2008-09 MURRAY STATE TRACK & FIELD 3 Home of the Racers Marshall Gage Track: Home of the Racers Without question, Murray State’s track facilities are some of the finest in the nation, and the most outstanding in the region. The centerpiece of the track and field facilities is the nine-lane-state-of-the-art running surface. Originally built in 1973 as part of the Roy Stewart Stadium construction project, the track was initially surfaced with a Rekortan running surface used in the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. Recently the surface was replaced again giving the Racers a brand new track to practice and compete on.

MSU alum Marshall Gage was the primary donor and fundraiser for the first resurfacing project and continues to be a great supporter of the program. So much in fact, the track was named in his honor in 1996.

Gage ran for the Racers from 1957-61 as a sprinter and hurdler. Gage was the only runner in the 1959 Ohio Valley Conference championships to win three events, placing first in the 100-yard dash, 120-yard high hurdles and 220- yard low hurdles. He was inducted to the MSU Hall of Fame in 1965 and was also a 1995 Golden Horseshoe Award recipient.

In addition to the nine-lane track, the MSU track and field facilities include spacious, modern locker rooms for men and women, and a well-equipped weight room and training room.

Located inside the stadium are: two long jump pits, a high jump area, a pole vault pit and a shot put area. Discus, javelin and hammer throw facilities are situated just outside the stadium but within the athletic complex. Roy Stewart Stadium

Considered to be one of the finest facilities in the nation, picturesque Roy Stewart Stadium has provided MSU with a spacious, well-tended and modern facility since it opened in 1973. The seven-floor structure provides optimum seating for 16,800 fans. It serves as the centerpiece to Murray State’s centralized athletic facility along with the Regional Special Events Center for MSU and the team’s . The stadium, not only has a new track, but also in the summer of 2007 a new field turf surface was installed.

The first level of the stadium houses spacious offices and meeting rooms for football and track and field. It also includes the Tom “Doc” Simmons Training Room and one of the finest weight rooms in America, along with expansive dressing rooms for football, track, and baseball. The second floor serves as the primary home for the MSU athletics department with offices.

The Stadium which opened in 1973 and named for Roy Stewart one of MSU’s greatest coaches and administrators is still one of the finest athletics faciltities in the region and a continued testament to the MSU spirit that those who had the vision to build it.

4 2008-09 MURRAY STATE TRACK & FIELD Home of the Racers Head Coach Dereck Chavis Head Coach Dereck Chavis Murray State University Head Track and Field Coach Dereck Chavis is in his 13th overall season of coaching track and field. Chavis joined the MSU athletics department on Jan. 12, 2005.

His coaching duties encompass the sprints, hurdles, horizontal and vertical jumps. Chavis is a United States Track and Field Level I Lead Instructor and is a USATF Level II coach in the sprints, hurdles and endurance events. In addition to being a USATF meet official, Coach Chavis is also a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, certified by the National Strength and Conditioning Association.

Since his arrival in 2005 the impact he has made on the women’s team has been significant and unparalleled. It is evident that Chavis has restored and propelled Murray State women’s program into a perennial contender within the OVC in only four seasons. During the past four seasons the track program has seen eight OVC individual conference champions, 22 all-conference athletes, and 17 broken school records. Chavis has helped to coach athletes to all-conference and record setting performances in the pole vault, long jump, and shot put.

Third Season The 2007-08 track and field season has been touted as the most successful in Murray State’s history. Indiana State ‘94 During that campaign Chavis coached an OVC Athlete of the Year, five conference champions, 11 all-conference athletes, a freshman of the year. Additionally 13 school records broken and MSU had13 OVC Athletes of the Week selections. During the women’s 2008 cross country campaign, the team placed second, which was the highest place the Murray State had finished since 1990. During that season the team garnered two All-OVC First Team and two All-OVC Second Team athletes and the Freshman of the Year award.

Chavis began his coaching career at Indiana State, his alma mater, where he was a two-time team captain and All-Missouri Valley Conference sprinter. During his two-year stint as an assistant at Indiana State, he was instrumental in helping the women’s program gain two Missouri Valley track and field titles. He coached a runner-up in the 60-meter high hurdles and a 4th-place finisher in the long jump at the men’s NCAA Division I national meet while at Indiana State. Additionally, Chavis coached Sariyu Shittu who ranked 3rd and 4th on the women’s list in Coach Dereck Chavis at a Racer workout with Shameka Dial (left) and the 200 and 400; and Craig Brown, who ranked fourth in the 60 and Dominique Robinson. indoor 200-meter dashes.

Chavis also spent five seasons at Division III Hope College where he was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Kinesiology and the men’s and women’s head track and field coach. During his time at Hope he elevated the men’s and women’s programs by developing them into conference championship contenders and garnering the most national recognition ever attained in the program’s history. Under Chavis’ tutelage the programs boasted seven All-Americans, 23 national qualifiers, 21 conference champions, 31 all-conference athletes, two conference MVP’s and 32 school records. Some notable athletes include three-time national qualifier Eduardo Perez in the 400-meter hurdles, All-American Christiana Watkin in the long jump and national qualifier Erica Torgerson in the heptathlon.

Coach Chavis’ knowledge of speed and power development are keys in his ability to improve his athletes and elevate the overall competitiveness of the cross country and track / field athletes. His firm belief patiently teaching the skills and technique involved in an event, in addition to bringing the athlete to a high level of power and fitness, have been the catalysts for the high level of success that has followed him.

Chavis is married to Llena Chavis and has a daughter, Danielle, and two sons, Xavier and Ian.

Equally important, the curriculum helps students develop communication skills vital to becoming a responsible citizen and a lifelong learner.

The Campus Since its founding in 1922, Murray State has gained a reputation for having one of the most beautiful campuses in the country.

When the Chronicle of Higher Education featured MSU’s improved style of education, it wrote of “a sense of college unity” and “competition that carries over into the classroom.” The Times of London referred to the idea as a vision of Oxford University in Kentucky.

Student Life Murray State University offers an active, vibrant and challenging environment for its students. From the classroom to the residential college room, the Murray State experience is one which students will harbor for a lifetime.

In the classroom, educators are dedicated to seeing each student reach his or her potential. Class size is about 30 to 35 students.

Outside of the classroom, Murray State offers many athletic and social programs. Intramural sports operate year-round, while fraternities and sororities allow students to form bonds with “brothers” and “sisters” which will last a lifetime. Murray State also attracts a wide array of nationally-acclaimed speakers, top concerts and other events.

Perhaps the biggest event on campus each year is Homecoming. Each fall, thousands of alumni return to Murray State to renew old friendships and visit the place they called home for four years.

Racer Athletics The university’s intercollegiate athletic programs are a source of tradition, school pride, spirit and entertainment for students, alumni and community members alike. Competing at the highest level of college athletics, MSU is a member of NCAA Division I and is a founding member of the Ohio Valley Conference with its 16-team program.

Murray State is committed to athletic excellence, which is evident by its 96 OVC championships in the 54 years that the Racers have been competing in the league.

One of the greatest benefits of Racer athletics to Murray State is the attention and acclaim which it brings to the university. The Murray State men’s basketball team has achieved extensive notoriety by competing in the NCAA Tournament in most years.

Also, the Racers find themselves being written about in such publications as Sports Illustrated, ESPN The Magazine, The Sporting News, USA Today and dozens of publications and newspapers across the country. Additionally, Murray State is featured several times each year on ESPN and Fox Sports Net South as part of their college basketball and football broadcasts.

Murray State has also sent its share of players to the NFL, the NBA, Major League Baseball and other professional leagues around the world.

Known for its friendly citizens and beautiful, wooded landscape, Murray/Calloway County is a growing and thriving area.

In addition to its strong educational, employment and quality of life opportunities, Murray/Calloway County’s location is beneficial in many ways. Also, four major cities (St. Louis, Nashville, Memphis, Louisville) are within a few hours’ driving distance from Murray.

One of the biggest attractions in western Kentucky is scenic Kentucky Lake and the Land Between the Lakes. Just a 15-minute drive from the Murray State campus are boating, fishing, hunting, camping and hiking opportunities, which students often take advantage of during fall and spring weekends.
