Swami Prabuddhanandaji and myself met for the first time at the Belur Math in the year 1956 where both of us had come to receive our Brahmacharya-diksha—he from Bangalore and me from Bombay. Since then we had close connection with each other. We met again at the Belur Math in the year 1960 where we came for our Sannyasa-diksha from Most Revered Swami Sankaranandaji Maharaj. I admired his balanced approach to everything that had kept the San Francisco centre vibrant. In 2000 A.D. he had invited me to San Francisco to attend the Centenary Celebrations of the San Francisco centre. He took me also to Olema and other retreats on the occasion. Once he came just on a visit to meet the old Swami at the Belur Math. In sum, Swami Prabuddhanandaji was an asset to our Order, and his leaving us is a great loss.

Jan 28, 2010 01/10. by Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, A. C., 1896-1977. Thoughts on the Gita delves into Sri Krishna's discourse to Arjuna from the psychological point of view, to find solutions to the dilemmas and mental struggles one faces in everyday life. The author. Dr Rishi Vivekananda. a practising psychiatrist and yoga teacher for over forty years. uses the wisdom gleaned from his chosen path in life to reveal an insightful understanding of the Gita and its relevance to every individual. Written in an easy style full of humour, thoughts on the Gita takes one closer to understanding oneâ™s mind and oneâ™s place in the world. About the Author. Dr Rishi Vivekananda (Dr Brian Thomson, MBBS [Syd], MANZCP, OPM) has been a physician for over 45 years, and a consultant psychiatrist for over 40 years. Thoughts on the gita. During his sojourn in Calcutta in 1897, Swami Vivekananda used to stay for the most part at the Math, the headquarters of the Ramakrisnna Mission, located then at Alambazar. During this time several young men, who had been preparing themselves for some time previously, gathered round him and took the vows of Brahmacharya and Sannyâsa, and Swamiji began to train them for future work, by holding classes on the Gitâ and Vedanta, and initiating them into the practices of meditation.

  • July - August 2016
390 JULY - AUGUST 2016 Guru and God Swami Ramakrishnananda Swami Ramakrishnananda Swami Yatiswarananda Divine Wisdom In criticizing another, we always foolishly take one especially brilliant point as the whole of our life and compare that with the dark ones in the life of another. Thus we make mistakes in judging individuals. A yogi must not think of injuring anyone by thought, word, or deed. Mercy shall not be for men alone, but shall go beyond, and embrace the whole world. Never talk about the faults of others, no matter how bad they may be. Nothing is ever gained by that. You never help one by talking about his fault; you do him an injury, and injure yourself as well. Bless men when they revile you. Think how much good they are doing by helping to stamp out the false ego. Hold fast to the real Self, think only pure thoughts, and you will accomplish more than a regiment of mere preachers. Out of purity and silence comes the word of power. Blame neither man, nor God, nor anyone in the world. When you find yourselves suffering, blame yourselves, and try to do better. You must not criticize others; you must criticize yourself. If you see a drunkard, do not criticize him; remember he is you in another shape. He who has not darkness sees no darkness in others. What you have inside you is that which you see in others. This is the surest way of reform. If the would-be reformers who criticize and see evil would themselves stop creating evil, the world would be better.

Handsome, brilliant in studies, an image of contained strength, a lover of music and poetry . yet deep inside Narendra the seed of search had begun to sprout at an early age. Unable to understand the superstition-ridden rituals of the Hindu religion and desiring to know about the originating source of his great Hindu heritage, Narendra’s search ended when he finally met his guru, Sri Ramakrishna. Swami Vivekananda’s brilliant speech at the Parliament of Religions held in Chicago in 1893 brought him fame in India and abroad. In a short life span of thirty-nine years, he propagated the rich Hindu spiritual culture in India and abroad and brought about an awakening among the people of his country. He organised the Ramakrishna Order of Monks that works tirelessly for the uplift of mankind. Swami Vivekananda’s inspirational writings, speeches, and vision remain relevant even today and will continue to inspire future generations for all times. About the Author Dr. Prema Nandakumar obtained her Ph.D. in 1961 for her study of Sri Aurobindo’s epic poem “Savitri”. Since then, she has been an independent researcher, publishing critical and biographical works.
