In the final three years of his playing career he became a lightning rod for a heated public debate and widespread media commentary that divided the nation. He publicly called out racism, was named Australian of the Year, was accused of staging for free kicks, and performed an on-field war dance celebration. The cheers became boos as football crowds turned on him. Using only archival footage aired at the time, THE FINAL QUARTER holds a mirror to Australia and is an opportunity to reconsider what happened on and off the football field. Ian Darling, the film’s director, says about THE FINAL QUARTER: “As a filmmaker, I’m drawn to strong characters and what their individual stories can tell us about who we are as Australians. I wanted to know more about why, and how, Goodes had come to be at the centre of this storm that had led to such heated debate and divided the nation.” Adam Goodes did not play a part in making THE FINAL QUARTER but supports the film. Adam Goodes says: “THE FINAL QUARTER is an independent film that tells the story of what happened during the last three years of my career, before I retired in 2015. “It’s made from archival sources and although I didn’t play a part in making it, I’ve given the film my support. “As confronting as I have found the film, I look forward to the conversation it will help generate.’’ THE FINAL QUARTER premiered at the Sydney Film Festival on June 7, 2019. It was later broadcast on Australian television (Channel 10) on July 18, 2019. Shark Island Institute has funded the production of THE FINAL QUARTER from internal sources and will be gifting the film for public use around the nation. Page 1..

Speech by Ian Darling to graduating students, Australian School of Business, University of NSW, April 14, 2008. Chancellor_ Dean_ Graduates_ Ladies and Gentlemen It is a great honour to share this happy occasion with you. I congratulate and commend the graduates for the perseverance and hard work that has earned you the success that we are marking today. No doubt many of you have already embarked on your careers, and your time at the Australian School of Business may seem but a distant memory – but the great thing about a good education is that it will stay with you forever. You will be able to apply the tool kits that you have gained from this outstanding institution right throughout your business career. I wish you great success in those careers and hope that every one of you will make a significant contribution to this country in your particular fields of endeavour. I too graduated in business – firstly with a BA in accounting, and after four years of investment banking I followed this up with an MBA. In life you only need to make a few really good decisions in order to have a fulfilling and rewarding career – and I must say my decision to study business, both at an undergraduate and then post graduate level were undoubtedly two of the best decisions I ever made. Business degrees open many doors, and you can apply your skills across so many different spheres, whether it be in the corporate world, or indeed all areas of government, the Arts, as well as the not for profit or philanthropic world.

He doesn’t want to be forced to rely on anyone, least of all Polly, so he decides to leave his home and drive alone the 3000kms across the continent to Darwin, where the recently passed euthanasia laws lead him to believe he can be in control of his own death. But on this epic journey he meets people who force him to re-evaluate his life. He begins to realize that a life not shared is a life not lived. Sadly it seems wisdom has come too late, until Polly finally gives Rex the courage to act. Against all the odds, in one final heroic act of pure will, he drives his cab back through time and distance to Broken Hill, where he will share what he has left of his life with the one he loves. Filmmaker Biography Jeremy Sims (born in 1966) works as an actor, director, writer and producer across theatre, film and television. Jeremy has had a successful and acclaimed career as an actor, working in film (he received an AFI award ‘Best Actor’ nomination for Idiot Box), on television (he has several Logie and AFI ‘Best Actor’ nominations, winning for Aftershocks in 1996) and on stage, where his reputation as one of Australia’s great actors has been built playing roles like Cyrano De Bergerac and Hamlet to national acclaim.
