PAS Can Stop Dreaming About S'wak, Says PBB Malaysiakini.Com January 14, 2011 PAS can stop dreaming about S'wak, says PBB Malaysiakini.com January 14, 2011 Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) is confident that opposition party PAS will fail in its attempt to make inroads to Sarawak politics in the coming state election. PBB vice-president Daud Abdul Rahman is confident the party still enjoyed the strong support of Muslim-majority seats in Sarawak despite claims by the opposition party it had a strong chance of capturing state seats due to the alleged growing resentment of Muslim voters against PBB. "Based on the large presence of Muslims at government functions, as well as the feedback received, we are confident the party will remain relevant to this group," he said. Daud was speaking to reporters after attending the presentation of RM336,160 in business tithes from Bernas to the Tabung Baitulmal Sarawak (TBS) in Kuching today. Bernas board of directors member Azizan Ayob presented the mock cheque to Chief Minister Abdul Taib Mahmud at the former's office. PAS eyeing Malay-majority seats Daud, who is also assistant minister in the Chief Minister's Office (Islamic Affairs) said voters in Sarawak were mature in their decision, in the event of an election. It was reported that PAS was eyeing Malay-majority seats in coastal areas in the state, and mulling over whether to contest six state seats. Of the six, the opposition party claimed it could win in the fisheries villages of Sadong Jaya, Beting Maro and Sebuyau in the state election which is expected to be held in the second quarter of the year. PBB has won all 35 seats, including 27 Malay-majority seats in the May 2006 state election, Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) won 11, while Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) and Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP) have eight seats each. Sarawak BN won 62 of the 71 contested seats in the 2006 election. - Bernama Copyright © 1999-2007 Mkini Dotcom Sdn. Bhd. Source : http://www.malaysiakini.com/news/153427.

Kajian Malaysia, Vol. 29, No. 1, 2011, 29–46 KELAS MENENGAH, UMNO DAN INTELIGENSIA: TENTANGAN DOMINASI POLITIK BUMIPUTERA ISLAM DI SARAWAK MIDDLE CLASS, UMNO AND INTELLIGENTSIA: CONTESTING THE MUSLIM BUMIPUTERA'S POLITICAL DOMINATION IN SARAWAK Faisal S. Hazis Fakulti Sains Sosial, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak, Sarawak Email: [email protected] Barisan Nasional mulai mendominasi politik Sarawak setelah pemimpin bumiputera Islam mengambil alih tampuk pemerintahan negeri daripada pemimpin Iban selepas pilihan raya 1970. Kata kunci: bumiputera Islam, dominasi politik, inteligensia, politik Sarawak, tentangan The ruling Barisan Nasional started to dominate Sarawak politics after the Muslim bumiputera took over the state leadership from the Iban after the 1970 elections. Under the stewardship of the Muslim bumiputera, Barisan Nasional had successfully dominated every state and parliamentary elections held since 1970 to 2008.

  • Impressive Results Await BN in Sarawak State Elections
ISSUE: 2016 NO. 20 ISSN 2335-6677 RESEARCHERS AT ISEAS – YUSOF ISHAK INSTITUTE SHARE THEIR UNDERSTANDING OF CURRENT EVENTS Singapore | 3 May 2016 Impressive Results Await BN in Sarawak State Elections By Lee Hock Guan* EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The Sarawak state elections will be won by the Barisan Nasional. The question is really, by how much. Taib Mahmud’s successor as chief minister, Adenan Satem, has through various measures taken over the last two years, increased his personal popularity and the popularity of his party tremendously. While there have been disagreements within both the coalitions – Barisan Nasional (BN) and Pakatan Harapan (PH) – those within PH are most serious, and damage the credibility of its component parties even at the federal level. This may affect voter support in the general elections to be held within two years. As the situation now stands, the opposition parties have lost the initiative that they had in 2011, and are basically carrying out damage control measures. Retaining the same number of seats they won in 2011 will be their most realistic strategy. * Lee Hock Guan is ISEAS Senior Fellow and co-coordinator of the Institute’s Malaysia Studies Programme 1 ISSUE: 2016 NO. 20 ISSN 2335-6677 ETHNIC POLITICS WITHOUT UMNO Much of what lies behind Sarawak’s political conditioning is in the fact that the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO), Malaysia’s federally dominant party, has never established itself in this East Malaysian state where Malay voters constitute a minority. Instead, UMNO, through the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition model in which it is the decisive voice, has strategically formed political pacts with parties representing Sarawak’s Muslim bumiputras, Christian bumiputra minorities and Chinese.

Eighteen surface sediments and five core samples were collected in replicates from six sampling sites along River Sadong, Sarawak, Malaysia. The main aim of this study is to describe the geomorphology and sedimentological characteristics of the river sediments. This was achieved by the study of the processes that form the sediments and influence their physical and chemical characteristics. The sediments were analyzed for their sedimentological char- acteristics. The results indicated that the studied area is enriched with organic matter, and there are no sedimentary structures in its vicinity.
