The ECG has plans for 28 substation projects at a total cost of about USD58 million and 39 subtransmission line projects at one of about USD32 million by 2012. Funding sources (e.g., the GEDAP and Ghanaian government) have already been determined for most of these projects, but this is not the case for some. (2) Results for the major cities (Accra, Tema, Kumasi, and Takoradi) Sections (a) through (d) present the results for the four major urban areas in the ECG supply area, i.e., Accra, Tema, Kumasi, and Takoradi, respectively. (a) Planning results for the Accra system Figure 1 shows a diagram for the current 33-kV system in the Accra area. In 2008, the maximum demand was 458 MVA. The Accra system has two BSPs (Achimota and Mallam). About 65 percent of the power demand at peak times is supplied from the Achimota BSP. There is a large power flow in supply from the Achimota BSP to central Accra (on the Achimota-Airport section and between the K and D points, for example; the combined power flow value is 219 MVA). A total of 10 circuits of subtransmission lines (with a combined thermal capacity of 310 MVA) are used in these sections. In that year, the maximum peak demand would reach 516 MVA. Attachment 1 lists the existing projects in the Accra area. By 2012, GEDAP, the national government project, and other projects are anticipated to add a total of 480 MVA in transformer capacity and 334 km of subtransmission lines (through extensions). Furthermore, under the national government project, a third BSP is to be constructed in the eastern part of the Accra area. Analysis of the system as of 2012 found that there would not be any overload or voltage problems for the primary substations and subtransmission lines in the Accra area. The existing future plans for primary substations and sub-transmission lines are enough for the maximum demand in 2012. This analysis found overload on the subtransmission line between the H (Achimota) and E points in the system diagram for 2016 shown in Figure 3. As shown in Table 1, the installation of an additional subtransmission line at the overload point was selected as the solution for the aforementioned bottleneck. In 2008, the maximum peak demand was 160 MVA. The Tema 33-kV system is supplied from the Tema BSP. Figure 5 presents a diagram of the system as of 2012 upon implementation of the GEDAP and other existing projects in their entirety. In that year, the maximum peak demand would reach 190 MVA. Attachment 1 lists the existing projects in the Tema area. By 2012, GEDAP, the national government project, and other projects are anticipated to add a total of 200 MVA in transformer capacity and 140 km of subtransmission lines (through extensions). The system will be connected to the BSP built in the Accra area. Analysis of the system as of 2012 found that there would not be any overload or voltage problems for the primary substations and subtransmission lines in the Tema area. This analysis found overload on the subtransmission line between the H (Tema) and E points in the system diagram for 2016 shown in Figure 6. As shown in Table 2, the installation of an additional subtransmission line at the overload point was selected as the solution for the aforementioned bottleneck. Besides resolving the bottleneck in 2016, this step would prevent the occurrence of a bottleneck in 2017 (when the maximum peak demand would reach 4 240 MVA). In 2008, the maximum peak demand was 174 MVA. The Kumasi 33-kV system is supplied from the Kumasi BSP. Figure 8 presents a diagram of the system as of 2012 upon implementation of the GEDAP in its entirety. In that year, the maximum peak demand would reach 211 MVA. Attachment 1 lists the existing projects in the Kumasi area. By 2012, the GEDAP is anticipated to add a total of 120 MVA in transformer capacity and 52 km of subtransmission lines (through extensions). Ghana has a major fault line stretching from the McCarthy Hills area in Accra westwards towards Kasoa-Nyanyanu area in the Central Region and eastwards towards the Akwapim Range all the way to the Volta Region. The epicenter of the fault line is thought to be located around Nyanyanu. Since 1939, when Ghana experienced its severest earthquake which caused a lot of damage with a magnitude of over 6.0 on the Richter scale, there have been reported occurrences of earth tremors in recent times. Kasoa and parts of Accra; Weija, Gbawe, McCarthy Hills, Bortianor, Anyaa and their adjoining areas have experienced a series of Briefing before fieldwork earth tremors which have thrown residents into fear and panic. NADMO and NDC staff Lecture session Seismologists have warned that the continuous earth tremors should not be taken for granted.. The tremors were recorded on 24 March, 2018, 9 Conclusion December, 2018 and January - March 2019 with magnitude ranging from 3.0 to 4.8 on the Richter scale. THE TEN CHECKPOINT LIST TO His Excellency President John Atta Mills visited and expressed sympathy for the victims at MAKING CITIES RESILIENT Circle, Achimota New Town, Alajo, and Domi. Also the Deputy Minister for the Interior led a special entourage including the National Coordinator of NADMO, Mr Kofi Portuphy, to Mallam Junction/Market and Adabraka Sahara. At Adabraka Sahara the entourage sympathized with the bereaved family of an electrocuted person. Rapid assessment is on-going to ascertain total victims/damage. So far fourteen (14) deaths has been recorded as at Monday, 31st October, 2011 Emergency Phase NADMO and 48 Engineers conducted a joint search and rescue (SAR) operation during the immediate response phase at the following locations.     Small and Medium Forest Enterprises in Ghana Small and medium forest enterprises (SMFEs) serve as the main or additional source of income for more than three million Ghanaians and can be broadly categorised into wood forest products, non-wood forest products and forest services. Many of these SMFEs are informal, untaxed and largely invisible within state forest planning and management. Pressure on the forest resource within Ghana is growing, due to both domestic and international demand for forest products and services. The need to improve the sustainability and livelihood contribution of SMFEs has become a policy priority, both in the search for a legal timber export trade within the Voluntary Small and Medium Partnership Agreement (VPA) linked to the European Union Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (EU FLEGT) Action Plan, and in the quest to develop a national Forest Enterprises strategy for Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD). This sourcebook aims to shed new light on the multiple SMFE sub-sectors that in Ghana operate within Ghana and the challenges they face. Chapter one presents some characteristics of SMFEs in Ghana. Chapter two presents information on what goes into establishing a small business and the obligations for small businesses and Ghana Government’s initiatives on small enterprises. Chapter three presents profiles of the key SMFE subsectors in Ghana including: akpeteshie (local gin), bamboo and rattan household goods, black pepper, bushmeat, chainsaw lumber, charcoal, chewsticks, cola, community-based ecotourism, essential oils, ginger, honey, medicinal products, mortar and pestles, mushrooms, shea butter, snails, tertiary wood processing and wood carving.

    Flooding in the Greater Accra Region claims 12 lives on April 15, 2019 BACKGROUND/ DEMOGRAPHY Map of the Greater Accra Region ü The Greater Accra Region is the administrative capital of Ghana, occupying a total land area of 3,245 square kilometres. ü In terms of population, it is the second most populous region after the Ashanti Region, with a population of 4,010,054 according to the 2010 population census. This accounts for 15.4 per cent of Ghana’s total population. © Wikipedia ü Politically, administration of the region is organized through the Local Government system. Under this administration system, the region is divided into five districts namely Accra Metropolitan Area, Tema Municipal Area, Ga East District, Ga West District, Dangme West District and Dangme East District. ü The Accra Metropilitan Area is administered by a Chief Executive, representing the Central Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greater_Accra_Region#/media/ Government but deriving authority from an File:Districts_of_the_Greater_Accra_Region_(2012).svg Assembly headed by a Presiding Member elected from the members of the Assembly. ü In the last few years, severe floods hit the capital city, Accra. For instance, on June 3rd 2015, heavy rains caused flooding that impacted many parts of the Greater Accra Region. Over 200 people lost their lives, many were displaced and a number of properties destroyed. ü In addition to this, are the costs of disrupted livelihoods and economic activities coupled with health risks brought about by the floods. INCIDENT PROFILE Following the recent rains that hit some parts of the country, 12 lives have been lost in the Greater Accra Region.
