  • Backtrack Blues Band "One Sheet"
On its fifth CD, “Way Back Home,” the first class band has recorded one of its strongest traditional blues records to date. Led by the double barrel attack of harmonica ace and lead vocalist, Sonny Charles, and the biting Texas blues guitar of Kid Royal, the Backtrack Blues Band is now poised to carry its musical message to a larger audience. —Art Tipaldi, Editor, Blues Music Magazine, 2016 Backtrack isn’t afraid to play dirty and lowdown…. This blues is definitely worth searching for! —Alex Henderson, CD Universe On its new release, “Way Back Home,” the Backtrack Blues Band has delivered an exciting harp and guitar-infused album that really hits the mark! The group has been one of Florida’s leading original blues acts for decades, and those years of performing have paid big dividends on this record. The solid grooves, stellar guitar, electrifying harmonica, and vocals make this CD one of the best blues releases of 2016. Reminiscent of the sounds of Paul Butterfield and the early Fabulous Thunderbirds, the songs on this record are true electric blues with lots of soul and energy. Backtrack has won three consecutive Tampa Bay Music Awards for “Best Blues Band” and has performed at festivals and concerts around the world with blues music legends like Stevie Ray Vaughan, B.B. King, Buddy Guy, Robert Cray, Gregg Allman, John Lee Hooker, Johnny Winter, and others. “Way Back Home” marks the band’s fifth album, and the critics have proclaimed it the band’s best work. • Guitar Mikey Timeline
GUITAR MIKEY TIMELINE 1969 At the age of 5 receives a stack of 45 rpm records. By the age of 6 he finds himself recording himself singing along the records on his dad’s cassette recorder. Songs included “Kansas City” by Trini Lopez. 1976 First Television Appearances At Age 11 Mike McMillan AKA Guitar Mikey at age 11 starts The Young Canadian Blues Band. He makes several appearances with the 3 member band on a local cable show performing some 50's rock'n'roll classics as well as Johnny Winter's "Mean Town Blues". At age 11 Mike attends a Muddy Waters concert by himself. His father returns at the end of the show to pick him up. He is nowhere to be found. Eventually as Mike's dad continues to circle the auditorium he finds Mike exiting the stage door where he had been hanging out with the man himself, Muddy Waters. First Working Band Mike had just turned 12 when he joined his first working band "Phoenix". They would play local high school dances. He would continue performing as a guitar player playing in rock bands while all the time really wanting to play blues. 1980 Steel City Blues Band Mike realized that if he was going to play blues, he would have to front a band as the singer. So he began to sing blues imitating his childhood idol Johnny Winter. The familiar growling style would work for the time being. However Mike's singing would eventually grow into something all his own. He started The Steel City Blues Band.

00:00:00 Music Music “Crown Ones” off the album Stepfather by People Under The Stairs 00:00:06 Oliver Wang Host Hello, I’m Oliver Wang. 00:00:08 Morgan Host And I’m Morgan Rhodes. You’re listening to Heat Rocks. Rhodes Every episode we invite a guest to join us to talk about a heat rock. You know, fire, combustibles, albums that bump eternally. Today we will be deep diving together into the cult classic 1971 album by Karen Dalton, In My Own Time. 00:00:24 Music Music “Take Me” off the album In My Own Time by Karen Dalton. Sad, slow music with crooning, raspy, vibrating vocals. Take me to your darkest room Close every window and lock every door [Music fades out as Morgan speaks.] 00:00:46 Morgan Host Turn to your neighbor and say, “I thank God I don’t look like what I’ve been through.” I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard that over the years; and more than an acknowledgement of the virtue of melanin, it is meant to suggest that whatever else a close read of your backstory might reveal, pain doesn’t always show on your face. ‘Cause sometimes it shows up in your voice, as it did with Karen Dalton on her album for Paramount records, In My Own Time. Karen Dalton sounded like what she’d been through. Raspy world- weariness, longing and sadness, even on songs meant to be happy like Holland-Dozier’s “How Sweet It Is.” Karen Dalton did two things for sure on this album: uncovered pain on an album of covers, and spent those covers strumming her pain with her fingers, in blues, in folk, in gospel, and in rock.
