RESUMO A COMPOSIÇÃO DE TELEOSTEI E ELASMOBRANCHII NO HOLOCENO BRASILEIRO, BAÍA BABITONGA/SC: SUPORTE PARA REFERÊNCIAS ECOLÓGICAS AUTOR: Thiago Fossile ORIENTADOR: Sérgio Dias da Silva CO-ORIENTADOR: André Carlo Colonese A pesca artesanal contribui para a seguridade alimentar e a erradicação da pobreza ao proporcionar alimentos, renda e emprego para milhões de pessoas. No entanto, entre vários problemas, o setor sofre com a diminuição dos recursos biológicos e a degradação dos habitats aquáticos, impactando os pescadores costeiros e de pequena escala que possuem dependência dos ecossistemas locais e regionais de onde retiram seu meio de subsistência. A partir do conceito de Síndrome de Mudanças de Linha de Base (Shifting Baselines Syndrome), verifica-se a ausência de pontos referenciais adequados para análise de mudanças na composição ictiológica, como subsídios para adequada gestão da pesca. Desta forma, são necessários estudos para levantamento de dados históricos e arqueológicos com o objetivo de identificar a alteração e a evolução espaço-temporal das espécies (ex.: sobrepesca). Assim, o nosso estudo buscou descrever a diversidade da ictiofauna na pré-história brasileira e contribuir para o desenvolvimento de referências ecológicas, a partir da identificação e mensuração de restos faunísticos em sítios arqueológicos na Baía Babitonga, para fins de comparação com informações a respeito da pesca no litoral brasileiro. However, among some problems, the sector suffers from declining biological resources and degraded aquatic habitats, impacting coastal and small-scale fishers who depend on local and regional ecosystems to derive their subsistence. Based on the concept of Shifting Baselines Syndrome, there are no adequate reference points for analysis of changes in fish composition, as subsidies for adequate management of fishery. Therefore, it is necessary to study historical and archaeological data with the objective of identifying change and spatial-temporal evolution of the species (e.g. overfishing). This study aimed to describe the ichthyofauna diversity in Brazilian pre-Columbian and to contribute to the development of ecological references, from the identification and measurement of faunistic remains in archaeological sites in Babitonga Bay for the purpose of comparison with information about the fisheries in the Brazilian coast. Na América Latina, a pesca artesanal é praticada em uma ampla gama de ecossistemas e integra conhecimento tradicional resultante de um longo e complexo processo de ocupação costeira. Os pescadores costeiros e de pequena escala possuem dependência destes ecossistemas locais e regionais onde desenvolvem seus meios de subsistência (SALAS et al., 2011). Wf.> hilve recorded the employment of mollusks, crustaceans, echinoderms, fishes, reptiles, and cetace<lns, and noted a high predominance of fishes over other aquatic animals. Asthma, bronchitis, stroke, and wounds arc the most usual illnesses treated by animal-based medicines. These results corroborate Marques' zoothcrapeutic universality hypothesis. According to him, all human cultures that prcscnt a developed medical system do use animals as medicines. Further studies are requested in order to estimate the existence of bioactive compounds of ph<lrmacological value in these bioresources. Although artisanal fisheries play a key role for people’s livelihoods and food security, these fisheries are often overlooked or undervalued in fisheries’ policy and management. Next to the target species, fisheries also put pressure on other species that are caught in fishery operations. This so-called bycatch is an important driver of population declines in several species of elasmobranchs (sharks, rays, skates and sawfish), marine mammals, seabirds and turtles. There is an increasing interest in the local ecological knowledge of fishers about marine ecosystems. This can be associated with recent attempts of fisheries management to develop more sustainable approaches while also including a local ‘voice’. There is a limited amount of studies on the use of local ecological knowledge in fisheries in Suriname. Hence, this case study, which was part of the author’s internship at the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Guianas, explored what local ecological knowledge fishers from the artisanal gillnet fishery in Suriname hold and its (potential) role in fisheries management and conservation efforts by answering the following research question: How can fishers’ knowledge be incorporated in fishery management and marine conservation efforts? All respondents are experiencing a decline in the volume in catches of most fish species and they attribute this to increased fishing effort (both artisanal and industrial).

Sales1,3 and Juliana Araripe1 Coastal and marine environments are characterized by a lack of evident physical barriers or geographic isolation, and it may be difficult to understand how divergence can arise and be sustained in marine environments. The identification of ‘soft’ barriers is a crucial step towards the understanding of gene flow in marine environments. The marine catfishes of the family Ariidae are a demersal group with restricted migratory behavior, no pelagic larval stages, and mechanisms of larval retention, representing a potentially useful model for the understanding of historical processes of allopatric speciation in the marine environment. In the present study, two lineages of the Coco sea catfish, Bagre bagre, were recognized from their complete segregation at both mitochondrial and morphological levels. One lineage is distributed between Venezuela and the northern coast of Brazil, including the semiarid northeast coast, while the second lineage is found on the eastern coast of Brazil, including the humid northeast coast. Based on distribution area, habitats preference, and genetic variability, inferences are made in relation to biogeography and demography of lineages in Atlantic coast of South America. OXENFORD Centre for Resource Management and Environmental Studies (CERMES) Faculty of Science and Technology, The University of the West Indies Cave Hill Campus, Barbados 2019 ABSTRACT This study has quantified and described, for the first time, the finfish bycatch discards and fisher practices in the small-scale inshore artisanal fishery using the Chinese seine gear type operating in the Demerara estuary, Guyana. The study was conducted between July and August, 2016, onboard a typical artisanal Chinese seine vessel during every fishing trip taken over this period. A total of 16 day trips were made and 83 seine hauls completed, representing more than 66 hours of soak time. For every haul, the wet weights of the unsorted catch, the retained catch, the finfish discards and other discards were recorded, along with the seine net soak-time to determine catch rates and the proportion of the catch that is discarded. Finfish discards from each seine haul were sub– sampled to determine the taxonomic composition and individual size (length and weight) frequency distributions. A total of 2,012 individual finfish were examined and revealed high taxonomic diversity, comprising 6 orders, 17 families, 29 genera and 32 species. Of these, a total of 848 individuals (42% of the total sub–sample) belonged to the order Perciformes across 8 families, 13 genera and 13 species. The order Clupeiformes was the second most frequently occurring group, comprising 739 individuals (37%) across 2 families, 5 genera and 5 species.

French Guiana’s coastal shelf is characterised by warm waters with high turbidity and low salinity caused by the large river discharges from the Amazon and nearby estuaries. The high productivity of these areas supports fisheries and aquaculture activities. However, the structure and dynamics of coastal fish populations in French Guiana have seldom been studied. The aim of this study was to understand the effect of environmental conditions, as well as the influence of the coast and nearby estuaries on the spatio-seasonal variability of demersal fish communities living in shallow coastal waters (less than 20m depth). Data were collected from two fishing campaigns using a multi-filament drifting net during the rainy and dry season at 55 sampling stations along the coast. Results showed a high spatial patchiness and no clear seasonal pattern.
