Maritzburg College Is Proud to Host the 27Th Annual Conference of the South African Society for History Teaching on 27 – 28 September 2013 SASHT Conference 2013 Maritzburg College is proud to host the 27th annual conference of the South African Society for History Teaching on 27 – 28 September 2013 Introduction The conference organisers are delighted to announce that Prof Jonathan Jansen (pictured), the much-admired Rector of the University of the Free State, has agreed to deliver the conference’s keynote address on Saturday, 28 September, on “Why the first year university students dread talking about the past – and what schools can do about it.” About the conference The South African Society for History Teaching (SASHT) is the official mouthpiece of history teachers in South Africa, especially those at secondary schools and tertiary institutions. It is anticipated that about 150 – 200 teachers and lecturers will attend the conference, many from beyond KwaZulu-Natal. Conference theme: Teaching and Learning History in a 21st Century African Classroom The sub-themes of the conference are: • Disseminating research by historians in GET, FET and HET History curricula • Disseminating indigenous knowledge/local history/regional History in the classroom for a better understanding/complementing of curriculum themes • Bridging teaching, curriculum and examination constraints • Ways of overcoming the generational disconnect • Modern media: threats and opportunities • Keeping History alive and relevant in a 21st century classroom 139 Yesterday&Today, No. 9, July 2013 SASHT Conference 2013 Overview The year 2013 marks the 150th celebration of Maritzburg College (right), KwaZulu- Natal’s oldest boys’ school. In a busy year, the school is hosting numerous sports and cultural festivals, tournaments and other events, and it is especially proud to host the 27th annual conference of the SASHT as part of those festivities.     Term 3, edition 1 2018 From the Head of School’s Desk Half term is a wonderful respite in a very busy year. While we all look forward to time away from school, we do need to take cognisance of the girls’ involvement in all school activities so far this term. There has been great excitement around our official birthday celebration and we hope you have enjoyed the video of the day. This newsletter will confirm the many highlights. I would like to comment on our “piping hot” beginning to half term. We were thrilled to officially reopen and rededicate the Epworth Chapel in January this year, especially as it is our 120th year and 60 years after the completion of the building of the Chapel. We moved the choir from the gallery to the front of the Chapel, providing a stage area for worship and performances, opened up the transepts to increase visibility and improve acoustics, and most recently, installed a new organ in such a way as to complement the original architecture of the building. This project required particular sensitivity given the place the Epworth Chapel has in the hearts of the extended Epworthian community. We are grateful to the school’s architects (Jeremy and Patrick Hathorn) for the sensitive way in which they have remodelled the space and to the contractors and cabinet makers for their superb handiwork. We are delighted with the result, and already the venue has been used for major chapel services, a number of concerts including “Singing in Time” which saw a sizeable orchestra and choir on stage, and the Prep School’s recent production of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat”.

Each reader can people the familiar places with his own contemporaries and the staff of his day. Yesterday evening, Sunday 14th May, 1995, I was roaming around the estat e. Autumn leaves carpeted the ground and the setting sun bathed the vall ey in a romantic rosy glow. I felt nostalgic. As I passed by the chapel I thought of Charles Hannah making his annual visit and hopefully 'final ' farewell sermon. None of us cared to hear for the umpteenth time the o ld man's reminiscences, including how he had walked round the Oval with Canon Todd deciding where each tree was to be planted. Passing through t he passage way, where the staff nowadays collect their post from their p igeonholes, I remember it as the entrance hall of the Rectory, and I rec all dinner parties in these rooms which are now offices, Fred and Margar et Snell our gracious hosts.

    Sport Round-Up 25 January 2020 Overview Sporting Achievements Maritzburg College’s cricket, basketball and waterpolo teams were in action this weekend with most of our fixtures being played against Kearsney at home. There were some very good results across the age groups. Our U16 basketball team played exceptionally well winning the Michaelhouse festival. Our first team cricket player, Andile Simelane, made his debut for the KZN Inland men’s cricket team over the weekend against Northwest taking 3/30. Our Director of Cricket Mr Kyle Nipper also flew the redblackwhite banner making 118 not out. College performed well on the Athletics field at the KZN 2nd league, and posted excellent results for Squash, Canoeing at the Lions River race, Swimming and Golf. Ethan Gough won the school championship played at Maritzburg Golf Course over the weekend over 36 holes. Cricket This weekend our cricketers played 20 matches, 14 of which were against Kearsney, and the RedBlackWhite teams had 8 wins, 1 draw and 5 losses. 1st team Report (Mr Robbie Coutts – 1st XI Coach) The Maritzburg College First Team Captain, Kent Goedeke, won the toss and put Kearsney in to bat in bowling friendly conditions. This was a decision that paid off almost immediately, with a wicket in the first over. The innings continued well for College with the bowling attack restricting Kearsney to 105 runs in 33 overs. This measured approach from Kearsney allowed them to keep wickets in hand and gave them the freedom to launch a more aggressive attack towards the end of the innings. It was only from over 34 overs that the Kearsney batting attack gained traction and they doubled their score in the final 12 overs, putting on another 103 runs to end on 208.

    #RED BLACK WHITE Directing potential since 1863 01/2018 From the Headmaster’s Desk Dear Parents and Guardians We are more than half way through the first term of 2018 and once again it has been a rollercoaster ride, although certainly with more highs than lows. We proudly acknowledged our class of 2017 and their superb results at the opening assembly at the start of term, and on Friday, we celebrated five staff who have given 20 years of committed and dedicated service to College. Our boys continue to excel in a myriad of activities both in and outside of the classroom; we are exceptionally blessed with the talent we have at our disposal, and the wonderfully committed staff who support them in achieving their goals. This weekend marks the end of our summer sport programme with a number of festivals for basketball and waterpolo, and at assembly on Monday we acknowledged the commitment of our top summer sportsmen, their coaches and managers. It is important to highlight that there are NO shortcuts to success on the sports field, and reaching the goals that you have set for yourself. Gary Player legendary quote is very appropriate: “The harder you work, the luckier you get.” Over the past six weeks, a number of boys have been recognised for excellence in the sports arena in various codes. These boys have all worked very hard to achieve their successes and their coaches have also spent considerable time assisting them in reaching their sporting goals. Collectively they have shown incredible passion and commitment to getting there.
