Olsen: San Antonio's West Side Sound San Antonio’s SideSound West Antonio’s San West Side Sound The West Side Sound is a remarkable they all played an important role in shaping this genre, Allen O. Olsen amalgamation of different ethnic beginning as early as the 1950s. Charlie Alvarado, Armando musical influences found in and around Almendarez (better known as Mando Cavallero), Frank San Antonio in South-Central Texas. It Rodarte, Sonny Ace, Clifford Scott, and Vernon “Spot” Barnett includes blues, conjunto, country, all contributed to the creation of the West Side Sound in one rhythm and blues, polka, swamp pop, way or another. Alvarado’s band, Charlie and the Jives, had such rock and roll, and other seemingly regional hits in 1959 as “For the Rest of My Life” and “My disparate styles. All of these have Angel of Love.” Cavallero had an influential conjunto group somehow been woven together into a called San Antonio Allegre that played live every Sunday sound that has captured the attention of morning on Radio KIWW.5 fans worldwide. In a sense, the very Almendarez formed several groups, including the popular eclectic nature of the West Side Sound rock and roll band Mando and the Chili Peppers. Rodarte led reflects the larger musical environment a group called the Del Kings, which formed in San Antonio of Texas, in which a number of ethnic during the late 1950s, and brought the West Side Sound to Las communities over the centuries have Vegas as the house band for the Sahara Club, where they exchanged musical traditions in a remained for nearly ten years.6 Sonny Ace had a number of prolific “cross-pollination” of cultures. -

Western Swing Narrator: Western Swing is a distinct musical genre that combines different influences found in Texas and the American Southwest. N: Popularized by Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys, Western Swing enjoyed a heyday three decades long, from the 1930s to the 1950s. N: It delighted the audiences on the radio and at dance halls, on records and in the movies. N: One of the most successful of American popular music styles, its energy, complexity, and beauty continue to resonate with musicians and fans alike. N: At its root, Western Swing is dance music that combines elements of many different genres including country, jazz, polka, mariachi, pop, blues, and more. N: It began to evolve into a distinctive style in the late 1920s when hot-string bands on the dance hall circuit started to experiment and expand their sense with different songs and styles. (Music playing) N: Other bands, such as the High Flyers and Clayton McMichen’s Georgia Wild Cats, were playing proto-Western Swing in the mid to late 1920s; however, Texans Bob Wills and Milton Brown in particular are widely credited with creating the genre. N: Both were born in the early years of the twentieth century in rural areas and, like so many other families after the great crash of 1929, found themselves transplanted to an urban area, in this case, Fort Worth, Texas. (Music Playing) N: Milton Brown’s smooth jazz vocals and Bob Wills’ traditional breakdown fiddling blended in a unique new way. N: The combos they led became extremely popular around Fort Worth and throughout the Southwest. -

Former Center for Popular Music Director Dale Cockrell and Archivist Lucinda Cockrell picked up the collection from the home of Mr. Morris and transported it to the Center. Arrangement: The original arrangement scheme for the collection was maintained during processing. The exception to this arrangement was the audio/visual materials, which in the absence of any original order, are organized by format. Collection is arranged in six series: 1. General files; 2. Davis, Editor https://www.texasdancehall.org EDITORIAL As 2017 draws to a close, I’ve been thinking back on Texas Dance Hall Preservation’s first decade and looking forward to our next ten years. TDHP is A look back over evolving from an all-volunteer group into a “grown-up” nonprofit organization, TDHP’s first ten with staff and regular programming, one that is starting to make a significant positive impact for dance halls here in the Lone Star state. We are working to years and ahead to help dance halls stay open, become financially sustainable, and maintain those the future iconic buildings. In the past several years, we’ve made great strides. Many dance halls are owned by all-volunteer nonprofit organizations, and the halls typically have unmet maintenance or building systems needs. In 2016, TDHP started a Preservation Fund and has made small grants to four nonprofit halls. We’ve helped dance hall owners earn revenue and find other funding for hall repairs, and we’ve consulted with them on how to make appropriate changes that don’t damage the important historic elements that make dance hall architecture unique. -

Swiatlowski: The Sound of Ethnic America: Prewar “Foreign-Language” Records and the Sonics of US Citizenship (Under the direction of Jocelyn R. Neal) This dissertation explores the juncture of sound and citizenship to consider how the boundaries of nation are maintained at both geospatial and cultural borders. Specifically, the project concerns “foreign-language” recordings made by US recording companies prior to World War II (hereafter, prewar). With the onset of war in Europe in 1914, “foreign-language” recordings were increasingly cut domestically, featuring vernacular performers of the Great Wave of immigration that brought Hungarian, Syrian, Ukrainian, Turkish, Polish, Mexican, Chinese, and Japanese peoples, alongside a host of other nationalities, to the US beginning in the latter half of the nineteenth century. Initially marketed to specific immigrant populations in the US, these recordings eventually became the province of postwar record collectors and the reissue music market by the 1970s. The narrative of the project draws much of its power by connecting their discrete moments of circulation with the political realities that shaped their audition. As such, the project examines the interplay between, what I call, the “national vernacular imaginary” and state policy in regards to immigration and citizenship. -

Fitch explores the advent and influence of Sarg Records, a small independently owned record label cultivated by WWII hero, Sgt. Charlie Fitch. With his unconventional approach to the recording industry, Fitch redefined Texas music in the 1950s by mixing ethnic styles and different genres to create entirely new ones. Although, Sarg played a significant role in launching some of today’s rock ‘n roll and country music legends, the label’s legacy arguably lies in the overlooked and undervalued treasures from it’s relatively unknown artists. The story of Sarg Records is a tale of minor enterprise dealing with TV repair, jukeboxes and records in a small Texas town located 40 miles from San Antonio. Luling is a South Texas oil town renowned for its petroleum and watermelon farms, but not for it’s music. Nevertheless, what began at the Luling Phonograph and Record Shop at 311 East Davis Street in 1953 produced or influenced music heard throughout the entire world today. Charlie Fitch, the engine behind Sarg Records, enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1940. He served as a tail gunner on over one hundred battle missions in WWII, and became a war hero on his final mission when his B-17 bomber took a hit from a Nazi anti-aircraft missile over Frankfurt on the morning of November 5, 1944.
