DOI: https://doi.org/10.31611/ch.71 Tropidophis feicki Schwartz, 1957 is restricted to densely forested limestone mesic areas in western Cuba (Schwartz & Henderson 1991; Henderson & Powell 2009). This species has been reported from about 20 localities distributed from near Guane, in Pinar del Río Province, to Ciénaga de Zapata, in Matanzas Province Rivalta et al., 2013; GBIF 2020; Fig. 1). On 30 June 2009 and on 22 December 2011 we found an adult male and an adult female Tropidophis feicki (ca. 400 mm SVL; Fig. 2), respectively, at the entrance of the “Cueva de la Virgen” hot cave (22.8201, -80.1384; 30 m a.s.l.; WGS 84; point 14 in Fig. 1). The cave is located within “Mogotes de Jumagua” Ecological Reserve, Sagua La Grande Municipality, Villa Clara Province. This locality represents the first record of this species for central Cuba, particularly for Villa Clara Province. -

Hillis* Section of Integrative Biology and Center for Computational Biology and Bioinformatics, The University of Texas at Austin, Austin, TX 78712, USA Received 4 February 2002; received in revised form 18 May 2002 Abstract Four New World genera of dwarf boas (Exiliboa, Trachyboa, Tropidophis, and Ungaliophis) have been placed by many syste- matists in a single group (traditionally called Tropidophiidae). However, the monophyly of this group has been questioned in several studies. Moreover, the overall relationships among basal snake lineages, including the placement of the dwarf boas, are poorly understood. We obtained mtDNAsequence data for 12S, 16S, and intervening tRNA–valgenes from 23 species of snakes repre- senting most major snake lineages, including all four genera of New World dwarf boas. We then examined the phylogenetic position of these species by estimating the phylogeny of the basal snakes. Our phylogenetic analysis suggests that New World dwarf boas are not monophyletic. Instead, we find Exiliboa and Ungaliophis to be most closely related to sand boas (Erycinae), boas (Boinae), and advanced snakes (Caenophidea), whereas Tropidophis and Trachyboa form an independent clade that separated relatively early in snake radiation. Our estimate of snake phylogeny differs significantly in other ways from some previous estimates of snake phy- logeny. For instance, pythons do not cluster with boas and sand boas, but instead show a strong relationship with Loxocemus and Xenopeltis. -

NUMBER 1839 AUGUST 19, 1957 A New Species of Boa (Genus Tropidophis) from Western Cuba BY ALBERT SCHWARTZ' Stull (1928), in her revision of the boas of the genus Tropidophis, recognized five forms on the island of Cuba: Tropidophis maculatus maculatus (Bibron), T. pardalis pardalis (Gundlach), T. wrighti Stull, T. melanurus melanurus (Schlegel), and T. semicinctus (Gundlach and Peters). Bailey (1937) later described two additional forms, T. nigri- ventris and T. maculatus pilsbryi. Thus, as presently understood, there are six species of the genus Tropidophis on Cuba, one of which is rep- resented by two subspecies. All the Cuban forms are not equally common or well represented in collections; wrighti, for example, is known only from the type and two additional specimens, and may thus be considered either as rare or as occurring in little-collected areas on the island. Likewise, nigriventris is known from but two specimens and T. m. pilsbryi by only three individuals. On the other hand, melanurus is a widespread form and is well represented in American collections. In the West Indies, the genus Tropidophis is best represented on the island of Cuba with seven forms. Jamaica and Hispaniola each have a single form, in both cases insular races of T. maculatus. The Isle of Pines is inhabited by three forms, currently regarded as identical with the three species occurring on Cuba, T. m. maculatus, T. p. pardalis, and T. m.. melanurus. CHARACTERIZING VERTEBRATE RHODOPSIN NATURAL VARIATION IN EVOLUTION, FUNCTION, AND DISEASE by Nihar Bhattacharya A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Cell and Systems Biology University of Toronto © Copyright by Nihar Bhattacharya (2018) CHARACTERIZING VERTEBRATE RHODOPSIN NATURAL VARIATION IN EVOLUTION, FUNCTION, AND DISEASE Nihar Bhattacharya Doctor of Philosophy Department of Cell and Systems Biology University of Toronto 2018 ABSTRACT Vertebrate dim light vision is mediated by the rod visual pigment, rhodopsin, a member of the G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) superfamily of proteins. In the dark, rhodopsin is covalently bound to a vitamin A-derived 11-cis chromophore, which acts as an inverse agonist to stabilize the inactive state of rhodopsin. When exposed to light of a maximal wavelength (λmax), the 11-cis retinal chromophore isomerizes to an all-trans conformation, initiating a series of structural shifts to the light-activated state of rhodopsin. This results in a signalling cascade within the rod photoreceptor cell and, ultimately, the perception of light. The goal of this thesis is to investigate natural variation in rhodopsin function in the context of evolutionary adaptation, chromophore usage, and disease mutations. Following a general introduction, in Chapter II, I characterize the visual system of the diurnal colubrid snake Pituophis melanoleucus using immunohistochemistry of retinal sections and spectroscopy of ii purified visual pigments expressed in vitro, revealing an unusual rhodopsin with cone opsin properties found in cone-like rod photoreceptors. In Chapter III, I investigate the effects of the rare vertebrate chromophore, 11-cis 3,4 dehydroretinal (A2), on the spectral and non- spectral properties of rhodopsin.
