VS. Naipauñ "The Return of Eva Perón " and the Loss of "True Wonder TRACY WARE ... the experience of wonder continually reminds us that our grasp of the world is incomplete. STEPHEN GREENBLATT, Marvelous Possessions IN "CONRAD'S DARKNESS," the concluding essay in The Return of Eva Perón, V. S. Naipaul laments the decay of Joseph Conrad's aesthetic ideals: The novelist, like the painter, no longer recognizes his interpretive function; he seeks to go beyond it; and his audience diminishes. And so the world we inhabit, which is always new, goes by unexamined, made ordinary by the camera, unmeditated on; and there is no one to awaken the sense of true wonder. (245) As a "fair definition of the novelist's purpose, in all ages" (245), this passage seems at least partially at odds with Naipaul's own increasingly bleak fiction and with his achievement in this vol• ume. Here, in penetrating and contentious analyses of Third World corruption, he fulfills his own demands for examination, meditation, and interpretation, if not for wonder. Though he subordinates these essays to the thematically similar novels he wrote later ( Guerrillas and A Bend in the River), though he claims no "further unity" than comes from "intensity" and an "obses• sional nature" ("Author's Note"), the book is ideologically con• sistent and intricately designed: each essay offers "a vision of the world's half-made societies as places which continuously made and unmade themselves" (233), to borrow Naipaul's account of Nostromo; each of the first three essays has an apt citation from ARIEL: A Review of International English Literature, 24:2, April 1993 102 TRACY WARE Conrad, whom the last essay considers at length. -

Middle Atlantic Review of Latin American Studies, 2020 Vol. 4, No. 2, 174-193 Beyond Créolité and Coolitude, the Indian on the Plantation: Recreolization in the Transoceanic Frame Ananya Jahanara Kabir Kings College London [email protected] This essay explores the ways in which Caribbean artists of Indian heritage memorialize the transformation of Caribbean history, demography, and lifeways through the arrival of their ancestors, and their transformation, in turn, by this new space. Identifying for this purpose an iconic figure that I term “the Indian on the Plantation,” I demonstrate how the influential theories of Caribbean identity-formation that serve as useful starting points for explicating the play of memory and identity that shapes Indo-Caribbean artistic praxis—coolitude (as coined by Mauritian author Khal Torabully) and créolité (as most influentially articulated by the Martinican trio of Jean Barnabé, Patrick Chamoiseau, and Raphaël Confiant)—are nevertheless constrained by certain discursive limitations. Unpacking these limitations, I offer instead evidence from curatorial and quotidian realms in Guadeloupe as a lens through which to assess an emergent artistic practice that cuts across Francophone and Anglophone constituencies to occupy the Caribbean Plantation while privileging signifiers of an Indic heritage. Reading these attempts as examples of decreolization that actually suggest an ongoing and unpredictable recreolization of culture, I situate this apparent paradox within a transoceanic heuristic frame that brings -

Th e 2-week conference, convened by R. D. Laing and leading fi gures in the anti-psychiatry movement, featured contributions from Beat Generation writers William Burroughs and Allen Ginsberg; Emmett Grogan, founder of the San Francisco anarchist movement Th e Diggers; and the Frankfurt School neo-Marxist, Herbert Marcuse (Cooper 1968: 9). Th e conference practised the countercultural values that it preached, spontaneously transforming the Roundhouse and Camden ’ s pubs and bars into informal collegiums, the founding event of the anti-university of London (Ibid., 11). Black Power, a movement that had emerged at the cutting edge of the American Civil Rights struggle the year before, had several representatives at the conference. Th e headline black radical and the most controversial speaker by far was Howe ’ s fellow Trinidadian and childhood friend, Stokely Carmichael, now the harbinger of the Black Power revolution. Th e British press responded to his visit by branding him ‘ an evil campaigner of hate ’ and ‘ the most eff ective preacher of racial hatred at large today ’ (Humphry and Tindall 1977: 63). -

157 The Black Power Movement in Trinidad and Tobago Jerome Teelucksingh ABSTRACT The article examines the impact of Black Power in Trinidad and Tobago during the 1960s and 1970s. Black Power appealed to a wide cross-section of the public, including academics, trade unionists, and the underprivileged. There is emphasis on the global and regional linkages, including the Sir George Williams Affair in Canada and the Black Power Movement in the United States. Furthermore, Black Power participants in Trinidad and Tobago maintained contacts with their counterparts in other Caribbean countries. The article also provides evidence that the Black Power Movement highlighted the economic problems, racism, and social crisis facing Trinidad and Tobago. This included removal of restrictions from certain jobs and reduction of the racial tension between Afro-Trinidadians and Indo-Trinidadians. Mention is made of individuals and groups who provided leadership, guidance, and ideological input within the movement. Origins of Black Power Black Power in Trinidad and Tobago, during the 1960s and 1970s, was strongly influenced by the ideology of Pan-Africanism, which emerged during the nineteenth century and continued into the early twentieth century when Marcus Garvey, a Jamaican based in the United Black Diaspora Review 4(1) Winter 2014 158 States, promoted race consciousness during the 1920s and 1930s.1 Race consciousness, African identity, and pride were important components of Pan-Africanism and Garveyism, which comprised the foundation of Black Power. The emergence of Black Power during the 1960s signified a struggle to reclaim authority, power, identity, and respect. Black Power in the United States was a response to many years of racism faced by African Americans and that turbulent era was marked by discontent with the “establishment” and rejection of conventional politics. -

Foreword Much has been written recently about the national problem of low levels of civic and political participation. In California, one of the most worrisome aspects of that problem is low voter turnout among the state’s Asian, black, and Latino populations. After studying the data carefully, Professors Citrin and Highton find that a relatively small set of background factors—age, educational attainment, income, and residential stability—account for most of the turnout differences observed across California’s white, black, and Latino populations. They also estimate that if blacks and Latinos had the same socioeconomic profile as whites, their voting rates would be very similar. -

Black Panther Party: 1966-1982 Abstract The Black Panther party was founded in Oakland, California, in 1966. From its beginnings as a local, community organization with a handful of members, it expanded into a national and international party. By 1980, however, the Black Panther party was once again mainly an Oakland-based organization, with no more than fifty active members. In 1982, the party came to an official end. Despite itselativ r ely short history, its modest membership, and its general eschewing of electoral politics, the Black Panther party was arguably the best known and most controversial of the black militant political organizations of the 1960s, with a legacy that continues to this day. -

Meanwhile, the generation of black and white social workers and activists who flocked to Notting Hill after the riots have largely been left out of the history of the British left. This article treats Notting Hill after 1958 as an important locale of new progressive thinking and action. It seeks to consider the political work that the idea of “community” did in Notting Hill, allowing us consider how the politics of anti-racism relates in complex ways to the reformulation of progressive politics in postwar Britain. It reveals how black activists came to reappropriate the language of “community” to critique the ameliorative, welfarist approach to anti-racism. It also unearths the forgotten eclectic beginnings of Britain's New Left. By excavating the history of community work and New Left activism “from below,” this article traces the ways in which a motley group of Methodist ministers, Christian Workers, students, social workers, and community leaders tested the limits of liberal paternalism and the “universalism” of the postwar social democratic state. -

The vision for the Museum, however, emerged over a decade earlier within contexts of decolonial cultural nationalist movements in the circum-Caribbean and African diasporic world at large. Exploring particular histories and contemporary functioning of this museum reveals insights into cultural politics of Guyana’s postcolonial nationalist formations, as well as into ways in which museums navigate their often- incongruous political and cultural roles in societies. Museum Director, Jenny Daly, has since the MAH’s inception been the main force behind this institution. Understanding this Museum’s past and current relationships to cultural-nationalist struggles is instruc- tive for historians of Caribbean politics, Africanist scholars, and museologists more generally. Noting how Daly describes her own professional and personal growth realized through relationships forged with artists, their works, and their various communities of engagement can be illuminating. Daly recalls how art served as an effective medium through which she began to engage meaningfully with aspects of her own ancestral heritages, recognizing a profound correspondence between her involvement with the arts and with local Guyanese iterations of African-derived religiosity.
