Lord Balaram Vanquishes Ignorance Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis Lord Balaram Vanquishes Ignorance Date: 2010-08-23 Author: Govinda caran das Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis, Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva. Just thought of sharing a nice pastime of Lord Balarama killing Dhenukasura as a meditation for the upcoming appearance day of Lord Balarama and the important lessons to be learnt from this pastime. Once when Krishna and Balaram were sporting in the forest of Vrindavan along with Their cows and friends, Their friends petitioned to Them as follows: “There is a big forest named Talavan nearby which is full of palm trees that are have ripe fruits. But because of a great demon called Dhenukasura, it is very difficult to go there and one can only smell the sweet aroma of the fruits.” Desiring to please Their friends, Krishna and Balaram entered the Talavan forest. Balaram began to yank the trees with His powerful arms. Upon hearing the sound of the falling fruits, the demon Dhenukasura who was living there in the form of an ass, approached with great force and kicked Balaram’s chest with his hind legs. Balaram immediately caught hold of the legs of the ass with one hand and, wheeling him around, threw him into the treetops and thus killed him. This caused an avalanche effect as the palm trees fell upon other trees. In order to retaliate, the friends of Dhenukasura immediately came there and attacked Balaram and Krishna with great force. Krishna and Balaram caught each of the asses by the hind legs and killed them by wheeling them around and throwing them into the trees. After a few days, people began to come to the Talavan forest to collect the fruits. Animals also began to go there to eat the nice grasses there without fear of the demon anymore. To help us understand this pastime His Divine Grace Srila Prabhupada very nicely explains in the Krishna book as follows 1. Dhenukasura represents ignorance of knowledge of the soul through gross materialistic intelligence, or jackass-like foolishness. 2. Lord's cowherd boyfriends are exalted, self-realized souls who would not ordinarily become greedy for sweet fruits. In fact, they were simply joking with the Lord and enthusing His pastimes, urging Him to perform unprecedented heroic feats in the Tala forest. 3. According to the Garga Samhita, in his previous life Dhenukasura was a son of Bali Maharaja named Sahasika. Once while Sahasika was enjoying with 10,000 women on Mount Gandhamadana, he made a lot of noise which disturbed the meditation of Durvasa Muni. So Durvasa cursed him to become an ass, saying: "Fool! Ass-like person! Become an ass! O demon, after 400,000 years, in transcendental circle of Mathura, in the sacred forest of Talavana, you will attain liberation by Lord Balarama's hand." 4. Dhenukasura could not be killed by Krsna because Krsna had given His word to Prahlada Maharaja that He would not kill any of his family members. The first point in the above list on our ignorance is worth meditating. We are all immersed in the darkness of ignorance. Most of the time like Dhenukasura we forget the truth that we are just trustees here for whatever health/wealth/power which Lord has blessed us in this life time. So engrossed in the thoughts of "my" and "mine" we keep fighting with everyone around and try to grab. Lord Krishna says in Bhagavad Gita verse 10.8 - "aham sarvasya prabhavo". Nothing belongs to us. So who are we to prevent others from enjoying the fruits that has been created by the Lord for all ? Even after understanding that it is wrong to have this attitude such anarthas might keep cropping in our minds. It is not possible to give up these bad thoughts and cleanse our hearts on our own. We need to take shelter of Lord Balarama and surrender unto Him. When we do so just like how He carried and threw Dhenukasura away, He will also kill all the anarthas in our heart. In Srimad Bhagavatam verse 10.15.5, Lord Krishna glorifies Lord Balarama very nicely as follows śrī-bhagavān uvāca aho amī deva-varāmarārcitaṁ pādāmbujaṁ te sumanaḥ-phalārhaṇam namanty upādāya śikhābhir ātmanas tamo-’pahatyai taru-janma yat-kṛtam The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: O greatest of Lords, just see how these trees are bowing their heads at Your lotus feet, which are worshipable by the immortal demigods. The trees are offering You their fruits and flowers to eradicate the dark ignorance that has caused their birth as trees. In the purport to above verse it is mentioned that - The trees of Vrindavana were thinking that because of past offenses they had now taken birth as trees and, being immovable, could not accompany Lord Krishna in His wanderings throughout the Vrindavana area. In fact, all the creatures of Vrindavana, including the trees and cows, were great souls who could personally associate with the Supreme Personality of Godhead. But because of ecstatic sentiments of separation, the trees considered themselves in ignorance and thus tried to purify themselves by bowing down at the lotus feet of Krishna and Balarama. Lord Krishna understanding their mentality, simultaneously glanced at them with affection and praised their devotional service before His older brother, Balarama. So may we bow down to the powerful, magnanimous Lord Balarama and seek His mercy to cleanse our hearts and remove our ignorance so that we could serve the Supreme Lord Sri Krishna sincerely with full vigour. Jaya Krishna-Balaram! Hare Krishna. Thank you very much. Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada, Govinda caran das. Seattle. • The Deities of New Vrindaban
The Deities of New Vrindaban Aaron Boyd, Maggie Dorsten, Lauren Spartano, and Stephanie Villaire 1 Deity Worship in the Hare Krishna Faith Hare Krishna devotees make the distinction that they perform Deity worship and not idol worship. Madhudvisa dasa, a member of the New Vrindaban community, explains, “It is Krishna on the altar, not a stone statue or an idol. But unless our eyes are purified we can’t see Krishna, we think he is a statue…but he is Krishna. We worship Krishna, not a ‘form of Krishna’ or a ‘statue of Krishna’.” In other words, Krishna is so spiritual that He cannot be seen with the senses. Therefore, Krishna agrees to appear in the form of a Deity so that devotees can worship and make offerings to Him. More specifically, each day, the devotees cook seven meals for Krishna, bathe and dress Him, and chant and sing songs for Him. Deity Construction No hard and fast rules exist to govern the type of material from which the Deities must be constructed. A Deity (also known as a “murti”) can be made out of any type of material because devotees believe that Krishna can appear in any form. According to Madhudvisa dasa, “The Deity is made by a devotee, but the devotee doesn’t try to ‘make’ Krishna. He prays for Krishna to appear in the form of the Deity.” Installing Deities The question of whether or not to open a Hare Krishna center must be considered carefully before actions are taken. Once a Hare Krishna temple is installed, it is impossible to un-install the Deities within it.

Srila Mahavishnu Goswami Maharaj Vyasa Puja 2016 - Part 8 Date: 2016-12-20 Author: Sudarshana devi dasi Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis, Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva. This is in continuation of the previous offering titled "Srila Mahavishnu Goswami Maharaj Vyasa Puja 2016", wherein we were hearing some of the glorifications of Maharaj, which were shared by the devotees in Sri Sri Radha Neel Madhav dham, Rajkot on the auspicious occasion of his Vyasa Puja. Now we shall hear further. HG Ambarish Prabhuji from New Zealand: Many years ago when the construction of Sri Sri Radha NeelMadhav was about to begin, we had inquired Maharaj as to whether Maharaj had any design in mind. Maharaj replied, "I don't know. But I want it to be a very grand marble temple for Their Lordships." And true enough, the construction we see now is a beautiful manifestation of all the devotees' love, hardwork and dedication to fulfill Maharaj's wish of offering this wonderful temple to Srila Prabhupada. I really wish that day come soon when we are able to complete the temple construction. I remember Maharaj saying, "Krishna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead and is the husband of goddess of fortune. If He wants, He can complete the temple anytime. For Him why should I become a beggar? Why should I ask for money?" I was shocked when I heard this and was wondering how can we say this so boldly. But it shows Maharaj's faith on Krishna. Maharaj said, "Chant your rounds.

  • Worship of Balarama in Coochbehar: a Historical Study
Journal of the Asiatic Society of Bangladesh (Hum.), Vol. 60(1), 2015, pp. 79-90 WORSHIP OF BALARAMA IN COOCHBEHAR: A HISTORICAL STUDY Bijoy Kumar Sarkar* Abstract The worship of Balarama, the elder of Krishna was very popular in the Kamta- Koch Kingdom; he is still worshipped independently or along with Krishna in a number of temples in Coochbehar. However, he still remains utterly untouched historically and independently as he should have been. An attempt has been made here to study the background, nature and extent of Balarama’s worship in the Coochbehar State along with exploring out the causes of its immense popularity. The question of Balarama’s worship as one of the Vyuhas and/or of the Avataras or something else has also been addressed. Keeping in view the simultaneous worship of Balarama and Manasa on special occasions, their relationship in popular concept has also been investigated. We have consulted the original source materials complementing with relevant secondary sources and undertaken field trips to explore the issue. It is found that Balaram’s identity as a patron of agriculture and a deity of fertility - Hala (ploughshare) being his most distinctive weapon and Halayudha as his nomenclature – contributed considerably to his popularity among the pre-dominantly agricultural people of the Kamata-Koch Kingdom. The history of Vishnu-worship may be traced in Kamarupa from early times in light of erection of a cave temple for Balabhadrasvamin in the 5th century A.D. In Kamarupa and Kamata-Koch Kingdom, the Bhakti movement, known as Neo- Vaishnavism, was launched by Sankaradeva.

  • The Mahabharata of Krishna-Dwaipayana Vyasa
The Mahabharata of Krishna-Dwaipayana Vyasa Translated into English Prose from the Original Sanskrit Text. By Kisari Mohan Ganguli [1883-1896] TRANSLATOR'S PREFACE The object of a translator should ever be to hold the mirror upto his author. That being so, his chief duty is to represent so far as practicable the manner in which his author's ideas have been expressed, retaining if possible at the sacrifice of idiom and taste all the peculiarities of his author's imagery and of language as well. In regard to translations from the Sanskrit, nothing is easier than to dish up Hindu ideas, so as to make them agreeable to English taste. But the endeavour of the present translator has been to give in the following pages as literal a rendering as possible of the great work of Vyasa. To the purely English reader there is much in the following pages that will strike as ridiculous. Those unacquainted with any language but their own are generally very exclusive in matters of taste. Having no knowledge of models other than what they meet with in their own tongue, the standard they have formed of purity and taste in composition must necessarily be a narrow one. The translator, however, would ill-discharge his duty, if for the sake of avoiding ridicule, he sacrificed fidelity to the original. He must represent his author as he is, not as he should be to please the narrow taste of those entirely unacquainted with him. Mr. Pickford, in the preface to his English translation of the Mahavira Charita, ably defends a close adherence to the original even at the sacrifice of idiom and taste against the claims of what has been called 'Free Translation,' which means dressing the author in an outlandish garb to please those to whom he is introduced.

Krishna Book Chapter 23: Delivering the Wives of the B... http://krsnabook.com/ch23.html The morning passed, and the cowherd boys were very hungry because they had not eaten breakfast. They immediately approached Krsna and Balarama and said, "Dear Krsna and Balarama, You are both all-powerful; You can kill many, many demons, but today we are much afflicted with hunger, and this is disturbing us. Please arrange for something that will mitigate our hunger." Requested in this way by Their friends, Lord Krsna and Balarama immediately showed compassion on certain wives of brahmanas who were performing sacrifices. These wives were great devotees of the Lord, and Krsna took this opportunity to bless them. He said, "My dear friends, please go to the house of the brahmanas nearby. They are now engaged in performing Vedic sacrifices known as angirasa, for they desire elevation to heavenly planets. All of you please go to them." Then Lord Krsna warned His friends, "These brahmanas are not Vaisnavas. They cannot even chant Our names, Krsna and Balarama. They are very busy in chanting the Vedic hymns, although the purpose of Vedic knowledge is to find Me. But because they are not attracted by the names of Krsna and Balarama, you had better not ask them for anything in My name. Better ask for some charity in the name of Balarama." Charity is generally given to high class brahmanas, but Krsna and Balarama did not appear in a brahmana family. Balarama was known as the son of Vasudeva, a ksatriya, and Krsna was known in Vrndavana as the son of Nanda Maharaja, who was a vaisya.
