I must thank everyone who has responded with “YES” to the This quarter the Spotlight is on the GDPR form and if you haven’t then please do so ASAP. th “ Eversley Choral Union/ Choir ” This issue is an update rather than a full issue and brings you up to date as at 7 of August2018. I am requesting that you advise me of any new concerts/events for the new issue going out at the end of this month - to be issued 1 st of Sept e mber 2018. Thanks. I have included some details from summer series in particular the Lakes Summer Music Festival from the 28 th of July to the 10 th of August ; also, Kendal Mid - Day Concert Club. Basic information for the Keldwith Awards are shown for preliminary and finals. I would like to thank all the chairmen, secretaries and publicity officers , who contribute to the content of the B.a.c.l. and ma k e it a success, as reports back from the groups indica te . I am looking for some volunteer choir /orchestras’, for the “Spotlight” if the secretaries or publicity officer s would take notice especially if you r organization has n’t appeared in these page s before . I have included at the end of this issue of “Spotlight”, the organizations agreeing to be included late r this year – the first time ever! If you have any events, or, special concerts that you might like to have highlighted, then you know where I am. We sing a wide range of music, religious and secular, ancient and modern, and normally hold 3 concerts a year; our Spring concert is usually a substantial work with professional soloists and orchestral accompaniment. We believe in Confirm ed Dates for 201 8 /9 encouraging young musicians and young singers and have collaborated with several youth groups in re cent years. A review of this concert said, “The choir was Brahms. superb, as if singing for their very lives: excellent diction of t he Latin text, disciplined phrasing and holding the moment between sections quite beautifully. Quiet moments built up to powerful and very moving crescendos.” Our 02.08.18 LDSM 12:00 Noon Kirby Lonsdale Parish Church major work for this year is St Matthew Passion by J . S . The history of Eversley Choir goes back to the year 1900 when a number of smaller village choirs were amalgamated in order to compete more effectively in what later became the MaryWakefield Festival. Bowness Wakefield's sister, Agnes, who was married to Tom Argles and who lived in a large house in Leasgill called 'Eversley'.     Reconstructing the layout of the Town Fields of Lancaster Mike Derbyshire Although the Borough of Lancaster is known historically as an administrative and commercial centre, for much of its history agriculture dominated the town’s economy. In addition to providing the services associated with a market town, it did itself constitute a significant farming community. The purpose of the present paper is to examine the extent to which it is possible to reconstruct the layout of the town fields, in particular during the seventeenth century, and to locate fields mentioned in documents of that period. Lancaster is not a promising township in which to undertake an exercise of this kind. There is no map, such as a Tithe Map, showing field names in the township at a later date, which can be used as a basis for identifying the sites of fields mentioned in seventeenth century documents. The first objective was therefore to construct such a map as far as this is practicable, principally on the basis of nineteenth century sources. A preliminary task in preparing this map was the construction of an outline of field boundaries for recording the field names from nineteenth century sources (and also for presenting the information on field names from the seventeenth century). The most useful outline of field boundaries is provided by the Corn Rent plan of 1833. Although this does not provide field names, as do conventional Tithe Award plans, it does provide field boundaries at a date prior to the construction of the railways.1 Copies were scanned into a computer for manipulation, including the deletion of glebe land and the marsh, the deletion of areas of the moor shown as unenclosed or having the appearance of recent encroachments on Yates’s map of Lancashire of 17862 and the reconstruction of the field pattern prior to the building of the Lancaster canal.

There have, not unexpectedly, been considerable archival losses too, as some later vacancy inventories at York make clear: the Durham sede vacante register of Alexander Neville (1381) and accompanying visitation records; the York sede vacante register after Neville’s own translation in 1388; the register of Thomas Arundel (only the register of his vicars-general survives today), and the register of Robert Waldby (likewise only his vicar-general’s register is now extant) have all long disappeared.1 Some of these would also have included records of ordinations, now missing from the chronological sequence.

    RICHARD BURTON, VICAR OF LANCASTER, 1466-84 'T'HE roll which is now catalogued as DDC1 1053 in the Lanca- _L shire Record Office enables us to trace in fair detail the career of Richard Burton, who was connected with some of the great men and institutions of the first half of the fifteenth century before he retired in 1466 to an uneventful old age as vicar of Lancaster. He seems to have been a man of mediocre talents since, despite his opportunities and connections and his obvious interest in worldly success, he never obtained any higher preferment. The document is a parchment roll approximately 100" by 10", a handy size for him to carry about for reference. It came into the Lancashire Record Office among the Clifton muniments, but there seems to be no reason other than accident to explain how it came to be included in the collection. (1) The notes, written in a fifteenth century hand and now partly illegible at the head of the roll, cover the whole of the parchment except for a gap of nineteen inches between the last document on the verso and a horoscope of the compiler near the bottom of the sheet. Apart from a copy of the grant of Hinton manor, Cambridge, to the abbess of Syon Abbey, the verso is purely a legal formulary, giving specimens of different types of land leases which would be of use to a bailiff. The specimens chosen refer to the manor of Burton, Buckingham­ shire, but are undated though they give the names of the con­ tracting parties.
