In May, Rita and Mark Hamburgh were honored for their service by their synagogue, the Hebrew Tabernacle Congregation, at its 11th anniversary dinner. In addition to being a vice president, Rita has run a weekly exercise class for the last 30 years or so, donating all proceeds to the temple. Mark has been on the Board of Trustees for 37 years, 14 of them as an officer and five of them as president. In the previous “Folk Process” column, I mentioned an article about Sylvia Elbaz that appeared in a June issue of The Riverdale Press (riverdalepress.com). (Thank you Evy Mayer for forwarding the article to me). The article concerns Sylvia’s career as a local TV chef. Since then, Sylvia has filled me in with more information of particular interest to us folk music people. There is always music! For example, music attuned to themes plays as the credits roll. An example is Toby Fagenson’s “Peppermint Tea” which complemented the program about Chinese herbs. “Nutrition is my mission, but music is my passion,” says Sylvia. For more tasty morsels, you can catch her program on Sunday mornings at 8:30 online via Manhattan Neighborhood Network (mnn.org). It is also accessible on channel 56 TV (TimeWarner cable). Gail LevineFried writes about a memorable twoweek vacation in Oregon this August with her husband, Bob. “One of the highlights was our visit to the Bonneville Dam in the Columbia River Gorge area. We had recently seen "Woody Sez" at the Irish Repertory Theatre and knew that Woody worked as a ‘research assistant’ in 1940 for the Bonneville Power Authority. It was during his time at the dam and learning about the ‘taming’ of the powerful Columbia River and the transformative changes the dam brought that Woody wrote "Roll On, Columbia Roll On." On the day that we visited, I was so moved seeing the sheer force of the water surging through the dam and thousands of salmon swimming against the current to get to their spawning ground, that I burst into choruses of "Roll On, continued on next page 7 Folk Process, continued from previous page Columbia, Roll On"! The nearby Fish Hatchery, maintained by the US Dept. of Conservation is also an amazing place to visit. Another musical highlight was Astoria, a city on the northern coast of Oregon, which used to be the home of the Bumble Bee Salmon and Tuna Canning Factory. Thousands were employed there until it closed in 1981.The factory building now houses a Museum depicting the history of the Bumble Bee operation in Astoria and over and over, we heard the recording of the "Bumble Bee Tuna" jingle: "I love Bumble Bee, Bumble Bee Tuna." It's so well known, we consider it a "folk song" from our youth!” If you have news to share, contact me at 372 Central Park West; #15B, New York, NY 10025; 2126636309, [email protected]
