After guiding the Golden Eagles through an injury-plagued 2010 season that came on the heels of a trip to the California Collegiate Athletic Association Vi n c e Be r i n g h e l e Championship Tournament in 2009, Vince Beringhele returns for his fourth season as the Cal State L.A. head #11 He a d Co a ch baseball coach. t h e a s o n The Golden Eagles struggled in 2010 with a thin 4 S roster that was depleted by injury and left Cal State L.A. 79-70 scrambling to find enough healthy arms to complete the season. Cal State L.A. used a total of 19 throughout the season, .530 Wi n n i n g Pc t . including nine players who started the season as position players. The Golden Eagles had an All-American for the second straight season when Sam Wiley earned top honors, while Cal State L.A. also had a pair of All-West Region players in Wiley and Mario Ramirez. Cal State L.A. finished the season with an 18-31 overall record and a 16-24 mark in conference play. In his first three years at Cal State L.A., Beringhele has led the Golden Eagles to a 79-70 overall record and a 60-47 mark in conference play. Cal State L.A. has had 16 players earn All-Conference honors, nine players make All-West Region teams and two players earn All-America recognition in his first three years as the head coach. The challenging 2010 season followed a successful 2009 campaign. Beringhele led the Golden Eagles to a winning season for the second straight year under his watch and for a fourth consecutive year overall, something that hadn’t happened at Cal State L.A. since 1965-68. Cal State L.A. was 32-17 overall in 2009 and posted its third 30-win season in four years. The Golden Eagles were 22-11 in conference play and earned the No. 3 seed to the CCAA tournament. Cal State L.A. lost to Sonoma State in the opening round, beat Cal State Dominguez Hills in an elimination game and then lost to Sonoma State later in the day, 10-9, to exit the tournament. The win over Cal State Dominguez Hills was the first victory in a CCAA Tournament game for Cal State L.A. The Golden Eagles, who were ranked fourth in the NCAA Division II West Region entering the final week of regular-season play, surprisingly slipped out of the top four following the CCAA tourney. Beringhele, who was a successful assistant coach at two NCAA Division I programs and was also a former assistant at Cal State L.A., led the Golden Eagles to a 29-22 record in 2008 with a young and inexperienced squad. The Golden Eagles had only five players returning from their 2007 team and had lost 19 seniors. Beringhele led Cal State L.A. to a 23-12 record in the CCAA and the Golden Eagles missed qualifying for the four-team championship tournament by just one-half game. Cal State L.A. finished the season with a rush, winning 11 of its last 13 conference contests. Before coming to Cal State L.A. in 2007, Beringhele spent four years at Loyola Marymount as an assistant to head coach Frank Cruz. He was promoted to the associate head coach position prior to the 2006 season. The Lions captured the West Coast Conference title in 2005. During his time at Loyola Marymount, Beringhele coached third base and worked closely with the Lions’ offense. Chris Pettit, one of the players Beringhele worked closely with, was the organizational Player of the Year with the of Anaheim in 2007. Beringhele joined Loyola Marymount in 2004 after 15 years with UCLA. Serving as the hitting instructor and recruiting coordinator, Beringhele worked with , , , , Eric Valent, Ben Francisco, Michael Moore, Chris Pritchett, Joel Wolfe and Paul Ellis, all of whom were drafted in the first five rounds of the draft. During his time at UCLA, Beringhele was credited with bringing the top high school talent in California to the program. UCLA’s class in 1997 was regarded as the best in the nation by Collegiate Baseball and the 2003 recruiting class earned a top-five ranking from . Beringhele helped guide the Bruins to the College in 1997 after they battled back to win five games in a row at the regional to advance to the Series. The Bruins also advanced to a Super Regional in 2000. He began his college coaching career as an assistant coach for two years at Cal State L.A. in 1988-89. He got his introduction to coaching as an assistant for Cruz at University High School before going to Cal State L.A. Beringhele also worked with Cruz in the summer of 2004 during the selection process for the gold-medal winning USA Baseball National Team. Before beginning his college coaching career, Beringhele played in the ’ minor league system for three years in Lethbridge, Vero Beach and Bakersfield. In 1983, he batted .338 at Lethbridge and tied for the league lead in hits (94) with teammate and former Dodger Jeff Hamilton. In 1984, he batted .256 for the Vero Beach Dodgers and collected 100 walks in 100 games. He completed his playing career in 1985, playing for both Vero Beach and Bakersfield. Peraza helped the Golden Eagles to a 32-17 overall record and a 21-11 conference mark in 2009. Cal State L.A. reached the four- team California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament and won its first-ever CCAA tournament game by beating Cal State Dominguez Hills . The Golden Eagles finished third in the conference with a pitching staff that included All-West Region and All- CCAA Isaac Morales, who was drafted by the Florida Marlins after the season. The staff also included one of the most improved starting pitchers in the conference in Nathan Pickett and had three pitchers receive All-Conference recognition. Peraza helped guide a staff that included seven first-year pitchers. He helped hold together a pitching staff in 2010 that was ravaged by injuries. The Golden Eagles were forced to use several position players on the mound throughout the season and struggled to an 18-31 overall record. One bright spot was the emergence of Wally Goodline as a top-of-the-rotation starter. He was one of only two pitchers who started 10 or more games. In his first season with the program, Peraza helped the Golden Eagles to a 23-12 conference record that left Cal State L.A. just one- half game out of a postseason spot in 2008. The Golden Eagles were 29-22 overall. Cal State L.A.’s young staff featured Morales, who earned All-West Region and All-CCAA honors and included six freshmen and four other first-year pitchers. He came to Cal State L.A. following a one-year stint at Eastern Oklahoma State College in Oklahoma. At Eastern Oklahoma, his pitching staff produced the Bi-State Conference Pitcher of the Year in 2007. It was the fourth straight year that Peraza’s staff had a conference pitcher of the year, including two All-State pitchers of the year. One of the individuals Peraza coached in 2006, Bobby Laframboise, who went on to the University of New Mexico, was named to the Wallace Watch List. That award is presented to the collegiate player of the year. Prior to Eastern Oklahoma, Peraza spent one season as an assistant coach at Rio Hondo Community College. Under his guidance, his pitching staff produced three players who signed Division I scholarships and one who was named the California Co-Pitcher of the Year. His coaching career began at El Camino College, where he had two pitchers named to the All-Conference first team, one to the second team and two others receive honorable mention. Peraza has also coached in the summer in the prestigious Alaska Summer League for the Kenai Peninsula Oilers. In the summer of 2007, his team had the Baseball America top pitching and offensive prospects for the Alaskan League. That club had nine players selected in the Major League Baseball draft. In 2008, he coached the Southern California Fire to a sixth-place finish in the National Baseball Congress Championship Tournament out of 64 teams. His team won the conference and he was selected to coach in the conference’s All-Star game. As a player, Peraza is in the El Camino College record books for career saves and appearances. A graduate of San Diego State, Peraza pitched out of the for legendary coach Tony Gwynn. #33 - Jo e Go r d o n - 1s t Se a s o n - Ass i s t a n t Co a c h A former high school head coach who has extensive experience working with NCAA Division I and players over the past 10 years, Joe Gordon joins the Cal State L.A. baseball program as an assistant coach. Reeder Field in the Billie Jean King Sports Complex is home of Cal State L.A. baseball, is named for Jim Reeder, who served as Golden Eagles head coach from 1958-71, compiling a 397-272-6 (.593) record during that span, holding the record for wins by a CSULA mentor until John Herbold, who retired with 455 wins from 1984-2004. With seating for approximately 600 fans directly on field level, Reeder Field offers Cal State L.A. baseball fans a chance to be close to the action. In the spring of 2000, a new baseball scoreboard was erected just beyond the left field fence at Reeder Field, thanks in part to the generous support of Cal State L.A.’s Associated Students Incorporated (ASI). In January 2001, Reeder Field underwent extensive renovation with the complete Dimensions at Reeder Field lazer-leveling of the field. In addition to new sod being placed in both the infield and outfield, Left Field Line ...... 310 a new irrigation system was installed to allow for better drainage during rainy periods early in Normal Left Field . . . . . 350 the season. Left-Center Alley . . . . . 372 In the winter of 2010, a new artificial turf infield was installed at Reeder Field. The Center Field ...... 406 turf extends to both dugouts and has given the ballpark the nicest playing surface in the Deep Right-Center ...... 362 conference. It also gives the baseball field the ability to maintain a safe playing surface during Right-Center Alley . . . . .337 inclement weather. Near the Right Field Line . . 325 The ballpark has several nuances which make it unique among collegiate fields. The Right Field Line ...... 331 short 310-foot distance down the left field line at Reeder Field quickly darts out to 350, very similar to the “Pesky Pole” setup found in right field at in Boston. If left field is L.A.’s version of Fenway Park, then right field must be considered our own version of Oriole Park at Camden Yards. Just like the home ballpark, the right field porch at Reeder Field is an inviting target to left-handed hitters. The line is a standard 331 feet, but the shortest distance to right field is 325, just inside the line. It’s in the right-center power alley where eyeballs of lefty sluggers get larger. The distance to that alley is a mouth-watering 337 feet while “deep” right-center is a mere 362 feet. However, like Camden Yards, you have to get the ball up. A 30-foot high wall protects the adjacent parking lot and campus buildings from would-be home run balls at Reeder Field. Worth noting, the wall at Camden Yards is only 25-feet tall.
