  • Convents in Kraków in the 20 Th Century
PRACe GeoGRAFICzne, zeszyt 137 Instytut Geografii i Gospodarki Przestrzennej UJ Kraków 2014, 159 – 173 doi : 10.4467/20833113PG.14.014.2159 Convents in KraKów in the 20 th Century Justyna Liro Abstract : Religious orders are clearly noticeable in the geographic space of major cities in Poland. The purpose of the paper is to analyse the location factors for religious orders in Kraków, including the location of the most important houses and their related activity in the city. Religious orders have been present in Kraków since its beginnings. The paper covers convents run by the Roman Catholic Church within the borders of Kraków. The paper is focused on the 20th century when a considerable increase of the number of religious orders and general spatial development of the city was observed. The data for this paper was obtained from church and secular sources, as well as land surveys. In addition, changes in the spatial distribution of religious orders and monastic houses operating in Kraków in the 20th century as well as modifications in their functions were analysed. The largest concentration of monastic houses is Kraków’s historic core. The actual distribution of convents is a result of centuries- old traditions and depends on numerous factors such as the capital city function of Kraków in effect until the end of the 16th century and the rank of religious administration ( bishopric ). A further increase in the number of monastic houses was also due to the spatial growth of the city and the general development of monastic life. Religious orders were characterised by various endogenous and exogenous functions.

  • Visaginas, Tychy, and Nowa Huta
SLOVO, Vol. 24, No. 1 (Spring 2012), 41-57. Coping with the Unwanted Past in Planned Socialist Towns: Visaginas, Tychy, and Nowa Huta RASA BALOCKAITE Vytautas Magnus University, Lithuania The article examines three cases of planned socialist towns: Visaginas in Lithuania and Tychy and Nowa Huta in Poland. The planned socialist towns, products of the socialist urban planning, were known as the workers‟ towns in the workers‟ state and as the outposts of socialism. After the fall of their respective socialist regimes, however, it became necessary to redefine the identities of these towns in order to cope with the socialist past. While the issue of socialist heritage has been researched by scholars, this research addresses an existing gap in the theory – how socialist heritage is presently used in those planned socialist towns that have little other symbolic recourse available. This paper examines the content of various institutionally produced materials, such as websites, tourism brochures, photo albums, and guided tours. The research reveals different strategies used in planned socialist towns to redefine their identities: i) active forgetting of the socialist past; ii) commercialization of the socialist past via tourism; iii) ironic imitation of the West, vis-à-vis de–ideologized images of “green and young” towns; and iv) bifurcation of consciousness into private remembrance and public forgetting of the past. The article presents the findings of the research project, „Transformations of the Socialist Urban Utopias‟, funded by CERGE-EI (Centre for Economic Research and Graduate Education – Economics Institute) Foundation, Prague, Czech Republic. INTRODUCTION From 1917 to 1990, socialist authorities built many so-called planned socialist towns across the Eastern bloc, both in the USSR and in the satellite socialist states of Central and Eastern Europe.

„Etnografia Polska”, t. LXIII, 2019, z. 1–2 PL ISSN 0071-1861 DOI: 10.23858/EP63.2019.009 MONIKA GOLONKA-CZAJKOWSKA Institute of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology, Jagiellonian University, Kraków BETWEEN ENNOBLEMENT AND EXCLUSION: HERITAGE POLICIES IN KRAKÓW1 The global career of the notion of “heritage” as one of the central figures of social imagination is undoubtedly an offshoot of the memory boom which Sharon Macdo- nald described in the context of postwar European identity formation processes (2013, p. 3). In a world of fluid modernity (Bauman 1994) the game of “heritage” allows the participants to drop anchor, look behind, and create an impression of control over the passage of time. The imprecision of the idea is simultaneously its strength and its weakness, as is shown on the one hand by the great interest being displayed in selected elements of cultural heritage, and on the other, by the unending disputes and contro- versies over what should be the object of heritization, who is entitled to control it and on what principles. Gregory J. Ashworth and John E. Tunbridge’s lapidary definition, which is readily used in Cultural Studies, only outwardly facilitates a precise demar- cation of the concept. From the sentence “Heritage is the contemporary usage of the past and is consciously shaped from history, its survivals and memories, in response to current needs for it” (1999, p. 105) we do not learn anything about the objects of those activities. We do not know who exactly is occupied with “processing” the past, who defines the needs, and finally whose memories are subject to manipulation.

  • Contesting the Past in Nowa Huta, Poland
MODEL SOCIALIST TOWN, TWO DECADES LATER: CONTESTING THE PAST IN NOWA HUTA, POLAND (Spine title: Contesting the Past in Nowa Huta, Poland) (Thesis format: Monograph) by Kinga Pozniak Graduate Program in Anthropology A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy The School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies The University of Western Ontario London, Ontario, Canada © Kinga Pozniak 2011 THE UNIVERSITY OF WESTERN ONTARIO SCHOOL OF GRADUATE AND POSTDOCTORAL STUDIES CERTIFICATE OF EXAMINATION Supervisor Examiners ______________________________ ______________________________ Dr. Randa Farah Dr. Kim Clark ______________________________ Dr. Dan Jorgensen ______________________________ Dr. Marta Dyczok ______________________________ Dr. Tanya Richardson The thesis by Kinga Pozniak entitled: Model Socialist Town, Two Decades Later: Contesting the Past in Nowa Huta, Poland is accepted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Date__________________________ _______________________________ Chair of the Thesis Examination Board ii ABSTRACT This work examines people’s experiences of the postsocialist transformation in Poland through the lens of memory. Since socialism’s collapse over two decades ago, Poland has undergone dramatic political, economic and social changes. However, the past continues to enter into current politics, economic debates and social issues. This work examines the changes that have taken place by looking at how socialism is remembered two decades after its collapse in the Polish former “model socialist town” of Nowa Huta. It explores how ideas about the past are produced, reproduced and contested in different contexts: in Nowa Huta’s cityscape, in museums, commemorations, and the town’s steelworks (once the cornerstone of all social life in town), as well as in the personal accounts and recollections of Nowa Huta residents of different generations.

  • Is Krakow Going to Be Another Kyoto?
Translation from Polish of the article “Czy Kraków będzie drugim Kioto?” published in the Krakow edition of Gazeta Wyborcza, February 10, 2006 Footnotes have been added to the English translation Contemporary panorama of Kyoto Is Krakow going to be another Kyoto? Andrzej Jajszczyk We dreamed about the “second Japan1”, about a wonderful country from which a lot can be learned. But probably we do not want our Krakow to be another Kyoto, i.e., a city whose charm was irreversibly destroyed within last sixty years. No other city in Poland has as strong links with Japan as Krakow. Here, many years ago, Krystyna Zachwatowicz and Andrzej Wajda created the Kyoto-Krakow Foundation. Andrzej Wajda donated the money associated with his prestigious Kyoto Award to build the “Manggha” Center of Japanese Art and Technology. The beautiful building of the center was designed by Arata Isozaki, a famous Japanese architect, who matched it perfectly to the bank of the river and the view on the Debniki quarter seen from the Wawel Castle. This Japanese architect is one of those many foreign designers and artists who created their masterpieces in Krakow. The role of architects from abroad in this city cannot be overestimated. I can mention that St. Mary’s church was designed by a German from Prague, the renaissance part of Wawel was created by an Italian, St. Anne church by a Dutch architect, and the Arsenal building was adapted as Czartoryski Library by a French. Many more examples can be given. The “Manggha” center was built mainly because of the presence in our city of a magnificent collection of Japanese art collected in the second half of the 19th century by Feliks Jasienski (nicknamed “Manggha”) and then donated to the National Museum of Krakow.
