Comic Seann Walsh Reveals His Weird & Wonderful COMIC SEANN WALSH REVEALS HIS WEIRD & WONDERFUL WORLD IN NEW TV SERIES ‘Seann Walsh World’ airs on Comedy Central from July Welcome to SEANN WALSH WORLD a brand new 13-part comedy series premiering on Comedy Central this July and starring award-winning stand-up comedian and actor Seann Walsh. Meet Seann, a young, snappily dressed joker who uses everything from sketches to viral hits to illustrate his world. Need a handy lesson in the rules of ‘Banter’? Or could your dirty talk do with a brush up? Then look no further as Seann muses and riffs on the weird and wonderful exploits thrown up by the colourful characters residing on the World Wide Web. From seafaring shenanigans involving near misses with sharks, to super scrimpers fishing flowery anniversary gifts out of bins, Seann mines the digital landscape for the chance to share comedy gold with a live studio audience. Complimenting the cliptastic mayhem each episode features original sketches and never before seen stand-up routines written and performed by Seann. Throughout the show viewers are granted access to the inner workings of a man who thinks Sir David Attenborough should give starving penguins a Twix from the catering van, rather than commenting on the circle of life... Speaking about his new venture Seann said: “We all like to share a funny video clip with our friends when the internet gifts us someone’s truly bonkers exploits and Comedy Central has given me the freedom to share some cracking clips, sketches and stand-up with the people of Britain. Now everyone will have the chance to see a man spit a banana into his dog’s mouth!” Jill Offman, MD Comedy Central UK and SVP International Content, who greenlit the project commented: “Seann Walsh is a perfect fit for Comedy Central. We are sure our audience will love his warmth, energy and irreverent humour and have high hopes for this brand new show”. An award-winning stand-up comedian (Best Newcomer Chortle Comedy Awards 2009), Seann’s recent TV appearances include: Stand Up For The Week (Channel 4) Channel 4’s Comedy Gala Live At The 02 2012, Never Mind The Buzzcocks (BBC2), Mock The Week (BBC2), 8 Out Of 10 Cats (Channel 4) and Michael McIntyre's Comedy Roadshow (BBC1). Stand-Up Comedy and Everyday Life: Post-war British Comedy and the Subversive Strain. Christopher Ritchie. Goldsmiths College, London, Ph. D Drama, 1998. - ME Ia- AM GOLDSMITHS 87 0079879 6 Abstract. This thesis "examinee,,, its to life , . stand-up comedy and relation everyday and presents a model of everyday life in the commodity society. It seeks to define stand up comedy and how it works as a performance mode and will offer a definition of the stand-up comedian. It will examine how jokes reflect opinions and attitudes within everyday life and how they can communicate negative cultural myths, stereotypes and ideologies but also reach beyond the merely absurd and comical to present authentic moments that enable us to locate the truth about ourselves. The thesis seeks to locate a stand-up comedy that enables us to understand ourselves in relation to life in the commodity society. The thesis traces a subversive lineage through post-Second World War comedy from The Goon Show through the satirists of the 1960s and Monty Pylhon's Flying Circus to Alternative Comedy and stand-up comedians in the present day. The 'Alternative Comedy moment' between 1979 and 1981 is central to the thesis as is the relation to American stand-up comedy, Punk and the rise of reactionary humour in Britain. Alternative Comedy is identified and placed in a social, political and counter-cultural context. The achievements and failures of this comedy will be discussed with particular focus on the redefinition of the role of women and sexual politics in stand-up comedy and the creation of a thriving London cabaret and comedy scene.

Raymond Campbell School of Arts and Digital Industries University of East London Title: Comic Cultures: commerce, aesthetics and the politics of stand-up performance in the UK 1979 to 1992 Thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. October 2016 Abstract This thesis represents the first Cultural Studies analysis of the 1980s entertainment form commonly known as ‘alternative comedy’, which emerged against the backdrop of social, industrial and political unrest. However, the use of the term ‘alternative comedy’ has obscured a diverse movement that contained many different strands and tendencies, which included punk poets, street performers, chansonniers and improvising double acts. This thesis goes some way to addressing the complex nature of this entertainment space by recognising the subtle but important differences between New Variety and alternative cabaret. Alternative cabaret was both a movement and an entertainment genre, while New Variety grew out of CAST’s theatre work and was constructed in opposition to Tony Allen’s and Alexei Sayle’s Alternative Cabaret performance collective. Taken together, alternative cabaret and New Variety comprise one part of the alternative space that also includes post-punk music, and were the cultural expressions of the 1980s countercultural milieu. Alternative cabaret and New Variety were the products of cultural change. Each genre has its roots in the countercultural movements of the 1960s and 1970s and it was the knowledge that agents had acquired through participation in these movements that helped to shape their political-aesthetic dispositions or their weltanschauunng. As well as political activism, rock music influenced performers and promoters and contributed much to their art.
