Summary Argument:

Martin Dietzfelbinger and I (Christophe Paul) are currently Steering Committee co-chairs of STACS. STACS is an old conference (34th edition this year), and it is certainly one of the top European conferences covering a wide segment of theoretical computer science, including graph algorithms, parameterized complexity, automata theory and logic. Although it takes part in Germany and France alternatingly, it attracts submissions from all over Europe and also substantial numbers of submisions from North America and other countries from all over the world. It covers the areas of track A and B of ICALP (the major European conference on theoretical computer science) and it operates on the same level as ESA (which conference is focussing on algorithms, with a theory and applications track).

The workshop WG, which we also compare with, is a very good venue as

5 well, but it is focussed on the graph algorithms community. The other conference we compare with, MFCS, is a conference series that exists since 1972. It serves the theory of computer science community as a whole, at a high level, just as STACS does. (STACS in late winter, MFCS in August.)

Comparing the acceptance rates : STACS is typically below 25%, while MFCS typically larger than 30% and WG larger than 35%. So one does see that STACS is even more selective than these two ranked A conferences. Finally, looking at http://www.guide2research.com/topconf/ for h indices of conferences, we see STACS at 25, ICALP at 28, ESA at 23.
