WHY TINCAPS?

Professional and semi-pro baseball teams in Fort Wayne have carried dozens of names through the years. Some notable names include:  Kekiongas: Named after Chief Little Turtle’s settlement in what became Fort Wayne  Generals: Named after General Anthony Wayne, after whom the city is named  Voltmen: Named because the team’s sponsor was General Electric

With Parkview Field opening in 2009, the Fort Wayne Wizards looked to change the team name with the help of suggestions from the Fort Wayne community. The team searched for a new identity that had its roots in the Fort Wayne community, would appeal to a wide audience and was unique in the crowded national sports landscape. It received 2,574 entries in a few weeks and, after consulting with marketing ex- perts and the team’s staff and ownership, chose the name “TinCaps.”

The TinCaps moniker is in reference to beloved pioneer , who, according to legend, wore his tin cooking pot on his head. Johnny Appleseed, also known as John Chapman, lived in Fort Wayne and is buried near the site of Memorial Stadium.

The team’s primary colors consist of organic colors — red and green — a scheme consistent with the Johnny Appleseed theme and the project goal of creating Parkview Field as a true park and gathering place within the center of downtown Fort Wayne.

Under Hooton's tutelage in 2013, Fort Wayne had a pitcher lead the league in average for just the second time in franchise history. In 2014, “Hoot” guided to the MWL’s crown (155). In 2015, Hooton helped the TinCaps to a 3.35 ERA, the lowest in the MWL Eastern Division and the Padres’ minor league system. Last year,

On April 16, 1972, in his fourth Major League start, Hooton threw a no-hitter for the Cubs against the . He finished his Major League career with a 151-136 (.526) record with 1,491 over 2,652 . Over 11 career postseason games, Hooton was 6-3 with a 3.17 ERA, including the 1981 postseason, in which Hooton was 5-1 with a 0.82 ERA in five starts for the World Champion . Hooton was named both an All-Star and MVP of the Championship series that season.

He played collegiately at the University of Texas at Austin, putting together a career 35-3 record and a 1.14 ERA. Hooton earned first-team All-American honors in three consecutive seasons from 1969 to 1971. He was drafted second overall in the 1971 amateur draft by the Cubs, and did not play in the minor leagues prior to making his Major League Baseball debut.

Hooton retired after the 1985 season and returned to the University of Texas to earn his degree in broadcast journalism. He began his coaching career in the Dodgers organization in 1988 with the Short-Season Salem (Oregon) Dodgers. He moved on to be the pitching coach of the -A from 1990-1994. During the 1995 and 1996 seasons, he worked in the same capacity for the Triple-A Albuquerque Dukes. Hooton served as the pitching coach at the University of Texas from 1997-1999. In the 2000 season he began the year as the pitching coach at Double-A Round Rock, a affiliate, before being named pitching coach of the major league club midway through the season. He remained in that capacity until the halfway point of the 2004 season. In 2005 he returned to Round Rock, Houston’s Triple-A affiliate, as pitching coach until 2010, when Houston’s Triple-A affiliation shifted to Oklahoma City, where he worked in the same position through the end of the 2012 season.

Hooton lives in San Antonio, Texas, with his wife, Ginger. They have a son, Gene, and a daughter, Layne. HITTING COACH FIELDING COACH ATHLETIC TRAINER STRENGTH & CONDITIONING COACH DOUG BANKS JHONNY CARVAJAL ALLYSE KRAMER JAY YOUNG

2017 TINCAPS MEDIA REGULATIONS

Just TinCaps, Please

The "TinCaps" moniker debuted prior to the 2009 season, the first at Parkview Field. The name is a reference to the beloved pioneer Johnny Appleseed, who was known for wearing his tin cooking pot upon his head. It is believed that Appleseed is buried here in Fort Wayne. The creation of a new identity for the team began with a community-wide "Re-Name the Team" contest that drew more 2,500 suggestions over the course of the two week entry period. Further input was collected from the community regarding some of the more prevalent categories identified as a result of the contest entries. At the close of the process all of the suggestions and input were considered by local and national marketing experts along with the team's staff and ownership. The team sought a new identity that had its roots in the Fort Wayne community, would appeal to a wide audience and was unique in the crowded national sports landscape.

Please only refer to the team in a full reference: “The Fort Wayne TinCaps” or using just the nickname: “TinCaps.” Referring to the team as the “’Caps” is improper, and should be avoided.

If you have any questions or requests, please ask the Media Relations staff and we will make every attempt to accommodate you. We look forward to working with you.

——————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————

CREDENTIALS: Media credentials shall be issued to working members of the media only and are non-transferable. Any unauthorized use of a credential shall result in confiscation of the credential and ejection from Parkview Field.

Subject to space availability, credentials will be issued to recognized newspapers, magazines, television stations and radio stations making reasonable requests in writing on company letterhead at least one day in advance of any game to be covered. Please e-mail credential requests to John Nolan ([email protected]). Credentials may be picked up at the main office of Parkview Field located on Ewing Street north of Brackenridge Street beginning four hours before game time.

The TinCaps shall issue full-season credentials to those media members who will cover the team at Parkview Field on a daily basis throughout the season. Credentials will be issued on a game-by-game basis to members of the media who expect to cover the team periodically throughout the season.

Credentials provide access to areas of Parkview Field as designated on each individual pass.

ENTRY TO PARKVIEW FIELD: All credential holders should enter Parkview Field through the main office located on Ewing Street north of Brackenridge Street or through the employee entrance adjacent to the media parking lot (Diamond Lot) on Brackenridge Street. Media members must sign in at the front desk or with security at the staff gate. No members of the media may enter any promotion or contest. Media members may not join any part of a TinCaps season ticket holder rewards program. It is expected that credentials only be used by media members actively covering that night’s game.

MEDIA PARKING: There are a limited number of media parking spots in the Diamond Lot next to the ballpark on Brackenridge Street, including spots specifically for live TV broadcast vehicles. To gain access to the Diamond Lot, show your media credential to the lot attendant. It is expected that only media members on assignment use media parking spots. Availability is NOT guaranteed.

CLUBHOUSE ACCESS: The clubhouses are located in the lower level of Parkview Field. Clubhouses are open for pre-arranged interviews four hours before game time and remain open until the start of batting practice. The clubhouses are again open from the end of batting practice until one hour before first pitch. Following all games, the clubhouses open after a ten minute “cooling off” period. Still photographers are prohibited from entering the clubhouse without special permission from the TinCaps Media Relations staff.

The clubhouses are not open to the media during rain delays or between games of doubleheaders.

The clubhouses may be closed at any time at the discretion of the manager or a team media relations representative.

The training rooms, restrooms, players’ lounges and umpires’ dressing room are off limits to the media.

FIELD ACCESS: Members of the media whose credentials provide for field access are asked to be respectful of players and coaches who are preparing for a game, and, for their own safety, to remain in foul territory, between first and third base at all times. Unless conducting an interview, members of the media are asked to refrain from sitting in the dugouts and standing near the batting cage during batting practice. No one under the age of 18 is permitted on the field, and personal photographs and autographs are strictly prohibited. All media must clear the field 30 minutes prior to the start of the game unless special permission has been granted. The TinCaps are not responsible for any injuries that may be incurred while on the field.

PRESS BOX: The Parkview Field press box is located on Level 2 of Parkview Field, up the ramp from the Suite Level lounge. To access the press box from the ground level, take the elevator or stairs behind home plate to Level 2. Persons without credentials will not be admitted.

There is a very limited seating area in the press box for working media and seating is NOT guaranteed to be available for all games. Only accredited members of the working media on assignment are eligible for press box seating. The TinCaps ask for the cooperation of the media in maintaining a professional working environment. Cheering or any other disruptive behavior in the press box shall result in credential revocation and ejection from the ballpark.

MEDIA GUIDES: Media guides are available online at tincaps.com/pressbox.
