The information which it contains has been compiled chiefly from the Masonic records in the archives of Philip C. Tucker, for free and frequent access to which the author is indebted to the widow and family of the late Grand Cornpiander. The only virtue that is claimed for this work is its cor- rect portrayal of the life of the Rite in Texas. The author, himself, at the time of writing, the oldest thirty-third de- gree Honorary Scottish Rite Mason in Texas, has drawn readily upon his more or less extensive fund of informa- tion concerning the Rite in this State, not for the purpose of writing down his recollections or beliefs concerning its establishment and progress, but merely for the sugges- tion of lines of investigation that carefully and definitely pursued might lead to the acquisition of data about the authenticity of which there could be no shadow of doubt. More than twelve months were spent in this undertak- ing. The author visited frequently the several Consis- tories of Texas and going once to Washington to examine the records of the Supreme Council for information un- obtainable here. -

SCS Swiss Chemical Society Annual Report 2019 SCS Award Winners 2019 Published in CHIMIA Volume 74, No 1-2/2020 scg.ch/awards David Spichiger Introduction and Strategy The SCS awarded six individuals and one group of scientists for their outstanding contributions. A total sum of CHF 80’000 as well as medals and award certificates were given to the prize winners. With pleasure we look back on a very interesting and active year. The Swiss Chemical Society not only continued and developed its Werner Prize well-established activities but again pushed new initiatives to face CHF 10'000 and medal in bronze; awarded to a promising young todays challenges. GLEASON Why Pursue Scottish Rite Masonry? Although there is no more important degree than that of the Master Mason, the additional 29 Scottish Rite degrees serve to enrich a Brother’s comprehension of the philosophy and symbolic teaching he received when he was initiated into Freemasonry. When you choose to further your Masonic experience by becoming a 32° Scottish Rite Mason**, you will expand upon your knowledge of Freemasonry’s fundamental principles. The moral and ethical lessons we learn together, will continuously remind us of our duties to family, country, humanity, nature and the Great Architect of the Universe. You do not have to receive all 29 degrees to become a 32° Mason. However, receiving a minimum of five degrees is required. The Origins of the Scottish Rite A vague reference to the name "Scottish Rite" can be found in a manuscript dating back to 1733: ''Lodge #115 meeting at the Devil Tavern near Temple Bar in London was described as a Scott's Masons Lodge." The exact origin of the name, however, still remains a mystery to this day. A plausible explanation might be found in late 17th-century European history. When the British Isles were torn by political and religious conflicts, many Scots from the nobility, particularly from the Stuart dynasty, fled to France to seek King Louis XIV's protection. -

The number of translational scientific discoveries and technological innovations derived from the center’s research labs over the course of the past three decades has been remarkable. Brief biography of professor Richard Zare Born on 19 November, 1939 in Cleveland, Ohio, USA, Dr. Richard Zare is the Marguerite Blake Wilbur Professor in Natural Science, Department of Chemistry, Stanford University. His research covers many different areas but is quite noted for advances in laser chemistry, resulting in a greater understanding of chemical reactions at the molecular level and contributing very significantly to solving a variety of problems in chemical analysis. His development of laser induced fluorescence as a method for studying reaction dynamics has been widely adopted in other laboratories. Awards include the U.S. National Medal of Science (1983), the Welch Award in Chemistry (1999), the Wolf Prize in Chemistry (2005), the BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award in the Basic Sciences (2010), and the King Faisal International Prize in Science (2011). He has also received honorary doctorates from Uppsala University and Chalmers Institute of Technology among other institutions. His memberships include the National Academy of Sciences, the Royal Society, the Swedish Royal Academy of Engineering Sciences, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Indian Academy of Sciences, and The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) for developing countries. From 1992 to 1998, he served on the National Science Board, the policy making board of the United States National Science Foundation, the last two years as its Chair. Burke, Assistant Professor of Chemistry Donald Burke joined the chemistry department as an assistant professor after receiving a PhD at the University of Califormia, Berkeley, and postdoctoral studies at the University of Colorado. We are indebted to him for this summary of the ongoing efforts in his and others' laborotories in this exciting research area. The Editors RNA-based life? It is the sort of thing they might have used on Star Trek, if they could have found a way to work it into the plot. They had creatures made from gigantic crystals, swarms of microscopic robots with a collective consciousness, and creatures that floated through outer space. Vulcan biochemistry was different enough that it used copper in place of iron to carry oxygen. Why not a cellular life form devoid of proteins, that used RNA molecules to perform catalysis and maintain genetic information? For the most part, if a macromolecule is doing work in a cell here on earth, that molecule is a protein, with a few notable, but isolated exceptions. Does it have to be that way? Can RNA replace proteins or even repair metabolic damage wrought by proteins that misbehave? The question lies at the heart of some avenues of biomedical and microbial engineering, and the answer may reveal much about the earliest forms of life on earth. The last four decades have seen a steady shift in the perception of RNA's role in biology.
