2012-13 Athletics Review Cover.Psd 2012-13 UNCW Athletics Review In a year that started with the women’s soccer team’s methodical march to the CAA fi nals and ended with a rare triple play by the baseball squad in the NCAA Regionals, the 2012-13 season featured many memorable moments. The soccer programs kicked of the year on a positive note as both teams enjoyed strong seasons. Coach Aidan Heaney’s men defeated national power Duke in late September and qualifi ed for the CAA Tournament behind All-Conference striker Jamie Dell. Coach Paul Cairney’s women, meanwhile, developed into the nation’s most improved team and advanced to the CAA championship game behind veterans Kim Currie and Stephanie Rose. The men’s swimming and diving dynasty continued when Dave Allen’s team cruised again at the CAA Championships for its 12th consecutive title. The young Seahawks collected 19 medals and won seven conference titles in a dominating performance in Fairfax, Va. Swimmer Carly Tanner became one of the top stories of the year when the senior won three CAA crowns and became only the second Seahawk woman to qualify for the NCAA Championships. She competed in three events at the nationals in Indianapolis, Ind. The men’s basketball team fi nished ninth in the conference standings, but senior forward Keith Rendle- man did not disappoint. A double-double marchine, the talented forward broke Brian Rowsom’s longtime rebounding record and wound up his career as one of the top performers in UNCW and CAA history, fi nishing with 1,516 points and 1,055 rebounds. The women’s basketball team opened its fi rst campaign under new skipper Adell Harris and battled hard against a diffi cult schedule. The Seahawks threw a scare into heavy favorite Delaware in the CAA quarterfi nals before bowing out at the Show Place Arena in Owings Mills, Md. The tennis teams continued their upward trajectory in the spring under veteran Mait DuBois and fi rst- year coach Evan Clark. The men’s team racked up several “fi rsts” in a history-making campaign that saw that Seahawks cap- ture their third CAA title and advance to the NCAA Regionals for the fourth time in fi ve seasons. Led by CAA Player-of-the-Year Rafael Aita and the senior doubles tandem of Kosta Blank and Chris Cooprider, the Seahawks stunned No. 18 South Carolina in the fi rst match of the NCAA Regionals and fi nished the year ranked No. 43 by the ITA. Clark’s women also played well in the spring and reached the CAA championship match for the fi rst time behind CAA First-Teamer Angie Sekely. The golf programs were solid once again as Matt Clark’s men won its third consecutive conference title and Cindy Ho’s thin team came up just shy of another league win. CAA Player-of-the-Year Payne McLeod won medalist honors to spearhead the golf team to the CAA hardware at St. James Plantation. The Seahawks went on to compete in the NCAA Regionals at The Blessings in Fayetteville, Ark. Junior Lori Beth Adams earned an at-large entry to the NCAA Central Regionals in Norman, Okla., and just missed the cut for the NCAA fi nals at OU’s Jimmy Austin Golf Course. The track and fi eld teams once again sent four student-athletes to the NCAA East Regionals, headlined by two-time CAA champion Aerial Chatman. UNCW also featured the fastest duo in the CAA in 100 Meter champions Jeremy Johnson and Maleena Reid. Coach Mark Scalf’s baseball team was chosen to win the CAA regular season crown and the Sea- hawks delivered by winning 38 games and earning the school’s sixth trip to the NCAA Regionals in the last 10 seasons. Junior southpaw Mat Batts became the school’s fi rst CAA Pitcher-of-the-Year honoree and senior second baseman Michael Bass was a Third-Team Louisville Slugger All-America selection. The 2012-13 season was another strong one academically for the Seahawks, who own a cumulative team grade point average of at 3.1194. Moreover, the women’s soccer, men’s cross country and women’s cross country teams were recognized by their respective governing bodies for their work in the class- room. In addition, the women’s soccer team was bestowed the CAA’s John Randolph Inspiration Award after befriending young cancer patient Baylee Atkins of nearby Jacksonville, N.C. 2012-13 Sport Summaries Baseball The Seahawks fi nished with a 38-23 overall record, captured the CAA regular season title with an 18-8 mark and earned a berth in the NCAA Regionals. The NCAA berth was the teams sixth since 2003 and the third at-large entry for the team. Coach Mark Scalf’s club remained the only team in CAA history to reach the CAA Tournament each year in its 28 years of existence. The Seahawks placed eight players on the All-CAA team, including Michael Bass, Mat Batts, Ryan LaGrange and Kelly Secrest on the fi rst unit. Terence Connelly, Corey Dick, Luke Dunlap and Jordan Ramsey also made the Third-Team. Junior southpaw Mat Batts became the fi rst pitcher in the program’s history to earn CAA Pitcher-of-the- Year honors after posting a 9-3 record and 2.59 ERA during the regular season. Head Coach Mark Scalf shared CAA Coach-of-the-Year honors with William & Mary’s Jamie Pinzino, giving the veteran coach six of the awards and tying him for the most by a league coach. Senior fi rst baseman Hunter Ridge set the career hits record with 277 hits in four seasons. Senior second baseman Michael Bass, who tied the school record with a 26-game hitting streak during the season, was voted Third-Team All-America by Louisville Slugger. Senior Michael Bass and sophomore Ryan LaGrange were named Capital One Second-Team Academic All-America ®, becoming the fi rst Seahawks to earn the honor since 1987. Michael Bass, Ryan LaGrange and Mat Batts were each named to the American Baseball Coaches Association All-East Region Team. Michael Bass was named Second-Team All-America by Baseball America. Michael Bass was selected Third-Team All-America by the National College Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA). The team entered the national rankings for the fi rst time since 2009 and climbed to as high as No. 21 in the Baseball America poll. Head Coach Mark Scalf picked up his 700th collegiate victory with a 7-3 triumph over Elon on March 12, 2013, at Brooks Field. The baseball team earned its fi rst Public Recognition Award from NCAA by fi nishing among the top 10 percent nationally with a perfect 1,000 score on the multi-year APR score. Mark Scalf became the all-time winningest coach in CAA baseball history with 298 victories. Justin Livengood (10th Round) and Michael Bass (27th Round) were selected by the San Diego Padres in the Major League Baseball draft. Men’s Basketball In their third season under new coach Buzz Peterson, the Seahawks fi nished with a 10-20 overall record and a 5-13 mark in the Colonial Athletic Association. UNCW wound up in ninth place in the CAA standings after being picked to fi nish last in the league. The Seahawks won the Wilmington Division of the Nations of Coaches Classic and knocked off fi rst- place Northeastern on Homecoming. Junior forward Keith Rendleman was named First-Team All-CAA, All-CAA Defense, First-Team NABC District 10 and Mid-Major All-America. Junior forward Shane Reybold was named to the CAA’s All-Academic First-Team and junior guard Tanner Milson collected All-Academic Second-Team honors. The Seahawks played seven opponents who earned post-season berths in 2012-13 Keith Rendleman set seven school records and fi nished his career fi rst in career rebounding and fourth in scoring. Keith Rendleman was named First-Team All-State by the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association. Team Awards: Coach’s Award: Dylan Sherwood; Most Improved Player: Freddie Jackson; Most Valuable Player: Keith Rendleman Women’s Basketball In Adell Harris’ inaugural season on the bench, the Seahawks closed with a 5-26 record and 4-16 mark in the CAA. The Seahawks defeated George Mason in the fi rst round of the CAA Tournament before battling top- seeded Delaware closs in a narrow loss in the quarterfi nals. Senior Karneshia Garrett was voted Third-Team All-CAA. Senior Chelsea McGowen and junior Diana Venezia were selected to the Honorable Mention All-CAA Academic Team. Sophomore playmaker Kelva Atkins earned All-CAA Tournament honors. Karneshia Garrett was named Second-Team All-State by the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association. Junior John Riemer was UNCW’s top fi nisher at the CAA Championships in Williamsburg, Va, covering the 8K course in 26:17 for 25th place out of 45 entries overall. The team fi nished second in the Seahawk Invitational and Coastal Carolina Invitational. John Riemer paced the squad in fi ve of seven races on the season. • 2019 Annual Report
2019 Annual Report Dear Pitch In For Baseball & Softball family, As we reflect on another year, we can’t help but feel grateful for your continued support. Pitch In For Baseball & Softball believes that baseball and softball are more than just games— they have the power to change lives. It is the generosity of the community, donors, and partners who support PIFBS that enables us to change the lives of children through baseball and softball. In 2019, PIFBS had the honor of continuing our work with industry leaders (MLB, Little League, Wilson Sporting Goods), MLB club teams (Reds, Twins, Dodgers, Mets, Yankees), organizations, and foundations who care about spreading the joy of baseball and softball to kids in underserved communities. One of our existing partners, the Tull Family Foundation, teamed up with a first-time partner of ours, the Pirates, to bring baseball and softball to kids in Pittsburgh. PIFBS also worked with the A’s to get equipment to kids in Oakland and we returned to Puerto Rico to continue our disaster relief efforts with partners Rushmore Loan Management and Auction.com. As an organization, we have undergone a leadership change, promoting a new CEO and hiring two new employees in 2019. We are supported by kids, leagues, and companies across the country who care deeply about spreading the joy of baseball and softball and conduct equipment collections and fundraisers on our behalf. Collected equipment is given new life in the hands of a child who has never had their own glove before. Kids from as far away as Arizona choose PIFBS as their charitable partner so they can help other kids play ball just like they do.

  • HISTORY NASHVILLE BASEBALL HISTORY the 2019 Season Signifies the 42Nd Season for the Nashville Sounds
HISTORY NASHVILLE BASEBALL HISTORY The 2019 season signifies the 42nd season for the Nashville Sounds. It’s the 22nd season as a member of the 16- team Pacific Coast League, and the first as the Triple-A affiliate of the Texas Rangers. Despite the 42nd season as the Nashville Sounds, baseball’s roots in Nashville go back to the 19th Century. In fact, baseball has been played in Middle Tennessee since at least 1860, when the Republican Banner newspaper published a July 25th report on the game’s popularity the previous fall. During the Civil War, Union soldiers temporarily based here helped spread the game in the local community. Home field was a place known as the Sulphur Springs Bottom, a half-mile north of today’s state capitol. When the original Southern League was organized in 1885, Nashville was a charter city and games were played at Nashville’s Athletic Park, as the Sulphur Springs Bottom location came to be known. The city fielded several entries in the league over the next ten years -- the Americans (1885-86), the Blues (1887), the Tigers (1893-94), and the Seraphs (1895) -- but was unable to claim a pennant. When the Southern Association was formed in 1901, Athletic Park – which was later given the name Sulphur Dell by famed sportswriter Grantland Rice -- became the permanent home to the Nashville Volun- teers (or Vols, for short), who played there for the next 61 years. Under the guidance of manager Newt Fisher, the Nashville club won the SA’s first two pennants. The team, which was not known as the Vols until a “name the team” contest conducted prior to the 1908 season, continued to build a solid, loyal fan base.
