In addition to the always tough Ohio Valley Conference schedule, the MSU baseball team annually plays teams ranked among the best in the nation. This year, the Eagles will journey to Tennessee and to 2007 College World Series participant Louisville. Kentucky, an NCAA Region host in 2006, plus Cincinnati and West Virginia are on the 2008 slate. In recent years, Eagle teams have played Arizona, Clemson, South Carolina, , Vanderbilt, Kansas State, Virginia Tech, Mississippi State, Georgia, Indiana, Ole Miss and Memphis.

Community Service

The 2008 Eagle baseball team has con­ tinued to be involved in numerous community service projects. The team continued its traditon of providing Thanksgiving and Christmas meals for

Through the years, Morehead State has been well represented in professional baseball. Cur­ rently, Jon Rauch (right) is a member of the Washington Nationals pitching staff after being a third round draft choice of the Chicago White Sox. Walt Terrell made post-season starts as a pitcher in the 1980s and 1990s, primarily with the Detroit Tigers. He was a 17-game winner for the Tigers in 1987. Willie , Blair was a 16-game winner for the Tigers in 1997 and made a post-season appearance with the . He was an 11th round draft choice of the Toronto Blue Jays. Denny Doyle played in the 1975 World Series with the Boston Red Sox. He also played for the Angels, then California, and Philadel­ phia. Drew Hall, pictured below being inducted into the Eagle Athletic Hall of Fame last fall, was the third player selected in the 1982 Major League draft, taken by the . He pitched five seasons in the big leagues. Former Eagle Baseball Coach was a reliever with several teams in the 1960s and 1970s, but played in the 1963 and 1964 World Series with the New York Yankees. Addition­ ally, more than 20 Eagles have played minor league baseball either for Major League farm teams or for teams in the independent professional leagues. Pitcher Henry Mabee was selected in the 19th round of last year's draft by the Chicago White Sox and enjoyed a tre­ mendous rookie season as a closer for Great Falls in the Pioneer League. HEAD COACH

Jay Sorg, a veteran professional baseball manager, coach and player, is in his first season as Head Baseball Coach at Morehead State University, his alma mater. Sorg played three seasons at MSU (1992-94) before being drafted by the Cincinnati Reds organization in the 15th round of the 1994 First-Year Player Draft. He had played for the 1993 Eagle squad that won the Ohio Val ley Conference Tournament. Prior to the professional draft in 1994, he served as the Eagle captain, was team most valuable player and earned First-Team AII-OVC honors. Alter a five-year stint as a player in the Reds' minor league system, he was hired by the club as a baseball instructor in their player development area. During the next five years, he held several positions with the Reds, including: manager of the Class A Clinton (Iowa) and Advanced Rookie League Billings (Mont.) minor league teams, hitting coach for Class A Rock­ ford (Ill.) and Billings minor league teams, bench coach for the AAA Louisville Bats and minor league camp coordinator. Sorg led Clinton to the playoffs as the youngest profes­ sional manager (26) in the nation. He managed Bi llings to the Pioneer League Championship. In order to be closer to a growing family, he left professional baseball in 2003 and served nearly three years as director of baseball operations for Champi­ ons Sports Complex in Louisville. He returned to the Cincinnati Reds in June 2006, again as a baseball instructor in player development. In 2006 and in 2007 before taking over the MSU pro­ gram, Sorg was a bench coach for the Bats. During his tenure with the Reds, he was a part of eight play­ off and four championship teams. "Jay is an extremely talented and personable in­ dividual," said MSU Director of Athletics Brian Hutchinson. "His baseball experience speaks for it­ self. He has worked with and instructed some of the most talented individuals in the sport." At the end of his first professional baseball sea­ son as a player, he returned to MSU and completed a bachelor's degree in accounting (1994) after only three and-a-half years at the University. The 34-year old Sorg is married to the former Shelly Rocke, a standout volleyball alumnae for the Eagles. She still ranks in the top 10 in Eagle Volleyball history in digs, total attacks and games played. They have three children, Ty, Kyley and Casey. RICK PARR

ASSISTANT COACH

Rick Parr, a veteran college coach, baseball instructor and professional player, is in his first season as an Assistant Head Baseball Coach at Morehead State University. After winning nearly 500 games in 18 seasons as head baseball coach at Indiana University-Southeast , Parr has most recently directed RP Base­ ball, a baseball academy with instructional services and cl inics, while coaching high school baseball in Indiana and in a summer collegiate league in Illinois. He also recently worked with Champions Baseball in Louisville where he met Sorg in another baseball instructional setting. Early in his coaching career, he was head coach at Shawnee (Ill.) Com­ munity College and an assistant coach at both John A. Logan Community College and Greenville Col lege. "Rick is going to help our program tremendously," Sorg said. "He has great baseball knowledge, college head coaching experience and profes­ sional playing experience. Rick is a proven winner at the college level." A native of Sellersburg, Ind., Parr was a multi-sport standout at Silver Creek High School. He played baseball and basketball at Greenville College. Drafted by the Boston Red Sox in t he seventh round of the 1977 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, he played three seasons in the Red Sox minor league system before returning to Greenville to complete a bachelor's degree (1983) and begin his coaching career. He has also earned a master's degree (1991) from Indiana University. Parr has a 14-year old son, Ryan.

Jason Neal is in his second season as an assistant coach at Morehead State University. He worked with Eag le hitters and served as bullpen and bench coach in 2006-07. He has spent the past three summers as the bullpen catcher for the Cincinnati Reds AAA affiliate Louisville Bats. Neal played at Oakland City Uni,versity and earned a bachelor's degree there in 2003.

Ryan Wheat is in h is first season as an assistant baseball coach at Morehead State University. He comes to Morehead State after serving as an assistant coach at Spalding University last season. He is a former player at Spalding, where he participated in the NAIA World Series and served as team captain for two seasons. He holds a bachelor's degree from Spalding (2003). From 2003-06, he worked for Champions Baseball Academy in Louis­ ville, Ky. In 2004, he became general manager at Champions in New Albany, Ind. He is married to the former Rebekah Shemwell of LaGrange, Ky. Under the direction of MSU Strength and Conditioning Coach Kevin Deweese and the MSU baseball coaching staff, Eagle baseball players utilize the strength and conditioning facilities at Jayne Stadium, which include the track and the Phil Simms Weight Training Fa ­ cility, and the Eagle Weight Room in the Academic-Athletic Center.

Earning Degrees

The Eagle Academic Success Center is located in the Academic-Athletic Cen­ ter. Valerie Ousley is the athletic academic coordinator. The MSU baseball team was an integral part of the University earning its third consecutive Ohio Valley Conference Institutional Academic Achievement Award. Jarred Seasor was a 2006-07 OVC Academic Medal of Honor winner for having the top grade point average among all league baseball student-athletics. Fifteen Eagle baseball players were named to the OVC Commissioner's Honor Roll for the 2006-07 academic year. Twelve of those recipients are back on the 2008 MSU base­ ball roster. Last year's senior catcher, Donald Cheney, was awarded the Laughlin-Miller Award recognizing MSU's top student-ath­ lete for 2006-07 at last fall's Eagle Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. Historically, the University traces its lineage to the Morehead Normal School, which op doors in 1887. The private school closed in the spring of 1922 when the Kentucky General established Morehead State Normal School. The state institution accepted its first student§i of 1923 and graduated its first class in 1927. Name changes occurred in 1926 when "and College" was added, again in 1930 when it was shortened to Morehead State Teachers Coll in 1948 when "Teachers" was dropped and, finally, to university status In 1966. Academically, the University offers 79 under­ graduate degree programs, including 8 asso­ ciate level degrees and 12 pre-professional programs In four colleges, Business, Educa­ tion, Caudill College of Humanities and Science and Technology, and the Institute for Regional Analysis and Public Policy and 20 academic departments. There are 55 graduate degree programs plus 24 graduate level non-degree programs designed especially for professional educators. The education specialist in Ave spe­ cialty areas also Is offered. A master's degree for physician assistants, social workers and a (:JOperative doctoral program, all with the Uni­ versity of Kentucky, are available on the MSU campus. Classes are conducted in Ashland, Jackson, Maysville, Mt. Sterling, Pikeville, Prestonsburg, West Liberty and other locations. Regional cam­ puses located In Ashland, Jackson, Mt. Sterling, Prestonsburg and West Liberty are staffed with ft.ill-time directors. Additionally, the University :Offers a number of distance learning courses throughout the region via the Internet and Interactive compressed video. Sixty-one per­ cent of MSU's 384 full-time faculty members hold doctoral degrees. Physically, the University is located in the foothills of the Dan­ iel Boone National Forest in Rowan County. The nearly 500-acre main campus within the city limits of Morehead includes more than 50 major structures with a total replacement value of more than $144 million. Beyond the city, the University's real estate holdings include the 320-acre Derrickson Agricultural complex and the par 72, 6, 902-yard Eagle Trace Golf Course. The instructional plant includes 120 classrooms and 112 laboratories. Housing facilities Button Include space for approximately Auditorium 2,600 students in a variety of housing styles including traditional residence halls, suites and apartments. Fiscally, the University currently operates on an -annual budget of $109.8 million with about $44.8 million provided by the state and $45.4 million coming from tuition and fees. Additionally, grants and contracts from external sources for research, service and aca­ demic/student support projects generate more than $12 million each year. Statistically, the University has awarded more than 50,000 degrees and currently has more than 1,100 full-time employees. Enrollment for fall 2007 was 9,066, with the student body repre­ senting 100 Kentucky counties, 39 states and 27 foreign countries. The University attracts more than 50,000 visitors annually and its economic Impact, directly and Indirectly, on the Morehead area is estimated at more than $80 million yearly. Administratively, an 11-member Board of Regents governs the University with eight citizens appointed by the governor and t hree seats held by elected faculty, staff and student representatives. A New England native who made Appalachia his adopte Dr. Wayne D. Andrews has served since January 1, 2005\ 13th president of Morehead State University. He is a graduate of Fitchburg State College in Massa where he earned a B. 5. degree In 1974 and of West University where he received a master's in 1976 and a do in 1977. Andrews has 30 years of higher education experience public, comprehensive universities - Morehead State, nessee State and Illinois State. He has served in a va riety of roles, Including a tenured pro in engineering technology, department chair, executive assistant to the president, vice pr student affairs, vice president for administration, vice president for administration and chi ing officer and president. His potential for leadership was recognized in 1993 with his sel Fellow of the American Council on Education (ACE). In addition to his background as a teacher and academic administrator, President A extensive personal experience in strategic planning, student services, human resources, fai struction, intercollegiate athletics, information technology, economic development and partnerships. He was selected as MSU's president on the strength of his successful academic and administrative career at insti­ tutions very similar to More­ head State, his familiarity with Appalachia, his effective and engaging management style and his unwavering commit­ ment to student success as the primary focus of the Univer­ sity. Andrews is an Army veteran whose hobbies include restora­ tion of antique clocks and the singing and playing of tradi­ tional music. He and his wife of 35 years, Susan, a retired elementary school reading spe­ cialist, have two adult children, Josh and Jill. He has remained active in the local alumni association of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, and he holds memberships in t he National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athlet­ ics, the Division I-AA Athletic Directors Association, the AFCA, and CASE. Hutchinson currently represents the Pioneer Football League as a member of the NCAA Division I Footba ll Issues Committee, the NCAA Football Championship SubdiVision Governance Committee, and the FCS Mid­ west Regional Advisory Committee. For the 2006-07 year, Hutchinson served as chair of t he OVC Board of Directors of Athletics. He has attended numerous development and athlet­ ics administrations conferences and has been a pre­ senter for the NCAA YES! clinic program. Hutchinson served as the director for the 2002 OVC golf champi­ onship and as the director of the 2003 OVC volleyball championship. Madonna Weathers assumed the position of Vice Student Life in July of 2002. Melissa Dunn is in her second year as Assistant Director of Athletics and Senior Woman Administrator in the Eagle athletic department. She had most recently served as Director of Stu­ dent Activities and Greek Life at Morehead State before moving to athletics. Dunn, who holds three masters degrees, induding two at Morehead State, has been a member of the MSU staff for 10 years. Dunn had served as Director of Student Activities/Greek Life since December 2004. In her position, Dunn oversaw intramu­ rals, spirit squads, student organizations and Greek letter orga­ nizations. From September 2002 to December 2004, she was the Assistant Director of Admls she coordinated all special events for the Office of Admissions, including SOAR, the MS College Fairs, all open houses and all the Meet Morehead State Night programs. Lichtenstein joined the MSU staff after serving as Director of Marketing and Promotions for the athletic department at Northern Illinois University. The Sports Medicine Program at Morehead State offers student-athletes the most up-to•date professional services available. Led by Assistant Director of Athletics/Director of Sports Medicine Richard Fletcher, the Sports Medicine Depart­ ment allows athletes a wide range of options for treatment ar;d rehabilitation of Injuries. One of the major support services offered Is the main athletic training room located adjacent to Jayne Stadium. The facility contains four whirlpools, four electric stimulators, four ultra­ sound units and nine treatment tables, along with a variety of other services and equipment. Each athletic team has a ful I­ time or graduate assistant athletic trainer assigned to ttiem, and each of MSU's trainers are fully trained and accredl~ed to perform life-saving and injury treatments. The training staff also utilizes two remote facilities in the Academic-Athletic Cen­ ter and Wetherby Gym. Both facilities have state-of-the-art equipment.

The Morehead State athletic training staff includes Fletcher, Jamey Carver, A.T.C.1 Sara Larson, A.T. C., grad trainers Marjorie Smith and Ashley Groenhout and several student assistant trainers. The training staff also works closely with the Caudill Health Clinic on campus In Allie Young Hall and with St, Medical Center.

Carver earned a bachelor's degree in exercise science from North­ western State University in Natchitoches, La. Through adminis­ trative and athletic leadership at More­ head State, a study of athletics facilities commenced in the winter of 2006 to identify a plan that would guide decisions made by MSU Athlet­ Academi ics well into the 21st 1 century. While MSU has much to be proud of, it became quite apparent that significant work should be done to HE improve the physical athletics plant.
