National Library Warsaw 2001 National ISSN 0867-6976 Joanna Pasztaleniec-Jarzyƒska Halina Tchórzewska-Kabata Library THE NATIONAL LIBRARY IN WARSAW TRADITION AND THE PRESENT DAY Warsaw This is an entirely new publication devoted to the 2001 POLISH National Library in Warsaw, one which is both a guide-book to the Library’s present-day services and activity, as well as a concise chronicle of the 80 years of its history, and also of the many centu- ries of Polish librarianship. The National Library is presented in many aspects: as an “idea and insti- LIBRARIES tution”, as a “national bibliographic agency”, as a “research institution”, as a “library open to readers”, as a “publishing office”, and finally as Vol. 5 “an institution of national culture”. The text is accompanied by rich and attractive photographic material. Up-to-date information on the services and collections of the National Library are TODAY provided, as well as selected literature. The publication was issued both in Polish and in an English language version. MORE PRECIOUS THAN GOLD Treasures of the Polish National Library Ed. by H. Tchórzewska-Kabata, M. Dàbrowski The album presents 105 of the most beautiful and unique treasures housed in the collections of the National Library in Warsaw. All categories of collections are represented, including manuscripts, incunables, old prints, handwritten maps and atlases, printed and re- corded music as well as sound-recording equipment, drawings, early photographs, documents of social life, and much more. Among the most precious treasures we find e.g. the oldest known relic of Polish prose The Holy Cross Sermons, a priceless manu- script in Latin, Polish and German The Florian Psalter, one of the world’s earliest Old Church Slavonic manuscripts The SupraÊl Codex, the richly decorated Revelationes sanctae Birgittae, Giovanni Simonetta’s incunable La Sforziada, Ptolemy’s Geography, or Fryderyk Chopin’s Preludes. The presentation of these monuments of European letters is preceded by introductions which set the items presented against a historical and cultural background. The whole volume is a poignant testimony both to the losses and the wealth of Polish culture. The publication was issued both in Polish and in an English language version. • “He Was One of Us” – Joseph Conrad As a Home Army Author
Yearbook of Conrad Studies (Poland) Vol. 13 2018, pp. 17–29 doi: 0.4467/20843941YC.18.002.11237 “HE WAS ONE OF US” – JOSEPH CONRAD AS A HOME ARMY AUTHOR Stefan Zabierowski The University of Silesia, Katowice Abstract: The aim of this article is to show how Conrad’s fiction (and above all the novelLord Jim) influenced the formation of the ethical attitudes and standards of the members of the Polish Home Army, which was the largest underground army in Nazi-occupied Europe. The core of this army was largely made up of young people who had been born around the year 1920 (i.e. after Poland had regained her independence in 1918) and who had had the opportunity to become acquainted with Conrad’s books during the interwar years. During the wartime occupation, Conrad became the fa- vourite author of those who were actively engaged in fighting the Nazi regime, familiarizing young conspirators with the ethics of honour—the conviction that fighting in a just cause was a reward in itself, regardless of the outcome. The views of this generation of soldiers have been recorded by the writers who were among them: Jan Józef Szczepański, Andrzej Braun and Leszek Prorok. Keywords: Joseph Conrad, World War II, Poland, Polish Home Army, Home Army, Warsaw Uprising 1 In order to fully understand the extraordinary role that Joseph Conrad’s novels played in forming the ethical attitudes and standards of those Poles who fought in the Home Army—which was the largest underground resistance army in Nazi-occupied Europe—we must go back to the interwar years, during which most of the members of the generation that was to form the core of the Home Army were born, for it was then that their personalities were formed and—perhaps above all—it was then that they acquired the particular ethos that they had in common.

LEAF. Linking and Exploring Authority Files (www.leaf-eu.org) Jutta Weber Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin - Preußischer Kulturbesitz The project LEAF is funded by the EU under the 5th framework (IST program). It started in March 2001 and will run for three years. The scope of LEAF reflects the new role which authority data get in libraries, archives and museums: Their internal use in the cataloguing process, the authority control which is needed when authority data originating from different sources are used in a distributed retrieval process and the access control which in fact is dependent from the quality of authority data: All this can be summed up under the question: How can millions of existing authority data originating from very different sources be used together by everybody (librarian, archivist, museologist, public user) in a way that there will be no loss of information, no data accumulation without quality check but an automated linking between high quality information driven by actual user needs? LEAF will try to enhance search and retrieval facilities by providing high quality access to authority information for everybody. For this purpose LEAF is developing a model architecture for collecting, harvesting, linking and providing access to existing name authority information, independent from their creation in libraries, archives or museums and independent from national differences. The scenario will be build using authority files about person names and is integrating the user directly into the establishing of a Central European

Memory of the World International Register Collections of the 19th century of the Polish Historical and Literary Society / Polish Library in Paris / Adam Mickiewicz Museum (Poland) 2012-26 1.0 Summary (max 200 words) The Polish Library in Paris (Bibliothèque Polonaise de Paris—BPP) was created in 1838 by Polish political émigrés who had found shelter in the French capital. This is where they could carry on various actions aiming at gaining back the independence of the State which had been lost at the end of the 18th century. Led by the wave of ideologies linked to independence and people’s freedom movements arisen in Europe in the early 19th century, it was established as a peaceful form aiming at fighting for freedom and independence. In the 19th century, Europe built places of memory such as libraries and archives in the independence States. At that time, the BPP acted as a means of substitution and continuity of the institutions destroyed by the foreign forces occupying the Polish territories. It came to birth thanks to the efforts carried out by the émigrés and the support of European intellectual elites as well as the authorities of the French State. The latter felt involved in the idea originating the creation of the BPP and they supported the action of a nation whose fight for independence, during the Uprising of 1831, had moved many European nations, aroused their admiration and strengthened their own aspirations for independence. The Polish Library gathered the scattered sources which enabled to document the history of Poland, along with the publications carried out by the emigration.

Yearbook of Conrad Studies (Poland) Vol. IX 2014, pp. 7–22 doi:10.4467/20843941YC.14.001.3073 CONRAD AND PIŁSUDSKI Stefan Zabierowski The University of Silesia, Katowice Abstract: Although there would seem to be no apparent link between the English novelist Joseph Conrad and Marshal Józef Piłsudski, who restored the Polish State after World War I, they did in fact have much in common. Both hailed from the Polish eastern borderlands and both came from patriotic noble families. Both had been nurtured on the Polish Romantic poets – and Słowacki in particular. For both of them the failure of the 1863 January Uprising was a traumatic experience and both of them suffered exile in Russia. However, whereas Conrad did not believe that Poland would ever be able to regain her independence, Piłsudski led a successful armed struggle for the Polish cause, thus earning the writer’s unstinting admiration. Piłsudski for his part took pleasure in reading Conrad’s Lord Jim. Keywords: Polish eastern borderlands, Conrad, Piłsudski, January Uprising, 1863 Uprising, Polish independence. The idea of linking these two names would at fi rst sight appear to be rather far- fetched. Could there have been any real connection between one of the greatest English novelists of the twentieth century and one of the main architects of the resto- ration of the State of Poland in 1918? Could the brilliant amateur military command- er who masterminded the Bezdany mail train robbery of 1908 have had anything in common with the elegant English gentleman who penned The Secret Agent and Under Western Eyes? In actual fact, the differences were far fewer than the similarities and a closer ex- amination of the latter can only enrich our understanding of these two exceptional people.
