My initial impression with records like this is that this is ‘sadness’ on tap. as if being sad and tortured is career move and this at its worst it sits exactly at the midpoint of Coldplay, The xx and Dido. There is a lot to worry about with this record but the singer does have a lovely voice, it’s a shame it cracks so much like the lady from The xx’s voice does. The timbre of the voice recalls Bat For Lashes but the musical accompaniment suggests they’ve listened to ‘post-rock’, taking the atmospherics from the like of Sigur Ros but blanding it out even more. Opener ‘Winter’ though suggests something more, some nice atmospheric guitar loops and thumping drums - just when it gets going it breaks down - everyone has to have an atmospheric breakdown these days - I lay the blame firmly at the door of U2’s ‘Beautiful Day’ for this irritating production tick. But the song is great, a swirling cacophony of sound. ‘Smother’ is a blanched out xx - it’s nice but feels a little like a by numbers post-60-hour-week-in-the-call-centre weep fest. There is nothing necessarily ‘wrong’ with the music here, the guitars are nice, she can sing pretty well. It’s just so safe and careful. I once watched Lanterns On The Lake turn a room of people into jelly whilst I stood completely unmoved. This band are similar, taking post-rock atmospherics but marrying it to a more conventional songcraft that is perfectly valid but seems too measured, too knowing to tug at a heartstring. 10/10 HaZ 23rd July 2013. Upon hearing this record as a recommendation from one of my closest friends, I had a rough idea it was gonna sound mellow and filled with a bunch of music echoes. In fact, it definitely is! Much to my liking, this band provides a sort of comfort to a listener; understanding ones raw emotions through the way Elena Tonra (singer) depicts in her choice of lyrical muse and music - it's the kind of music where you're either going through a break-up or in a desperate need to be held by someone, a loved one or a family member, to tell you that you're safe and sound. Her vocals are alarmingly sweet, backed with heavy accented drumming as heard in 'Youth' and cautiously filled with interesting rhythmic ringing of guitars chords. Given its beginnings as Elena Tonra's solo project, it would be easy to assume that Daughter is just another singer/songwriter act with a couple of supporting musicians. However, over the course of If You Leave, Tonra, guitarist Igor Haefeli, and drummer Remi Aguilella make it clear that this is the work of a band. Together, they swing between moments of close-up intimacy and widescreen majesty, often during the course of one song. These songs have so many ebbs and flows that they're practically tidal: "Lifeforms" swells from spiraling guitars that recall the xx in their moody simplicity into towering rock that makes the most of Haefeli's amps and Aguilella's kit. That said, the most powerful part of Daughter's music is Tonra's lyrics, which are full of striking images that echo and intensify the music's mix of detail and drama. Heartbreak leaves physical destruction in its wake on "Youth," where the loveless are "setting fire to our insides for fun"; "Still" uses careful and clever parallel structures to track a relationship's decay, making a poignant contrast between when things were good and when they weren't. If You Leave's haunted, wounded, and weary songs aren't always the easiest listening; there's a fine line between brooding and moping, and while Daughter mostly stay on the right side of it, they wobble occasionally, to the point where the brisk acoustic guitars on "Human" feel like opening the windows in a stuffy room. Tonra's voice, which has just the right balance of warmth and ethereality, helps carry the album through its darkest moments and shines especially brightly on the closing track, "Shallows," a slow-building, seven-minute epic that earns its drama and shows what they can do with that kind of space. Even if their meditations on heartbreak and death can be overwhelming occasionally, If You Leave proves that Daughter can channel a single mood over the course of an entire album with often exquisite results.
