  • Reds' Greatest Clutch Moments of the Decade
REDS’ GREATEST CLUTCH MOMENTS OF THE DECADE 90 TOP MOMENTS OF THE 1990’S The Reds won 445 spring and summer games throughout the 1990’s. That included 200 league wins and 63 postseason wins , including a total of 36 State Tournament wins . Some of these victories were by significant margins (for example, the Reds 10-runned 174 of their opponents , including 48% of their spring opponents ), and the Reds’ average score in victories was 11-4 throughout the decade. But many of the games were close (84 of the victories were within 2 runs, 53 of which were decided by a single run), especially late in the season when it mattered most. These games required late-inning heroics, including three dozen games where the Reds had to come back from deficits in the last couple of innings to win. The Reds’ season was at times down to its final strike, but the Reds came through to mount heroic victories. The Reds of the 1990’s even trailed numerous future Major League pitchers, once even by 7 runs, and yet still came back to be victorious against all odds. Even a number of the games that ended in the Reds’ favor by a comfortable margin were only decided after the Reds had “that one inning”, where the Reds scored 5 to 13 runs to put away an otherwise tight ballgame. A number of comebacks and late-inning heroics in summer league games have been eliminated from below to showcase only the Reds’ Top 90 clutch moments of the decade. Of the 90 games listed below, the Reds trailed 36 times (sometimes by as many as 6 to 7 runs), were tied late in the game another 37 times, and had to hold onto 1 or 2 runs leads in nearly all of the other games listed below.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL WEEKLY NOTES FRIDAY, JULY 28, 2017 BLACKMON WORKING TOWARD HISTORIC SEASON On Sunday afternoon against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Coors Field, Colorado Rockies All-Star outfi elder Charlie Blackmon went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and his 24th home run of the season. With the round-tripper, Blackmon recorded his 57th extra-base hit on the season, which include 20 doubles, 13 triples and his aforementioned 24 home runs. Pacing the Majors in triples, Blackmon trails only his teammate, All-Star Nolan Arenado for the most extra-base hits (60) in the Majors. Blackmon is looking to become the fi rst Major League player to log at least 20 doubles, 20 triples and 20 home runs in a single season since Curtis Granderson (38-23-23) and Jimmy Rollins (38-20-30) both accomplished the feat during the 2007 season. Since 1901, there have only been seven 20-20-20 players, including Granderson, Rollins, Hall of Famers George Brett (1979) and Willie Mays (1957), Jeff Heath (1941), Hall of Famer Jim Bottomley (1928) and Frank Schulte, who did so during his MVP-winning 1911 season. Charlie would become the fi rst Rockies player in franchise history to post such a season. If the season were to end today, Blackmon’s extra-base hit line (20-13-24) has only been replicated by 34 diff erent players in MLB history with Rollins’ 2007 season being the most recent. It is the fi rst stat line of its kind in Rockies franchise history. Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig is the only player in history to post such a line in four seasons (1927-28, 30-31).

The UCLA baseball program has sent eight players to play for the USA Baseball National Team a total of 10 times, beginning with the selection of Shane Mack in 1984. Most recently, former UCLA shortstop Brandon Crawford helped the U.S. National Team capture its second consecutive FISU (International University Sports Federation) World Championship in the summer of 2006. Crawford’s selection in 2006 marked the first time a Bruin had been named since Karp, a right-handed pitcher, competed for the national team in 2000. The 2006 U.S. National Team finished its summer campaign with a 28-2-1 mark and successfullyl defended its gold medal won in the 2004 FISU Tournament in Taiwan. UCLA’s student-athletes have not been the only individuals affiliated with the U.S. National Team. FRONT OFFICE The A’s added Jason Giambi (left) and Matt Holliday (right) to bolster their offense for the 2009 season. COOPERSTOWN AWAITS ‘BASEBALL’S GREATEST LEADOFF HITTER’ FRONT OFFICE HENDERSON TO BECOME 15TH ATHLETIC INDUCTED INTO HALL OF FAME JULY 26 The greatest leadoff hitter in baseball history has a date with Cooperstown this year. On Sunday, July 26, Rickey Henderson—the pride of Oakland, Calif. and his hometown team, the Oakland Athletics—will stride to the podium in upstate New York and join the game’s immortals. And while fans and media are sure to join in the discussion, there should be no debate: Rickey was, indeed, the greatest leadoff man the sport has ever known. Better than Cobb. Better than Rose. Better than Brock. Better 2009 ATHLETICS than Wills. Henderson, who was born in the shadow of the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum and graduated from Oakland Tech High School, played 25 Major League seasons, including four stints with the A’s that spanned 14 years (1979-84, 1989-93, 1994-95, 1998). And during that quarter century of baseball, the mercurial outfielder posted unprecedented offensive numbers. He set Major League career records for runs scored (2,295), stolen bases (1,406) and walks (2,190, later eclipsed by Barry Bonds), and banged out 3,055 hits, 297 home runs and 1,115 RBI, with a .401 on-base percentage. He REVIEW also hit 81 home runs leading off a game, still a Major League mark. Some of his most shining moments came in an Oakland uniform. In 1982, he shattered the single-season record by stealing 130 bases.
