Cardillo 1 Nick Cardillo Dr. Andes Dramatic Theory & Criticism 16 April 2019 At the Mercy of Monsters: Expressionism and Bram Stoker’s Dracula on the Stage Bram Stoker’s novel, Dracula, is today considered a cornerstone of horror fiction. From its pages sprang one of literature’s most enduring creations and today Count Dracula is known the world over as a figure of not only the printed word, but the silver screen and beyond. Count Dracula has taken on a life of his own; a character so clearly defined in the public consciousness that he is no longer tethered to the Gothic genre alone and who has become a figure of both parody and horrific reverence. Among Dracula’s many forays into mediums of visual art are several plays all of which seek to put Bram Stoker’s characters (if not his entire original story) on the stage and dramatize horror. -
Bram Stoker, Homosocial Desire and the Stokerian Biographical Project
Brno Studies in English Volume 37, No. 2, 2011 ISSN 0524-6881 DOI: 10.5817/BSE2011-2-4 Brigitte Boudreau Libidinal Life: Bram Stoker, Homosocial Desire and the Stokerian Biographical Project Abstract This paper offers an examination of the Stokerian biographical project and shows how many biographies of Bram Stoker are invested in uncovering the elu- sive relationship between this little-known author and the actor Henry Irving. An exploration of Stokerian biographies reveals how Stoker has been constructed as a man who experienced same-sex desire, as revealed through his own “autobio- graphical” texts, such as Personal Reminiscences of Henry Irving and Dracula. Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick’s concept of “homosocial desire” provides a useful theoretical framework within which to explore a sample selection of Stokerian biographies, including those of Daniel Farson, Phyllis A. Roth, Barbara Belford and Paul Murray. This paper maintains that the theories surrounding Stoker’s li- bidinal life are generally well-grounded, yet to this day several questions remain unanswered. For many biographers, the life of the author of Dracula continues to be shrouded in mystery. This is reflected in the works of Victorian author Bram Stoker, for whom adherence to tradition and fixed gender roles were of utmost importance. -

But I hope, as I write this, that you’re all well, and coping with the oddest and scariest year many of us have ever experienced. I also hope that several of the most-used ‘new’ sayings will shortly never be needed again – as in “These strange/difficult/unusual (delete where applicable) times”, “Social distancing”, “Self-isolating”, and so on. I never thought I’d become obsessed with supermarket deliveries either – how sad is that? But we soon became one of “those couples” playing a board game to stay awake past midnight, in order to secure one of the very valuable delivery slots. A good idea in theory, except Mildred Hubble (Millie) our very helpful black cat, thought it hugely entertaining to sit in the middle of the table and bat all the game tiles onto the floor. -

Intro From the earliest silent films such as Georges Méliès' The Devil's Castle (1896) to the recent Twilight adaptation, the vampire genre, like the creatures it presents, has been resurrected throughout cinematic history. More than a hundred vampire films have been produced, along with over a dozen Dracula adaptations. The Count has even appeared in films not pertaining to Bram Stoker's original novel. He has been played by the likes of Bela Lugosi, Christopher Lee (fourteen times) both John and David Carradine, and even Academy Award winner Gary Oldman. -
