Green Day und Akustikgitarre? Blöde Idee. Ikonen der E-Gitarre und der Wut, ja. Aber sanfte Akustiker? Aber schnell haben wir gemerkt: Green-Day-Songs sind viel mehr als nur Schram- melfutter für den Baggersee. Vielschichtig und technisch nicht ohne, zumindest wenn man sie genau spielen will. Und die Wut kommt auch nicht zu kurz. Von heute nach gestern, genauer gesagt 100 Jahre zurück. Damals wurde Django Reinhardt geboren, der unter ande- rem dem Titelhelden des Spagetti-Western „Django" den Namen lieh. Und der quasi im Alleingang das Gitarrensolo erfunden hat - mit nur zwei funktionierenden Fingern. Wie er das gemacht hat? Lest selbst! Zu diesen beiden Highlights gibt es natürlich wieder vier komplett transkribierte Songs für euch zum Nach- und Mitspielen sowie eine nette Palette an Tests, darunter das brandneue Elements-System von HK Audio. Sonst haben die Neunziger - besonders musikalisch betrachtet - wenig zu bieten. Der Punkrock erlebt jedoch seine Reinkarnation, als die in Deutschland bisher noch unbekannte Band Green Day mit ihrem Album `Dookie' den Durchbruch schafft. Wenig später sind Tattoos auf einmal wieder in (leider auch Arschge- weihe), und im Radio sind endlich wieder echte Stromgitarren zu hören. Songs wie „Basket Case" und „When I Come Around" sind ganz vorne in den Charts zu fin- den und bescheren der kalifornischen Band um Frontmann Billie Joe Armstrong auch hierzulan- de eine große Fan-Gemeinde. Das fünfte Album `Nimrod', das 1997 erscheint, zeigt erste aku- stische Ansätze von Green Day. Auch auf den folgenden Alben beweisen die Kalifornier, dass sie inzwischen weit mehr als nur einen Power- chord beherrschen. So feiert sogar eine Musical- Inszenierung des Albums 'American Idiot' im letzten Jahr Premiere auf dem Broadway. Wenn man aus Australien kommt und Künstler ist, hat man wohl eine angeborene unkonventionelle Ader. Da ist es egal, ob die Finanzen eine Tour mit minimalistischem Gepäck hergeben oder die Gitarre ständig umgestimmt werden muss. Während die MB-17-G einen Korpus aus der Holzart „Afrikanische Sapele" besitzt, ist die MB- 24-G aus indischem Palisander gefertigt worden. Beide Modelle kom- men in einem Gigbag, das einen ungemein robusten Eindruck macht. Außerdem lässt es sich problemlos auf den Rücken schnallen, wenn man mal auf dem Fahrrad unterwegs ist. Auch wenn es keine aufwändigen Perlmutt-Verzierungen gibt, hat man viel Wert auf kleine Details gelegt, die dem Instrument das gewisse Etwas geben. Dabei bleibt die natürliche Optik jedoch erhalten. Das Logo auf der Kopfplatte ist komplett aus Holz gearbeitet und passt gut zu den goldenen Mechaniken. Der zweiteilige Hals liegt gut in der Hand und ist bei beiden Modellen aus Mahagoni gefräst worden. Die Lagen sind mit kleinen Punkten im Griffbrett gekennzeichnet. Dieses ist genau wie der Steg aus afrikanischem Ebenholz geschnitzt.     THE DESIRE TO FILL Addiction and British Visual Culture, 1751-1919 By Julia Kathryn Skelly A thesis submitted to the Department of Art in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Queen’s University Kingston, Ontario, Canada (July 2010) Copyright © Julia Kathryn Skelly, 2010 Abstract In “The Desire to Fill” I examine British visual culture, including paintings, graphic art, photographs, advertisements and architecture, in relation to the lived experience of addiction. My study begins in 1751, the year that William Hogarth produced his engravings Gin Lane and Beer Street, and it ends in 1919, the year that Alfred Priest exhibited his painting Cocaine at the Royal Academy’s annual Summer Exhibition. There are four underlying arguments in this text. First, that addiction to drugs and alcohol is a manifestation of a desire to “fill a void.” Second, that addiction has long been thought to be legible from the body. Third, that addiction cannot be reliably read from the body, whether in life or an image. Fourth, any project that is concerned with addiction and visual culture is therefore a paradoxical one, and must, by necessity, be a speculative one. My methodological approach in this text is influenced by feminist theory and queer theory, and I explore the history of addiction using a continuist framework. In other words, I suggest that, although the identities of the “addict” and “alcoholic” as we know them today were discursively constructed at the end of the nineteenth century, people experienced addiction before these identities came into being. In that vein, I suggest that the woman in Hogarth’s Gin Lane is an alcoholic, and I show how anxieties about alcoholic mothers have remained remarkably consistent over the last three hundred years.
