore through Central Ontario and left in its wake twelve dead, between 400 to 500 injured, hundreds of homes destroyed, thousands homeless and more than twenty thousand people without electricity. The tornado-twister lasted less than fifteen minutes but left in its path destruction that has run into more than one hundred million dollars in damage. Buildings of all sizes were torn apart and vehicles and roofs were lifted into the air and scattered in every direction. Some described the area by saying, "it looks like a war zone". Factories and houses were left like match boxes crushed by a mighty giant. The army, the Red Cross and Community Services groups, including Seventh-day Adventists, have been assisting the victims. The Orillia S.D.A. Community Services leader dispatched her entire stock of disaster boxes, as well as cases of food. These supplies arrived less than two hours after the tragedy. The Ontario Conference, the Canadian Union and Adventist Development Relief Agency donated $11,500 to assist in this disaster. Elder R. Bacchus, Personal Minis- tries of the Ontario Conference, says "at a community services workshop at New Frenda members contributed personally and from their Federation units a total of one thousand dollars." An appeal was made at the Graduation exercises at Kingsway College on Sunday, June 2, and President Ralph Janes reports that nearly five thousand dollars were donated. As we near the close of time disasters will spring up on every side. Nothing will be safe. A caring church must always be prepared to assist those who have fallen victims to disaster and upheavals.

Children Dedicated at Oliver/Osoyoos Now in its 10th year of operation the Kamloops Seventh-day Adventist Church School can look back with pride at the positive influence it has had on the lives of the youngsters that have attended. The school has remained small, oper- ating continually with a family atmosphere in its one classroom. It is equipped with a good library and operates out of the church facility. It is centrally located in the city, but believing that the Lord would bless, the church purchased a piece of property for future development of a church school facility. This property now owned remains idle and a subject of prayer in these hard economic times. The school and the church board have voted confidently to go forward and hire a teacher for the school year 1985-86. They are now accepting applications for students. 8 MESSENGER/SEPTEMBER 1985 in the Alberta and Manitoba-Saskatchewan Conferences

On Sabbath afternoon, July 27, at Foothills Camp Meeting in Alberta a beautiful ordination service took place. Pastor Warren Kay was ordained to the gospel ministry. Elder Bill Bornstein, Director of the Ministerial Department in the Canadian Union Conference, presented the sermon; Elder George Vandeman, Speaker for It Is Written telecast, had the ordination prayer; Elder Herb Larsen, President of Alberta Conference, presented Warren with the ordination charge; Elder Al Reimche, Director of the Ministerial Department for the Alberta Conference, sang "So Send I You"; and Elder Ed Teranski, Stewardship Department director, officially welcomed Warren and Cheryl into the ministry. All of the ministers in the Alberta Conference took part in the ordination prayer with Elder Elder Warren Kay with his wife, Cheryl. George Vandeman. Warren is present pastor of the Grande Prairie congregation. When asked about his goal in the ministry, Warren quotes a text found in John 20:23, "I in them and they in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved me, as thou hast loved me."

During the camp meeting weekends held in the Manitoba-Saskatchewan Conference, three young men with their dedicated partners by their side accepted ordination to the Gospel Ministry. Kristopher Zygowiec, pastor of the Battlefords- St. Walburg district, came to this conference in Pictured left to right: Pastor and Mrs. K. Zygowiec, Elder D. Devnich. 1983. During his two years of ministry, he re- organized this district into two strong church units. His faithful work in the community gave him the opportunity to establish good contacts with community leaders and this strengthened the work of the church. Alan Atkinson has pastored the Dauphin district for the last 3 years. He has presently moved to Winnipeg, where he will give pastoral leader- ship to the Transcona-Morden-River Hills churches. Alan is looking forward to his new post of labor. Vaudre Jacques has served in the Manitoba- Saskatchewan Conference since 1979. During this time, he has pastored in the Winnipeg and Swan River districts. Vaudre enjoys the ministry and emphasizes the work of giving Bible studies in his ministry.

Significant Gains for Toronto East Membership

A recently concluded evangelistic crusade resulted in the addition, through baptism, of 56 persons to the Toronto East Church. The five-week series began on March 23 and came to a grand conclusion on April 27, 1985 with a special candlelight service. Crusade Evangelist Earl Cameron, came to the Toronto East Church with an outstanding track record for soul-winning. Since the commencement of the 'Thousand Days of Reaping' program, Pastor Cameron has baptized 430 persons and became known as leading evangelist in the Central Jamaica Conference where he served. Cameron, who assumed pastor responsibilities at this church on September 1, 1984, is optimistic about future soul-winning prospects in Canada after this first attempt. He was assisted at the meetings by Pastor Frank Lazarus who is his associate and by Stanley McFarlane. Most of the special music at the meetings was rendered by a group known as "Destiny Five." The tremendous support of the church membership was an important factor in the success of the crusade. We give God the Evangelist Earl P. Cameron, 2nd row right, with some of the 56 new glory for this great soul-winning victory. members baptized.
