Boys: Past + Present 2019 Update Boys Who Began in 2007… Sabelo Xulu Came From: Clarence Primary, Durban (2007- Grade 6) The Frank Jackson Foundation Programme Established 2007. Boys: Past + Present 2019 Update Boys who began in 2007… Sabelo Xulu Came from: Clarence Primary, Durban (2007- Grade 6) 2018 summary… High school: Hilton College (Matriculated 2013) Lives: Cape Town Studied: UCT (Honours in Computer Science) Employment: Working full-time as a software developer (digital rental platform called ‘HouseME’ ) 2019 news… He resigned from his job at HouseME and is now working at a company called Discover Africa Group, which is a travel company. He is still working as a software developer. The company is based in Bellville, Cape Town. In a more personal capacity this year, Sabelo was part of the Cape Town Youth Choir and travelled to Greece, Italy, Austria and Turkey to perform and compete. The choir participated in two competitions, one in Karpenissi in Greece, where they won the competition outright (3 categories gold, one silver) and another in Austria, where they were placed 4th and 2nd in their prospective categories as well as winning prizes including the Audience award for best outright performance of the competition, best interpretation of a classical prescribed piece and best interpretation of a modern work. He has also since resigned from his position at Elevate, however he did have the privilege of traveling to Joburg in September to participate in an IEDT camp as an alumni (the IEDT is the trust that funded part of my Hilton fees), which was very insightful. He’s also started contributing to an IEDT Alumni Fund started and run by previous learners who are now graduates or at a university level. They're hoping to have enough in the near future to start funding learners as well! Thanduxolo Ngubane Came from: North Coast Primary (2007- Grade 5) 2018 & 2019 summary… Thando has finally been tracked down! He fondly remembered Cordwalles, having come from North Coast Primary. His dad had heard of the scholarship (it was the first year it was advertised) and he started in Grade 5, the following year. Coming to Cordwalles was a very new and daunting experience, especially in that he had to live with his granny in Pietermaritzburg for the first while. Fortunately, he moved into the boarding house towards the end of Grade 6 and really enjoyed this experience. When asked, what helped him to overcome the challenge of starting at a new school, he remembered Mr Weaver’s words on arrival, “This is a good opportunity, do as much as you can.” And so he did. He took part in djembe drumming and choir and thoroughly enjoyed learning the ‘mechanics’ of each sport on offer. From Cordwalles, he then moved on to Maritzburg College, as a boarder. At College, he captained his u14 rugby team and was vice captain in u16. He played u16A waterpolo and was in the 1st team for athletics. Added to this, he was a house leader and achieved his Academic Colours in Matric (year 2014). This then lead him on to study an Accounting degree at the University of Stellenbosch, majoring in investment accounting and economics. He graduated at the end of last year (2018) and is currently pursuing taking the CFA route (Chartered financial Analyst) and will hopefully be completing this by 2024. He is currently based in Durban. He has, coincidentally, been back to visit Cordwalles a few times in the past year, in that he has a cousin in Grade 6, at present. He could not believe that he was one of the forerunners of this programme and that a further 30 boys have/are following in his footsteps! He was thrilled to hear of all the developments within the programme, especially the support systems that have now been put in place, as he felt these were lacking a bit during his time. Siphesihle Luthuli Came from: Glenwood Prep School (2007- Grade 4) 2018 summary… High school: Michaelhouse (Matriculated 2015) Lives: Durban Studying: 2nd yr BCom. Rhodes University, Grahamstown 2019 news… Lives: Durban Studying: 3rd and final yr of his BCom. degree, Rhodes University, Grahamstown 2020 plans… Sihle is really hoping to be able to get into honours in psychology next year at Rhodes University. Boys who began in 2008… Mthobisi Cele Came from: Union Park Primary, Northdale, PMB (2008- Grade 4) 2018 summary… High school: Michaelhouse (Matriculated 2016) Lives: Pietermaritzburg Studying: 2nd yr Business Science degree at UCT 2019 news… Lives: Cape Town Studying: 3rd year Business Science at UCT 2020 plans… He has been offered a boarder master (“stooge”) position at Bishops High School while he completes his fourth and final year of his degree. He regularly meets up with Jenny Walker and has enjoyed a few dinners at her home, in Cape Town, this year! Aphiwe Mthalane Came from: Laddsworth Primary School, Hilton (2008- Grade 4) 2018 summary… High school: Michaelhouse (Matriculated 2016) Lives: Hilton Work: Took up an internship position at Cowan House Prep School whilst starting his Bachelor Degree of Education (Senior & Intermediate Phase) through Unisa. This kind of internship includes involvement in all aspects of school life: boarding, sport and the academic classes. Aphiwe thoroughly enjoyed the variety of tasks within the internship programme. 2019 news… Lives: Hilton Studying: 2nd year Bachelor of Education, Unisa Other: He has just completed a second year on the internship programme at Cowan House and the middle of the year was afforded the opportunity to take up a position of leadership within Boys Boarding as the Senior Boarder Master for the time being with a further contract on the cards. In the coming year, he hopes to add more value and represent himself as well as the school in a greater height as an Intern and as a future educator. Aphiwe has enjoyed another year of coaching sport for both boys and girls, and particularly enjoyed the ‘tea party’ that was had after the girls’ u10 soccer team tasted a winning season! He also put his name forward to manage and coach the Far North Cricket District Tema during their Midlands Trials. This was a great experience and added so much value to his coaching career. Finally, he was the star of the Pre-Primary nativity play that ended with some funky song and dance. He really enjoyed interacting with these little people who look up to him as a role model. Similarly, he has identified one or two senior staff members to be his role models for the remainder of his time at Cowan House and he looks forward to growing even more under their care. Thabani Ntombela Came from: Fundakahle Junior, Winkelspruit, South Coast, KZN (2009- Grade 4) 2018 summary… High school: Michaelhouse (Matriculated 2017) Lives: Santa Barbara, California Studying: 1st year Business & Economics at University of Westmont College, California 2019 news… Lives: Durban Studying: 2nd year Business & Economics at University of Westmont College, California Mongameli Shozi Came from: Scottburgh Primary, Scottburgh (2009- Grade 4) 2018 summary… High school: St. Albans (Matriculated 2017) Lives: Johannesburg Studying: 1st yr BCom. at University of Pretoria 2019 news… Lives: Johannesburg Studying: 2nd yr BCom. at University of Pretoria Other: Mongi has played a little bit of rugby for one of the Tuks res teams. The highlight of his year was that he was given a car by the family who are sponsoring his university degree. This has made getting around so much easier. He has also had a job coaching sport at Waterkloof House Preparatory School. 2020 plans… He will be completing his degree and hopes to find some sort of sponsorship to complete his honours in England or America. Aphiwe Majola Came from: Umbogintwini Primary, Amamzimtoti (2010- Grade 4) 2018 summary… High school: St. James Academy, Durban (Matriculated 2018) Lives: Durban 2019 news… Lives: Zululand Studying: 1st Year BCom. Accounting, University of Zululand Boys who began in 2011… Aphiwe Duma Came from: Scottsville Primary, Pietermaritzburg (2011- Grade 4) 2018 summary… High school: Maritzburg College Grade: 11 Lives: Pietermaritzburg 2019 news… Lives: Pietermaritzburg Grade: 12 Other: His highlight of the year was achieving one of his goals for high school, Academic Colours. He has also been part of an investment initiative with a few of his friends and we look forward to hearing more about this in the future. 2020 plans… He is planning to go to either the University of Pretoria or University of Johannesburg to study either supply chain management or quantity surveying. This decision is dependant on whether he can get a bursary from a company called Steinweg. If he is granted a bursary, he will study Supply Chain Management at the University of Pretoria. It was lovely to meet up with both Sandile Gombela and Aphiwe Duma at the Cordwalles Matric Reunion in October this year.     Term 3, edition 1 2018 From the Head of School’s Desk Half term is a wonderful respite in a very busy year. While we all look forward to time away from school, we do need to take cognisance of the girls’ involvement in all school activities so far this term. There has been great excitement around our official birthday celebration and we hope you have enjoyed the video of the day. This newsletter will confirm the many highlights. I would like to comment on our “piping hot” beginning to half term. We were thrilled to officially reopen and rededicate the Epworth Chapel in January this year, especially as it is our 120th year and 60 years after the completion of the building of the Chapel. We moved the choir from the gallery to the front of the Chapel, providing a stage area for worship and performances, opened up the transepts to increase visibility and improve acoustics, and most recently, installed a new organ in such a way as to complement the original architecture of the building. This project required particular sensitivity given the place the Epworth Chapel has in the hearts of the extended Epworthian community. We are grateful to the school’s architects (Jeremy and Patrick Hathorn) for the sensitive way in which they have remodelled the space and to the contractors and cabinet makers for their superb handiwork. We are delighted with the result, and already the venue has been used for major chapel services, a number of concerts including “Singing in Time” which saw a sizeable orchestra and choir on stage, and the Prep School’s recent production of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat”.

As we grow older our memories become more precious to us, and most vivi dly we recall the turbulent years of our adolescence, our hopes and fea rs, our loves and hates, our triumphs and our failures. Memories of school days at Michaelhouse are unique for each individual, b ut the photographs and stories in this book, reflecting each decade of th e school's hundred years, will, we hope, evoke for every old boy a pleasa nt feeling of nostalgia. Each reader can people the familiar places with his own contemporaries and the staff of his day. Yesterday evening, Sunday 14th May, 1995, I was roaming around the estat e. Autumn leaves carpeted the ground and the setting sun bathed the vall ey in a romantic rosy glow. I felt nostalgic. As I passed by the chapel I thought of Charles Hannah making his annual visit and hopefully 'final ' farewell sermon. None of us cared to hear for the umpteenth time the o ld man's reminiscences, including how he had walked round the Oval with Canon Todd deciding where each tree was to be planted. Passing through t he passage way, where the staff nowadays collect their post from their p igeonholes, I remember it as the entrance hall of the Rectory, and I rec all dinner parties in these rooms which are now offices, Fred and Margar et Snell our gracious hosts.

    Sport Round-Up 25 January 2020 Overview Sporting Achievements Maritzburg College’s cricket, basketball and waterpolo teams were in action this weekend with most of our fixtures being played against Kearsney at home. There were some very good results across the age groups. Our U16 basketball team played exceptionally well winning the Michaelhouse festival. Our first team cricket player, Andile Simelane, made his debut for the KZN Inland men’s cricket team over the weekend against Northwest taking 3/30. Our Director of Cricket Mr Kyle Nipper also flew the redblackwhite banner making 118 not out. College performed well on the Athletics field at the KZN 2nd league, and posted excellent results for Squash, Canoeing at the Lions River race, Swimming and Golf. Ethan Gough won the school championship played at Maritzburg Golf Course over the weekend over 36 holes. Cricket This weekend our cricketers played 20 matches, 14 of which were against Kearsney, and the RedBlackWhite teams had 8 wins, 1 draw and 5 losses. 1st team Report (Mr Robbie Coutts – 1st XI Coach) The Maritzburg College First Team Captain, Kent Goedeke, won the toss and put Kearsney in to bat in bowling friendly conditions. This was a decision that paid off almost immediately, with a wicket in the first over. The innings continued well for College with the bowling attack restricting Kearsney to 105 runs in 33 overs. This measured approach from Kearsney allowed them to keep wickets in hand and gave them the freedom to launch a more aggressive attack towards the end of the innings. It was only from over 34 overs that the Kearsney batting attack gained traction and they doubled their score in the final 12 overs, putting on another 103 runs to end on 208.

    #RED BLACK WHITE Directing potential since 1863 01/2018 From the Headmaster’s Desk Dear Parents and Guardians We are more than half way through the first term of 2018 and once again it has been a rollercoaster ride, although certainly with more highs than lows. We proudly acknowledged our class of 2017 and their superb results at the opening assembly at the start of term, and on Friday, we celebrated five staff who have given 20 years of committed and dedicated service to College. Our boys continue to excel in a myriad of activities both in and outside of the classroom; we are exceptionally blessed with the talent we have at our disposal, and the wonderfully committed staff who support them in achieving their goals. This weekend marks the end of our summer sport programme with a number of festivals for basketball and waterpolo, and at assembly on Monday we acknowledged the commitment of our top summer sportsmen, their coaches and managers. It is important to highlight that there are NO shortcuts to success on the sports field, and reaching the goals that you have set for yourself. Gary Player legendary quote is very appropriate: “The harder you work, the luckier you get.” Over the past six weeks, a number of boys have been recognised for excellence in the sports arena in various codes. These boys have all worked very hard to achieve their successes and their coaches have also spent considerable time assisting them in reaching their sporting goals. Collectively they have shown incredible passion and commitment to getting there.
