Gerard and Nina Basset, co-founders of the highly successful Hotel du Vin chain (and, to boot, a Master of Wine and former hotel inspec- tor respectively), purchased the hotel in 2007 and renovated it with a contemporary feel, using the style and imagination of local craftspeople. Gourmet food matched with delicious wine In a bustling open kitchen, inspired by the Basset’s love of California wine country, head chef, Gavin Barnes creates delicious modern dishes, which have a Californian twist. Gavin forages in the forest for certain ingredients and his preferred choice of food is organic and free-range, sourced from local New Forest suppliers. The wine to accompany your dinner (1/2 bottle per person) will be specially selected by Gerard Basset, winner of Sommelier of the Year 2010, and his award winning wine team, who will be on hand with a wealth of wine knowl- edge and unstuffy advice. • One Sommelier's Fairy-Tale Success
THE WALL STREET JOURNAL. Friday - Sunday, February 10 - 12, 2012 | W3 WINE One Sommelier’s Fairy-Tale Success [ Wine ] BY WILL LYONS There are few who have earned the sobriquet “the world’s greatest wine taster.” The late Harry Waugh, one of England’s most gifted wine merchants, who was so popular in the U.S. that he had a dining room in a restaurant in Tampa, Fla., named after him, was one. Robert Parker, the Baltimore- based wine critic who invented the 100-point tasting scale, is probably another. Michel Bettane, the French wine critic who wrote for La Revue de vin de France for more than 20 years, could be thought of in this bracket. But when it comes to qualifica- tions, one man has sniffed and slurped his way through more wine examinations than perhaps any other. That man is Gérard Basset, 54 years old, who boasts not just a Master of Wine qualifi- cation, but also a Master Somme- lier, and a Wine M.B.A. from the Bordeaux École de Management, for which he wrote a thesis on the psychology of the wine list. Success for Hampshire at the International Wine Challenge Local wine legend Gerard Basset awarded the lifetime achievement award and Hampshire businesses scoop merchant prizes At this year’s International Wine Challenge (IWC) Merchant Awards UK Hampshire had much to celebrate, bringing home this year’s awards for IWC Specialist Merchant Germany and IWC Specialist Merchant Fortified. In addition, renowned wine industry figure and former New Forest resident Gerard Basset was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at the IWC Awards. IWC Specialist Merchant Germany 2019 went to The WineBarn, Winchester, again retaining the title from 2018. Fordingbridge’s Vintage Wine and Port took home the prize for IWC Specialist Merchant Fortified 2019. The Fordingbridge shop is housed in a beautiful 1830s building, and is now the UK’s largest retailer of vintage wine and port gifts online, housing nearly 25,000 bottles in its cellars. This follows on from the success of local Hampshire winery Raimes, which won a sought-after Gold medal in the wine judging for the International Wine Challenge with its Classic Brut 2014 Sparkling, scooping up an impressive 95 out of 100 points. It was one of only two English wines to win a Gold medal in its stage of the competition. Raimes winery is a family-run vineyard that planted its first vines in 2010 and has already won many accolades to which vineyards across the world aspire. The winery exclusively plants Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier and Pinot Noir (the Champagne trio of grapes), which are all perfectly suited to the chalky slopes of the South Downs.

  • Hampshire's Ode to Autumn 2016
Hampshire’s Ode to Autumn If you’re looking for autumnal destinations in the UK, how about picking-up a copy of Keats’ Ode to Autumn, and following in his footsteps on The Keats' Walk in Winchester? He composed the ode in 1819 - regarded by critics as one of the most perfect short poems in the English language - after a walk near Winchester one autumnal evening. It is said that its inspiration was the landscape he walked on daily basis during a stay in Winchester. Recently named the best place to live in Britain, Winchester offers the base for plenty of autumnal walking from the city centre directly into the South Downs National Park. It will also help to introduce the visitor to Hampshire’s best-known author, Jane Austen whose grave can be found inside Winchester Cathedral - one of the many venues in Hampshire which will be marking the 200th anniversary of her death in 2017. Further details can be found on two websites at present: http://janeausten200.co.uk; and http://www.visit-hampshire.co.uk/janeausten. From Winchester, it’s a short drive to Chawton, and a chance to see Jane Austen's House Museum and Chawton House Library. Another seasonal place to visit would be Gilbert White's House in Selborne, which contains the story of the pioneering naturalist who is regarded by many as England's first ecologist, and someone who shaped the modern attitude of respect for nature. As a rural county, autumn is a time of harvesting, and we can find plenty of food- and-drink options to reflect this throughout Hampshire: from its vineyards, to its cider making at somewhere like Upper Neatham Mill.
