F orest Management a n d B a t s | 1 Forest Management and Bats F orest Management a n d B a t s | 2 Bat Basics More than 1,400 species of bats account for almost a quarter of all mammal species worldwide. Bats are exceptionally vulnerable to population losses, in part because they are one of the slowest-reproducing mammals on Earth for their size, with most producing only one young each year. For their size, bats are among the world’s longest-lived mammals. The little brown bat can live up to 34 years in the wild. Contrary to popular misconceptions, bats are not blind and do not become entangled in human hair. Bats are the only mammals capable of true flight. Most bat species use an extremely sophisticated biological sonar, called echolocation, to navigate and hunt for food. Some bats can detect an object as fine as a human hair in total darkness. Worldwide, bats are a primary predator of night-flying Merlin Tuttle insects. A single little brown bat, a resident of North American forests, can consume 1,000 mosquito-sized insects in just one hour. All but three of the 47 species of bats found in the United States and Canada feed solely on insects, including many destructive agricultural pests. The remaining bat species feed on nectar, pollen, and the fruit of cacti and agaves and play an important role in pollination and seed dispersal in southwestern deserts. The 15 million Mexican free-tailed bats at Bracken Cave, Texas, consume approximately 200 tons of insects nightly. -

They are warm-blodded, have fur, give birth to live young and feed their babies milk. 2. What is the wingspan of the biggest bat in the world: 1 foot, 6 feet or 50 feet? Answer: The world’s biggest bat is called a Flying Fox. It lives in Java (in Asia) and has a wingspan of about 6 feet. 3. The smallest bat in the world is the size of what animal: a guinea pig, an ant or a bumblebee? Answer: The smallest bat in the world is the Bumblebee Bat, which lives in Thailand. It is about the size of a bumblebee! 4. Which of the following foods are eaten by bats: insects, fish, blood, nectar or fruit? (Hint: There is more than one correct answer.) WEC389 Florida’s Bats: Tricolored Bat1 Emily Evans, Terry Doonan, and Holly K. Ober2 The tricolored bat, formerly known as the eastern pipistrelle, is the smallest bat found in the state of Florida (Figure 1). It weighs just 0.3 ounces or 8 grams (the weight of a nickel and a penny) and has an approximately 9-inch (210–260 mm) wingspan. Due to their small size and erratic flight pattern, tricolored bats are often mistaken for moths when seen in flight from a long distance away. Figure 2. As of 2016, the USFWS had not yet completed this assessment or issued any decision on whether Threatened or Endangered status was warranted. NATURAL HISTORY Taxonomy: There are five recognized subspecies of Little Brown Myotis: M. l. alascensis, M. l. carissima, M. l. lucifugus, M. l. pernox, and M. l. relictus 2, 3. In Wyoming, M. l. carissima is the only known subspecies3. These sub-specific designations have been questioned as recently as 2008 because of the overlapping ranges of subspecies and evidence of subspecies-level hybridization from mitochondrial and nuclear DNA analyses 4. Description: Little Brown Myotis is, with few exceptions, identifiable in the field 5. The species is a small vespertilionid bat, but medium in size among Myotis species 5. Pelage is variable in color. Generally, the dorsal side is glossy and sooty brown to pale golden brown, while the ventral side is a lighter yellow or olive brown 3, 5, 6. In early summer, juveniles can be distinguished from adults by noticeably darker pelage and lower mass 3. -
