De Palma, who has often been accused of emphasizing style over content, here has a strong and substantial script to work with, and his flashy direction meshes perfectly with the film’s flamboyantly operatic design. The script may not be true to history, but it’s true to human emotion and very moving, personalizing the battle between good and evil by concentrating on the impact that violence and corruption has on families.

The South African black majority still has a substantial number of rural inhabitants who lead largely impoverished lives. It is among these people, however, that cultural traditions survive most strongly; as blacks have become increasingly urbanised and Westernised, aspects of traditional culture have declined. Urban blacks usually speak English or Afrikaans in addition to their native tongue. There are smaller but still significant groups of speakers of Khoisan languages who are not included in the eleven official languages, but are one of the eight other officially recognised languages. There are small groups of speakers of endangered languages, most of which are from the Khoi-San family, that receive no official status; however, some groups within South Africa are attempting to promote their use and revival. Members of middle class, who are predominantly white but whose ranks include growing numbers of black, coloured and Indian people, have lifestyles similar in many respects to that of people found in Western Europe, North America and Australasia. Members of the middle class often study and work abroad for greater exposure to the markets of the world. Indian South Africans preserve their cultural heritage, languages and religious beliefs, being either Christian, Hindu or Muslim and speaking English, with Indian languages like Hindi, Telugu, Tamil or Gujarati being spoken less frequently as second languages.     ABSTRACT TAIWANESE IDENTITY AND TRANSNATIONAL FAMILIES IN THE CINEMA OF ANG LEE Ting-Ting Chan, Ph.D. Department of English Northern Illinois University, 2017 Scott Balcerzak, Director This dissertation argues that acclaimed filmmaker Ang Lee should be regarded as a Taiwanese transnational filmmaker. Thus, to best understand his work, a Taiwanese sociopolitical context should be employed to consider his complicated national identity as it is reflected in his films across genres and cultures. Previous Ang Lee studies see him merely as a transnational Taiwanese-American or diasporic Chinese filmmaker and situate his works into a broader spectrum of either Asian-American culture or Chinese national cinema. In contrast, this dissertation argues his films are best understood through a direct reference to Taiwan’s history, politics, and society. The chapters examine eight of Lee’s films that best explain his Taiwanese national identity through different cultural considerations: Pushing Hands (1992) and Eat Drink Man Woman (1994) are about maternity; The Wedding Banquet (1993) and Brokeback Mountain (2005) consider homosexuality; The Ice Storm (1997) and Taking Woodstock (2009) represent a collective Taiwanese view of America; and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000) and Lust, Caution (2007) reflect and challenge traditions of Taiwan Cinema. The eight films share three central leitmotifs: family, a sympathetic view of cultural outsiders, and a sympathy for the losing side. Through portraying various domestic relations, Lee presents archetypal families based in filial piety, yet at the same time also gives possible challenges represented by a modern era of equal rights, liberalism, and individualism – which confront traditional Taiwanese-Chinese family views.

    REPRESSION, SILENCE, AND CINEMATIC LANGUAGE: EASTERN SENSIBILITY IN VISUALIZING BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN Huai Bao Dhawa Abstract: From Brokeback Mountain to Life of Pi, the Taiwan-born film director, Ang Lee, has won two Oscars for the Best Director. Both films are set in cultural contexts where Lee did not grow up, and yet both have drawn global audiences and received unanimous praise from critics. This article examines Ang Lee’s cinematic technique communicated with his Eastern sensibilities in Brokeback Mountain. In applying his cinematic language, he not only shows loyalty to the mood and content of the original short story, but also re-creates much visual detail. His visual additions serve to redeem what in writing is not replicable in film, such as psychological description, and to enrich the story to fill the range of a full-length feature film. So much has been written about Ang Lee’s Brokeback Mountain. The film has received unanimous acclamation from global audiences, film critics and LGBT communities. It was also one of the biggest winners at the 78th Academy Awards, crowning Lee the Best Director. It has been regarded as an “issue film that invites nothing but pure escapism” (Herring, 2007, 94), as well as “a love story about two guys who happen to be gay” (McBride, 2007, 96). The financial success of the film is equally remarkable. Grundmann has noted, “Made and marketed for $14 million (not a single one of which, as Variety has noted, went to TV advertising), its initial badge was strictly art house. But when the opening weekend yielded a conspicuous eighth best per-screen average in history, even seasoned industry analysts were taken by surprise ” (2006, 50-52).

George Clooney won the best supporting actor award for ‘Syriana’, but was also nominated as a director for ‘Good Night and Good Luck’. He joked about why he likes directing, “You can get old and grey and they still let you do the job!” British films had limited success, but a seven-months pregnant Rachel Weisz collected the best supporting actress award, and British-made ‘Six Shooter’ won in the best short film category.

() Encyclopedia Taiwanese American 台美族百科全書 Outstanding Taiwanese Americans Preface For Outstanding Taiwanese American Starting in 1950, Taiwanese for a variety of different reasons traveled across the sea to start a new life in America. In the beginning, the majority of Taiwanese immigrants were college graduates. Because job opportunities in Taiwan were lacking, and because they wanted to pursue an advanced education at a time when Taiwan did not have many graduate schools, these students chose to go abroad. At the time, a lot of American science and engineering graduate programs were offering scholarships to international students, and as a result, many students applied to come to the United States in order to advance their academic careers. Back then, there was a shortage of medical personnel in America, and thus foreign doctors, nurses, and other medical professionals were being recruited. At the same time, Taiwan’s political and economic environment was looking rather bleak. These conditions encouraged many native Taiwanese medical professionals to leave for the United States. These students and medical professionals slowly began to put down roots, starting new lives and careers in this new country. Soon becoming American citizens, these two groups became the foundation of the current Taiwanese American community. In 1980, there was decreased political support for Taiwan within the international community, but the Taiwanese economy was beginning to take off. Because of this, many Taiwanese had the means to come to the States as family-based immigrants or business investors. These people constituted the third wave of Taiwanese immigrants to the United States.
