Weekly Sport Round-Up 19-21 October 2018 Maritzburg College - winning performances from our Cricketers, Canoeists, Athletes, Basketball and Waterpolo teams From Friday last week, College teams were playing cricket, water polo, squash and basketball matches against a number of other schools. In addition, our canoeists and athletes were competing in events around the country. Cricket College’s cricket fixtures on Saturday were mostly against St Charles and took place at home. Of the 13 games played against St Charles, College won 9 and lost 4. Overall we played 19 matches, winning 15 and losing 4. Standout performances came from our 1st team who beat St Charles by 29 runs, and our 2nd XI who won by 9 wickets. The 1st team made 258/5 with Dyer scoring 62, Bruyns undefeated on 67* and Todd 43. Helpmekaar were 165 all out, with good bowling figures for College; Fortmann taking 3/34 and Dyer 3/6. College won by 93 runs. Our U15A batted first scoring scored 302-6 with Delport retiring hurt on 100 not out, van Staden making 50 and Ngcobo 41. Helpmekaar reached 270/10 after 50, with Similane taking 4 for 40 from 10. College won by 31 runs Basketball College’s basketball teams played St Charles on the weekend, winning 11 of their 15 games. The 1st team played to a packed audience in our Alan Paton Indoor Sports centre and were unlucky to lose 41-44. Some of our lower teams also played against Michaelhouse and Bisley. Overall results showed College winning 13 of their 18 matches and losing 5. 1st team report - Basketball report on the match against St Charles (Jenny Orchard) Any basketball enthusiast who supported the traditional night game between Maritzburg College and St Charles would agree that this clash showcased what schools’ basketball is all about: sportsmanship, energy, skill and camaraderie. The Alan Paton Memorial Hall was packed with supporters who rooted for their school throughout the encounter. The atmosphere was electric as the match promised to be a close one. St Charles won the jump ball and also opened the scoring but it was College who maintained a narrow lead for the first two periods of play. The first half ended with College 20 – 16 ahead. It was in the third quarter that St Charles regrouped and outscored College 16 points to 7. The third quarter is what determined the final result. Brothers Scott (5th former) and Stewart Little (OC2017) won the event in a time of Squash College’s squash teams took part in the Wynberg Stayers Tournament over the weekend beating St Stithians (15-6) and St Johns (14-9) but losing to Disas and Grey PE. Rugby 7’s Our Rugby7’s U15 and U18 teams took part in the Champion of Champion’s Tournament in Pretoria, facing some tough competition. Our U18 team did well to finish in 12th place and 8th place. Waterpolo This weekend saw our water polo team take on St Charles and Thomas More in number of fixtures. Our 1st team had a great game against a combined SCC & Thomas More side winning 8-2. College won 4 of their 7 matches and lost 3 all on a stagger.
