CLUBROOM OLYMPIC FC FC SPONSOR AFKOS INDUSTRIES Boi stars in Floreat win Report by Kelechi Osunwa FAFC V BFC Floreat Athena put up clinical 3-0 win away at Cockburn City to reclaim second place in the National Premier League WA. Floreat started the quicker and took the lead when Jonathan Stynes calmly collected a cross into his path and stroked home. Cockburn nearly equalised minutes later when Jesse Lazzaro and Hasani Sinclair combined for Sinclair to round keeper Jason Saldaris, but the striker drifted wide and could only dink his shot over bar. Floreat ramped up the pressure and nearly doubled the lead when Ludovic Boi combined with Stynes to find Dean Evans free in the box but the midfielder could only volley over the bar. Just as Cockburn were starting to make headway, Boi doubled the lead. The winger swivelled and reacted quickest following a poor clearance in the Cockburn penalty area and fired home. Cockburn made two changes at the interval and had two quick chances to score but Ryan Pratt and Devon Gibson both powered their efforts over the bar. Cockburn pushed for a goal but Floreat were able to keep them at arm’s length with Jesse Fuller and Dennis Galan marshalling the midfield and defence esolutely.r With the match petering to a close substitute George Festa rounded up the scoring with a curling effort from outside the penalty area to move Floreat up to second place. Star player: Ludovic Boi (Floreat Athena) Cockburn City 0 Floreat Athena 3 (Stynes 7min, Boi 38, Festa 78) HEAD COACH REPORT GARRETT McDULING Welcome to all the players, supporters and officials of both Floreat Athena and Balcatta FC to E&D Litis Stadium. Over the past few weeks our focus has been working hard at the back ensuring we reduce the number of goals we are conceding. We went into the Cockburn game still missing a few players in Madaschi, Ambrogio and Arnold however two defenders were back in Saldaris and Malton. The lads did execute the game plan to perfection and got the reward for hard work at training with a clean sheet which was much needed after conceding four to Bayswater and three to Inglewood the previous week. The 3-0 win against Cockburn last weekend also ensured we did not drop from second to sixth in the league as the nature of how tight it is at the pointy end of the table. Goals were scored in the match by Jon Stynes, Ludo Boi and George Festa who made his first League appearance for Athena and scored his first league goal on debut. That does not happen often especially to a defender but credit to Festa who has had a terrific season so far captaining the 20’s and earning valuable first team experience. Balcatta are also having a terrific season and this is another “classic six pointer” as Balcatta are only two points behind Athena which is credit to Goran and his team for their efforts to date. I think this season the league has proven to be quite even and no games are easy with the bottom 4 clubs (at the moment) Rockingham and ECU taking points from league leaders Perth SC and Stirling and Armadale taking points from second place Athena. The top four places for finals football at the end of the season also looks to be a 7 horse race so the final 7 league rounds will be well worth watching. Previously when we played Balcatta at their home ground the match finished 2-0 to Athena. The first half was reasonably balanced with Balcatta trying to get in behind us through long diagonal balls and by creating an overload in wide areas, whilst our chances came through the middle third of the pitch. After a goalless first half we came out flying and after Dean Evans delivered a deep free kick, it was once again Chris Saldaris who volleyed home from 6 yards after just 46 minutes. Both teams continued to go head to head and with just a few minutes before the final whistle we managed to put the game to bed when Nick Ambrogio fired home to ensure all 3 points went to Athena. We have had a tough draw to start the second round playing Glory, Bayswater, Inglewood and Cockburn with mixed results winning two and losing two. We now have Balcatta and Bayswater in the cup final in the next fortnight and then a mid-week clash against Adelaide Olympic. Credit to the players as the training has been intense as has the fixtures. As this is the last match report prior to our Cup final and FFA cup round of 32 matches, I would like to thank the club and players for everything they have done to get us there. It has been a massive effort not by one or two players or a head coach but by the collective. The entire playing group within the senior squad, my assistant Tim Cash and all our support staff Dr Emma Black, Ethan Burke, Jesse Deas and David Kist, Jimmy Campbell, Fred Vanin along with Con, Vas, Evan all the others who help out at the club thank you and we hope to bring hope our second trophy of the year and fly the Athena flag high when we are in South Australia representing WA in the FFA cup. I would like to thank the Club, the community and supporters for being part of this terrific journey and I would like to invite Goran to share a bite to eat and drink with all the Balcatta players and staff after the game in the Clubhouse.
