    Leonard Slatkin at 70: The DSO’s music director was born for the podium By Lawrence B. Johnson Some bright young musicians know early on that they want to be a conductor. Leonard Slatkin, who turned 70 Slatkin at 70: on September 1, had a more specific vision. He believed himself born to be a music director. Greatest Hits “First off, it was pretty clear that I would go into conducting once I had the opportunity to actually lead an orchestra,” says Slatkin, music director of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra since 2008 and occupant of the same post with the Orchestre National de Lyon since 2011. “The study process suited my own ethic and, at least for me, I felt relatively comfortable with the technical part of the job.” “But perhaps more important, I knew that I would also be a music director. Mind you, this is a very different job from just getting on the podium and waving your arms. The decision making process and the ability to shape a single ensemble into a cohesive whole, including administration, somehow felt natural to me.” Slatkin arrived at the DSO with two directorships already under his belt – the Saint Louis Symphony (1979-96) and the National Symphony in Washington, D.C. (1996-2008) – and an earful of caution about the economically distressed city and the hard-pressed orchestra to which he was being lured. But it was a challenge that excited him. “Almost everyone warned me about the impending demise of the orchestra,” the conductor says. “A lot of people said that I should not take it.

    A Conversation with Vassar Clements by Frank Goodman (Puremusic.com, 8/2004) Perhaps like many who will enjoy the interview that follows, among my first recollections of Vassar’s playing is the 1972 Nitty Gritty Dirt Band recording Will the Circle Be Unbroken. As long ago as that seems (and is), he’d already been at it for over twenty years! In 1949, although only 14 years old and still in school, he began playing with Bill Monroe, the father of bluegrass. Aside from a few years off early on to check out some other things, Vassar’s been playing music professionally ever since. He’s recognized as the most genre-bending fiddler ever. “The Father of Hillbilly Jazz” is a handle that comes from several CDs he cut at that crossroads, but you can hear jazz and blues in any of the playing he’s done. He grew up listening to big band and Dixieland, and still listens to a lot of it today. Vassar says that many of the tunes he writes or passages he’ll fly into in a solo come from half remembered horn lines deep in his musical memory. Between his beginnings with Bill Monroe and the Circle album, Clements did many years with Jim and Jesse and then years with the late and much loved John Hartford, a lifelong friend who gave him the legendary fiddle he plays today. Circle turned a whole generation of hippies and acoustic music fans on to his music, and the children of that generation are following him today, as his popularity continues to recycle.

Professor Anthony Marinello conducts the ISU Wind Symphony in a performance of the winning work in this year’s Composition Competition for Wind Ensemble, Patrick Lenz’s Pillar of Fire. The Wind Symphony also performs guest composer William Bolcom’s Concerto for Soprano Saxophone with ISU faculty Paul Nolen, and the world premiere of faculty composer Martha Horst’s work Who Has Seen the Wind?     B L U E I N K APRIL 2016 Gator By the Bay Brings Musicians Together in Exciting Pairings Now in its 15th year, Gator By the Bay, May 5-8, 2016, has become a wildly popular San Diego festival tradition known for presenting an eclectic mix of musical styles and a fun- filled atmosphere. Wander among the festival’s seven stages and you can listen to everything from authentic Louisiana Cajun and Zydeco music to Chicago and West Coast Blues, from Latin to Rockabilly and Swing. In recent years, Gator By the Bay has also earned a stand-out reputation for bringing together stellar combinations of musicians in innovative mash-up performances, presenting musical groupings you won’t hear anywhere else. This year is no exception. On Saturday, May 7, San Diego’s own multiple gold guitarist Johnny Vernazza will share the Mardi Gras Stage with blues greats Roy Rogers and John Németh. Often lauded as the “Master of the Slide Guitar”, Roy Rogers’ distinctive style is instantly recognizable. He’s shared duets with such greats as John Lee Hooker and Allen Toussaint, and teamed up with the likes of Norton Buffalo and Ray Manzarek. Harmonica virtuoso, vocalist and songwriter John Németh has multiple Blues Music Awards nominations to his name, and his album, ‘Memphis Grease’, won Best Soul Blues Album at the 2015 Blues Music Awards. He has been nominated for the Blues Music Awards 2016 B.B. King Entertainer of the Year Award, to be given out on May 5. Other notable combined artists’ performances include Sugaray Rayford, Alabama Mike & the Drop Ins with harmonica master Rick Estrin and harmonica and guitar whiz-kid Jon Atkinson on Friday evening, May 6, and Jon Atkinson with Rick Estrin and Fabulous Thunderbird alumna Kim Wilson on Saturday, May 7.
