Email: [email protected] Phone: (c) 323.898.7388 Course Description and Overview “The duty of comedy is to correct men by amusing them.” — Molière In this experiential writing and performance workshop course, we will explore and develop our comedic voices via the creation of comedic sketches, through the entire process — from idea generation, to writing, rewriting, rehearsal, and finally production and performance of a fully realized sketch comedy show, with an emphasis on comedic collaboration and ensemble building. Learning Objectives Throughout this course, we will work to develop our comedic voices through the medium of sketch — comedic explorations of concepts, characters and situations. We will learn sketch writing structure through the study of prominent existing sketches, and techniques for sketch performance and character creation. Students are expected to generate a high volume of comedic concepts and written material to serve their own creative exploration, and their own work ethic and writing practice. Students are also expected to serve the needs of the group, and work toward building a true comedy ensemble. Although we will be working toward a final workshop presentation, this course is focused on process over product — you are not expected to be funny 100% of the time, or even 10% of the time. You are expected to be brave, be open-minded, and stretch out of your comfort zone to explore and strengthen your own unique comedic voice.

MEDIA CONTACT Teni Melidonian [email protected] Toni Thompson [email protected] January 24, 2012 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 84th ACADEMY AWARDS® NOMINATIONS ANNOUNCED BEVERLY HILLS, CA — Nominations for the 84th Academy Awards were announced today (Tuesday, January 24) by Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Tom Sherak and 2010 Oscar® nominee Jennifer Lawrence. Sherak and Lawrence, who was nominated for an Academy Award® for her lead performance in “Winter’s Bone,” announced the nominees in 10 of the 24 Award categories at a 5:38 a.m. PT live news conference attended by more than 400 international media representatives. Lists of nominations in all categories were then distributed to the media in attendance and online via the official Academy Awards website, www.oscar.com. Academy members from each of the branches vote to determine the nominees in their respective categories – actors nominate actors, film editors nominate film editors, etc. In the Animated Feature Film and Foreign Language Film categories, nominations are selected by vote of multi-branch screening committees. All voting members are eligible to select the Best Picture nominees. Nominations ballots were mailed to the 5,783 voting members in late December and were returned directly to PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), the international accounting firm, for tabulation. Official screenings of all motion pictures with one or more nominations will begin for members this weekend at the Academy's Samuel Goldwyn Theater. Screenings also will be held at the Academy's Linwood Dunn Theater in Hollywood and in London, New York and the San Francisco Bay Area. All active and life members of the Academy are eligible to select the winners in all categories, although in five of them – Animated Short Film, Live Action Short Film, Documentary Feature, Documentary Short Subject and Foreign Language Film – members can vote only if they have seen all of the nominated films in those categories.

They will force you to question some of your beliefs, and will help your thought patterns take on new dimensions. Happy viewing! 1. THE UNTOUCHABLES “The Power of Character” Kevin Kostner, Sean Connery, Robert de Niro Kevin Costner became a star as the legendary “GMan” Eliot Ness in THE UNTOUCHABLES, a slambang gangster saga with bravura direction by Brian De Palma, a witty David Mamet script and superb acting, including Robert De Niro as Al Capone and Sean Connery’s Oscarwinning turn as a wily veteran cop. It’s a terrifically entertaining and exciting movie. The story is almost totally fictionalized (Ness never killed Frank Nitti and had nothing to do with Capone’s incometax rap), but this becomes completely irrelevant in light of the beautifully crafted film’s accomplishments. De Palma, who has often been accused of emphasizing style over content, here has a strong and substantial script to work with, and his flashy direction meshes perfectly with the film’s flamboyantly operatic design. The script may not be true to history, but it’s true to human emotion and very moving, personalizing the battle between good and evil by concentrating on the impact that violence and corruption has on families.

Culture of South Africa From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation, search Zulus in Natal Castle of Good Hope, the oldest colonial building in South Africa The culture of South Africa is known for its ethnic and cultural diversity. The South African black majority still has a substantial number of rural inhabitants who lead largely impoverished lives. It is among these people, however, that cultural traditions survive most strongly; as blacks have become increasingly urbanised and Westernised, aspects of traditional culture have declined. Urban blacks usually speak English or Afrikaans in addition to their native tongue. There are smaller but still significant groups of speakers of Khoisan languages who are not included in the eleven official languages, but are one of the eight other officially recognised languages. There are small groups of speakers of endangered languages, most of which are from the Khoi-San family, that receive no official status; however, some groups within South Africa are attempting to promote their use and revival. Members of middle class, who are predominantly white but whose ranks include growing numbers of black, coloured and Indian people, have lifestyles similar in many respects to that of people found in Western Europe, North America and Australasia. Members of the middle class often study and work abroad for greater exposure to the markets of the world. Indian South Africans preserve their cultural heritage, languages and religious beliefs, being either Christian, Hindu or Muslim and speaking English, with Indian languages like Hindi, Telugu, Tamil or Gujarati being spoken less frequently as second languages. The first Indians arrived on the Truro ship as indentured labourers in Natal to work the Sugar Cane Fields, while the rest arrived as traders.
