(Pindar) Water. There's too much of it, or too little. It's too salty, or too sweet. It wells up from the ground, carves itself a way through the land, and then it's called a river or a stream. It descends from the heavens in a variety of forms - as dew or hail, to mention just the extremes. And then, of course, there is the all-encompassing water which we call the sea, and which reminds us of the beginning of all things. The English once labelled the Netherlands across the North Sea ‘this indigested vomit of the sea’. But the Dutch went to work on that vomit, systematically and stubbornly: ‘... their tireless hands manufactured this land, / drained it and trained it and planed it and planned’ (James Brockway). As God's subcontractors they gradually became experts in living apart together. Look carefully at the first photo. The water has struck again. We're talking 1926. Gelderland. The small, stocky woman visiting the stricken province is Queen Wilhelmina. Without turning a hair she allows herself to be carried over the waters. -

Recensie: Hooverphonic | Reflection Tour***** Koninklijk Circus Brussel vrijdag 4 april 2014 foto © Tom Van Alphen Recensie: Hooverphonic vond zichzelf opnieuw uit in het Koninklijk Circus. Alles maar dan ook alles klopte van begin tot einde. De vintage setting recht uit de Kringloopwinkel: tapijt, een zetel, 3 houten meubelstukken waaronder één kast met tl lampen verwerkt in de schappen, enkele oude luidsprekers, goudkleurige bureaulampen die naar enkele muzikanten gericht zijn voor een extra lichteffect, een tiental ronde hanglampen met blauw doorschijnende kap erover en dat in een venue die van de negentiende eeuw dateert en erg veel houtwerk (inclusief de zitjes) aan de binnenkant heeft. Zelfs een tv addict van een commercieel televisiestation die zijn zetel niet uit komt, ziet daar de meerwaarde van. "Er is iets met deze zaal. Er hangt magie. Ik heb hier alleen nog maar geweldige concerten gezien“ zegt Callier die meegeeft dat het concert van zijn band vlotjes ook in dat rijtje mocht passen. Zo'n statement voelt wat aan als erg goeie seks gehad hebben, waarna meteen je sekspartner om de bevestiging vraagt dat het écht wel "top“ was. Dat werkt werkelijk zo dodelijk op de sfeer, en breekt de magie in geen tijd. Maar zo'n opmerking, hoe ongelukkig ook, is Alex Callier ook ten voeten uit ... Live staan Raymond Geerts (elektrische gitaar), Noémie Wolfs (zang) en Alex Callier (bas) met drummer Arnout Hellofs, toetsenist David Poltrock, gitarist en backing Joey Brocken, en toetsenist/gitarist/backing Tom Tritsmans op het podium tijdens deze sold out Reflection Tour. Hun jongste plaat heeft opnieuw platina gehaald wat in deze tijden verre van evident is welke perceptie een artiest met artiestennaam die een anagram van het woord Maestro vormt ook mag creëren. -

Hooverphonic Een Goed Liedje En Een Mooi Jong Meisje Op
Hooverphonic Een goed liedje en een mooi jong meisje op een Toscaans landgoed: dat is wat de Belgische groep Hoover in 1996 nodig had om wereldwijd bekend te worden. Het mooie jonge meisje was Liv Tyler. Ze speelde de hoofdrol in Bernardo Bertolucci’s film Stealing Beauty. Op de soundtrack van die film kon je ‘2wicky’ horen, de single die Hoover al heel wat airplay bezorgd had op Europese en Amerikaanse radiostations. ‘2wicky’ sloot muzikaal nauw aan bij de triphop van de Britse Bristol-scene, met groepen als Portishead, Massive Attack en Tricky, die op dat moment erg populair was. Op het moment dat Stealing Beauty in de zalen kwam, had Hoover al een eerste plaat uit, a new stereophonic sound spectacular (1996), waarop naast ‘2wicky’ nog tien andere triphop-achtige songs terug te vinden waren. Duidelijk geinspireerd door de elektronische muziek van de jaren ’80 en het retro-futuristische sfeertje dat daarbij hoorde, was a new... een soundscape eerder dan een plaat met mooi afgebakende liedjes die duidelijk van elkaar onderscheidbaar zijn. Desondanks blijft ‘2wicky’ toch met voorsprong de beste track van de plaat, al was het maar om de sterke sample uit Isaac Hayes’ ‘Walk on by’ die de hele klankkleur van het nummer bepaalt. Ook Jim Gillespie gebruikte ‘2wicky’ in zijn film I know what you did last summer (1997), waar het een moordscène muzikaal mocht ondersteunen. Het refreintje van ‘2wicky’ begint dan ook met de regels ‘i can hurt you / you can hurt me’. Na de debuutplaat veranderde de naam en de bezetting van de groep. -
