Curculionid-beetles (Coleoptera: Curculionoidea) is the largest superfamily in Arthropoda with a number of important agricultural pests within the taxon. The fauna of Iranian Curculionoidea including the families Anthribidae (3 species), Rhynchitidae (15 species), Attelabidae (2 species), Brentidae (76 species), Brachyceridae (2 species), Dryophthoridae (8 species) and Curculionidae (651 species) is discussed in this paper. 757 species from 245 genera are listed with 61 new records for the fauna of Iran. -

ANDERSON CANADA Mike Morris (retired) September 1992, Poland CURCULIO EDITORIAL COMMENTS Yes, this number of CURCULIO is late. It should have been prepared and sent out in September of 1996, but our museum has been going through a move to new facilities and things have been in turmoil. We are now settled in and most services are up and running again. The collections, which were packed away for the move, are also now accessible again. Seems that things went quite well and in fact our Entomology section fared quite well as the move into our new facilities resulted in a great deal more space than we already had. We’re now getting the laboratories prepared and should be back to full speed in the near future. Our mailing address has not changed! On another note, congratulations are in order for Rolf Oberprieler who has accepted the weevil systematics position at CSIRO in Canberra, Australia. This will be a great new challenge for Rolf and one in which we can all be sure he will fare admirably. The Australian weevil fauna is exceptionally diverse and interesting and with the recent books by Elwood Zimmerman, a great base has been set for further and more detailed work on the fauna. I understand Rolf will be there sometime this summer. Now all he has to do is master ‘G’Day’ and ‘mate’ and he’ll have it made! Best wishes to Rolf and his family. -

In addition, any quotation or extract must include full attribution. 1 Molecular Phylogenetics of the Superfamily Curculionoidea (Insecta: Coleoptera) Conrad Paulus Dias Trafford Gillett March 2014 Thesis abstract This thesis examines higher-level evolutionary history within the superfamily Curculionoidea, the most speciose family-level taxon, which includes beetles commonly known as weevils. This is achieved using a phylogenetic approach incorporating the largest datamatrix yet employed for weevil molecular systematics, and includes an investigation into the prospect of obtaining short phylogenetically informative amplicons from archival museum specimens. Newly obtained DNA sequence data is analysed from a variety of mitochondrial and nuclear loci, including 92 mitogenomes assembled through the approach of next-generation sequencing of pooled genomic DNA. The resulting trees are used to test previous morphological- and molecular-based hypotheses of weevil relationships and classification schemes. Mitogenomic-derived trees reveal topologies that are highly congruent with previous molecular studies, but that conflict with some morphological hypotheses. Strong nodal support strengthens inferences into the relationships amongst most weevil families and suggests that the largest family, the Curculionidae, is monophyletic, if the subfamily Platypodinae is excluded. -

We performed Bayesian and Maximum Parsimony combined phylogenetic analyses with the main objective of testing higher-level relationships and the naturalness of the major Neotropical and Southern South American (Patagonia and Andes) tribes, including some members from other regions. We compiled a data matrix of 67 terminal units with 63 Entiminae species, as well as four outgroup taxa from Cyclominae, by 3522 molecular (from nuclear 18S rDNA and 28S rDNA, and mitochondrial 16S rDNA and COI gene sequences) and 70 morphological characters. The resulting trees recover a clade Entiminae with a monophyletic Cylydrorhinini and Premnotrypes branching off early. -

This is the second contribution to gain insight of the genus and assist in its systematic revision with a mitochondrial phylogenetic analysis. It centres on the Canarian clade, adding the 12S rRNA gene to the combined set of COII and 16S rRNA used in our first contribution on the Madeiran clade (here re-analysed). -

Annotated checklist of the weevils (Curculionidae sensu lato ) of North America, Central America, and the West Indies (Coleoptera: Curculionoidea) Charles W. O'Brien and Guillermo J. Wibmer INTRODUCTION This checklist treats the names of the 843 genera and 7,068 species (as well as their synonyms) currently recognized as valid that are found in the New World north of South America (except for those from Trinidad and Tobago which will be considered in a subsequent publication on South American Curculionidae sensu lato). The idea for a weevil checklist originated with Ross Arnett, Jr. as part of the North American Beetle Fauna Project. When this project was terminated in 1980, we decided to expand the scope of the checklist and publish it in an annotated form. While it owes its origin to the NABFP it is published independently of that organization. The checklists of the weevils of North America (Leng 1920, Leng and Mutchler 1927 and 1933, Blackwelder 1939, and Blackwelder and Blackwelder 1948), and of Mexico, Central America, the West Indies and South America (Blackwelder 1947) have become increasingly outdated because of numerous revisions and descriptions of new taxa. In this list we have added many new distribution records as well. We have attempted to follow the current classifications of most specialists, as published. For this reason the classification used here is not identical with that of the Coleopterorum Catalogus, the two checklists mentioned above, nor that used by Kissinger (1964). We have tried to verify all citations by checking original references and those "Not seen" are so marked in the bibliography. -

Stagno D’Alcontres, 31, 98164 Messina, Italy E-mail: [email protected] Abstract The species of the Italian endemic weevil genus, Solariola Flach, 1908 (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Entiminae), are re- vised, the genus is re-diagnosed, re-described and transferred from the tribe Otiorhynchini to Peritelini. Three new species are described: Solariola angelae n. sp. and Solariola pesarinii n. sp. from Sicily, and Solariola fraterna n. sp. from Ca- labria. Solariola hirtula (A. Solari & F. Solari, 1923) is considered a good species and not a subspecies of Solariola gestroi (A. Solari & F. Solari, 1904), bringing the total number of species considered valid to 9. All the previously described spe- cies are re-described in detail. Distribution, ecology, maps and figures are provided for all the species of the genus, as well as a species-level identification key and a checklist of all known species. (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Entiminae: Naupactini) of weevils are described from Dominican amber. The new subtribe differs from the nomi- native subtribe of the tribe Naupactini by the following combination of characters: prominent tooth on the profemur, antennae insertions in the middle of the rostrum, all tibiae with mucros, denticulate inner margins of the tibiae, apical two-thirds of the pro- tibiae widened and a very short scape.
