Pick up this album, stick it in your player, and step back. You’re about to be surprised. From the opening strains of “Black As …” to the point around forty minutes later when “Slipper” clos- es out the album with one of the more restrained vocal and musical perfor- mances, you’re hearing what turns out to be a surprisingly complete album. An interesting thing to note, howev- er, is that the lyrics that propel the album, most of which are penned by Carrie Conley (“because no one else wants to,” she says semi-jokingly on the band’s website) are not your average lyrics. Many of the songs, including “Bank of America” and “Holly” to name a few, are taken almost straight from the headlines. When you walk into the White River Landing, one of Muncie’s most whimsical restaurants, be prepared to spend some time there. Not only does the cozy and casual environment lend itself to leisurely dining, but everything on the menu and the spirits list sounds so delicious a silence may fall over your table for a good five to 15 minutes while you decide what you’re craving. Located on the outskirts of downtown, White River Landing attracts students and families with its afford- able menu and outdoorsy theme. The menu features a wide range of appetizers, salads, steaks, sandwiches and desserts, as well as complimentary popcorn while you wait for a table. I tried the Alley Cat Sandwich which turned out to be a glorified tuna melt flattened between two pieces of bread. I opted for the fries instead of the chips and enjoyed a simple, but delicious, meal. White River Landing also features drink specials: $2 pints on Thursdays, $8 buckets of Bud or Bud Lite on Fridays and Red Hook ESB buckets for $11 on Saturdays. Bottled beers and wine are also available. With plans to open a gift shop and a new waiting area, White River Landing shows the ever-present chain restaurants that independently-owned venues can be equally successful in Muncie. Although the gift shop is not open yet, t-shirts, glasses and gift cards are avail- able for purchase. NEW RELEASE : ‘’ Cutting to the chase, Death Cab for Cutie’s “Transatlanticism” is nice and pretty, almost to a fault. It’s harmless. The record, by all sounds and appearances, is a sensitive indie kid’s dream. The album’s liner notes include interesting, visually stunning artwork; the song titles are cute and obscure. Lead singer and guitarist Benjamin ★★★★ Gibbard’s lyrics are, when they work best, out of five actual poetry. The album is remarkably cohesive; unfortunately, the songs end up blending together slightly — but “Transatlanticism” is more than mere background music. “Death of an Interior Decorator” displays sublime harmonies. “The Sound of Settling,” obviously enough, evokes the gentle voices of Simon and Garfunkel in its melodic chorus. Still, though “Transatlanticism” is a charming record, it doesn’t create the kind of insanity that forces you to burn copies for all your friends. But, at the same time, it would perfectly complement a lazy weekend afternoon. The record is a bit sentimental; it’s a bit wimpy. But when you don’t mind feeling sorry for yourself, “Transatlanticism” is great to use as a soundtrack. ~ Allyn West
