Dear Friends:

On behalf of the citizens of the City of Cleveland, I am pleased to welcome you to the 4th Annual Cleveland Asian Festival.

One of our community’s greatest assets is our diversity and the Cleveland Asian Festival offers us an opportunity to celebrate and enjoy Cleveland’s rich Asian heritage – including world-class musicians, dancers, performers, artists and authentic Asian food. Our vibrant and growing AsiaTown neighborhood serves as the backdrop for the event and as a stage for Cleveland’s warm hospitality and cultural diversity.

I’d like to thank you for coming to this event and experiencing Cleveland at its finest. And, I’d like to thank all of the volunteers and organizations from the Asian Pacific communities who came together to present this event, and in doing so, foster, educate, and promote Asian culture and traditions, while celebrating Cleveland.

I hope you enjoy the 4th Annual Cleveland Asian Festival. Your local utility, Cleveland Public Power Sincerely,

Annette Lawless joined the Fox 8 family as a reporter in October 2010. Born in small town of Wellington, Kan., Annette got her start to journalism when she still had baby teeth. Often, she’d dazzle her friends with elaborate stories at the elementary school lunch table. Until one day, she gabbed too much and was shamefully penalized without recess for the whole day — a true devastation for any 7-year-old. She’s still a little bitter to this day. She didn’t stop talking, however. Her skill evolved into an elaborate public speaking career in high school, nabbing more than 75 awards in speech, debate and acting. She was named one of the top public speakers in the country and soon made her move to the glitzy metropolitan of Manhattan… Kansas. Annette graduated from Kansas State University with degrees in broadcasting, print journalism and public relations. She’s since worked for ESPN and at TV stations in Topeka and Wichita, Kan. She received Kansas Association of Broadcasters awards for her work in reporting and producing. Since moving to Cleveland, she’s earned several awards with the National Press Photographer’s Association and Ohio News Photographer’s Association. She’s a proud member of Fox 8′s Emmy-award winning Friday Night Touchdown team. She’s also an Emmy-nominated producer and reporter.

Her first Cleveland stint was at WJW Channel 8, where, in 1994, she became the first Asian-American reporter at a Northeast Ohio television station. She joined Channel 19 as an anchor and reporter in 2001. Lai has received Associated Press awards for news writing and feature reporting, and, in 2004, won an Emmy for spot news reporting. Born in Chicago, Lai grew up in Louisiana. She is a graduate of Louisiana State University, where she was the recipient of the LSU Honor Scholarship and a National Merit Scholarship Award.
