1 Old, Unhappy, Far-off Things A Little Learning I have not been in a battle; not near one, nor heard one from afar, nor seen the aftermath. I have questioned people who have been in battle - my father and father-in-law among them; have walked over battlefields, here in England, in Belgium, in France and in America; have often turned up small relics of the fighting - a slab of German 5.9 howitzer shell on the roadside by Polygon Wood at Ypres, a rusted anti-tank projectile in the orchard hedge at Gavrus in Normandy, left there in June 1944 by some highlander of the 2nd Argyll and Sutherlands; and have sometimes brought my more portable finds home with me (a Minie bullet from Shiloh and a shrapnel ball from Hill 60 lie among the cotton-reels in a painted papier-mache box on my drawing-room mantelpiece). I have read about battles, of course, have talked about battles, have been lectured about battles and, in the last four or five years, have watched battles in progress, or apparently in progress, on the television screen. I have seen a good deal of other, earlier battles of this century on newsreel, some of them convincingly authentic, as well as much dramatized feature film and countless static images of battle: photographs and paintings and sculpture of a varying degree of realism. But I have never been in a battle. And I grow increasingly convinced that I have very little idea of what a battle can be like. Neither of these statements and none of this experience is in the least remarkable. -

orgive me for using so much of this issue on stories about the First World War and how people from Goxhill were involved in it. 100 years since the start on August 4th 1914, is well beyond F most people’s living memories. My parents were around then as children, yet never spoke to me of their memories of the Great War, or much about the Second World War. But the impact made by the sacrifices, not just of those directly involved in the war, but all those left behind to take on the work load of the men away fighting and keeping the home and family together, is everlasting. Women especially rose to the challenge of doing work previously only done by men, hard physical and skilled engineering work of all kinds. The world of work and expectations of equality were first sewn during this period and has resulted in all the progress in society since and the equal opportunities and responsibilities open to all today. It also eventually led to peace in Europe, unfortunately only after yet another World War. It is only through the stories of people who died and those who survived the war, that we can gain a more personal insight into what it was really like behind all those terrible statistics and names of places of significance that we have been told about. These were real people, with real families living in villages just like ours. Joining together in groups from their area, friends and colleagues enlisting in groups such as the Grimsby Chums. -

Commemorated on Thiepval Memorial Pier and face 1C WW1 Centenary record of an Unknown Soldier Private Eric DAVISON Service Number: 684 10th Battalion (Grimsby Chums) Lincolnshire Regiment Died 1st July 1916 aged 26 Commemorated on Thiepval Memorial Pier and face 1C WW1 Centenary record of an Unknown Soldier Recruitment – 10th Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment – The Grimsby Chums Private Eric DAVISON was a member of the Grimsby Chums who were a Pals battalion of Kitchener's Army raised in and around the town of Grimsby in Lincolnshire in 1914. When the battalion was taken over by the British Army it was officially named the 10th (Service) Battalion, The Lincolnshire Regiment. It was the only 'pals battalion' to be called 'chums'. Battle of the Somme The plan was for the British forces to attack on a fourteen mile front after an intense week-long artillery bombardment of the German positions. Over 1.6 million shells were fired, 70 for every one metre of front, the idea being to decimate the German Front Line. Two minutes before zero-hour 19 mines were exploded under the German lines. Whistles sounded and the troops went over the top at 7.30am. They advanced in lines at a slow, steady pace across No Man's Land towards the German front line. ITEM 1 TRANSPORT COMMITTEE NEWS 07 MARCH 2000 This report may be of interest to: All Members and Parish/Neighbourhood Councils RAIL UPDATE Accountable Officer: John Inman Author: Stephen Mortimer 1. Purpose 1.1 To advise the Committee of developments relating to Milton Keynes’ rail services. 2. Summary 2.1 West Coast Main Line Modernisation and Upgrade is now in the active planning stage. It will result in faster and more frequent train services between Milton Keynes Central and London, and between Milton Keynes Central and points north. Bletchley and Wolverton will also have improved services to London. 2.2 Funding for East-West Rail is now being sought from the Shadow Strategic Rail Authority (SSRA) for the western end of the line (Oxford-Bedford). Though the SSRA have permitted a bid only for a 60 m.p.h. single-track railway, excluding the Aylesbury branch and upgrade of the Marston Vale (Bedford-Bletchley) line, other Railtrack investment and possible developer contributions (yet to be investigated) may allow these elements to be included, as well as perhaps a 90 m.p.h. double- track railway. As this part of East-West Rail already exists, no form of planning permission is required; however, Transport and Works Act procedures are to be started to build the missing parts of the eastern end of the line. 2.3 New trains were introduced on the Marston Vale line, Autumn 1999. A study of the passenger accessibility of Marston Vale stations identified various desirable improvements, for which a contribution of £10,000 is required from this Council. -

Great Central Railway Robinson Class 8K 2-8-0 Locomotives (LNER & BR Class O4), and GWR Class 3000 By Peter Sheppard The first class 8K 2-8-0 freight locomotive was built by the Great Central Railway (GCR) at their Gorton works in 1911. It was to a design by J. G. Robinson. Later there was a large order from the Railway Operating Division of the Royal Engineers (R.O.D.). Class 8M (later O5) locomotives built around the same time were later converted to Class O4. Some locomotives were sent to France during the First World War and were returned. On at least two occasions batches of locomotives were loaned to the GWR by the LNER and then were returned. Some locomotives were bought by the GWR , LNWR and LMS. Some locomotives were requisitioned by the government in 1943 and sent to the Middle East, they never came back. Five more were requisitioned in 1952 and sent to Egypt. Others were sold to Australia and China. Added to this various different modifications were made to the locomotives and each modification formed a different sub class. There were 9 such sub- classes and these were numbered Class O4/1 to O4/8. The reader may think that those numbers total 8 and not 9. The explanation is that there were two sub-classes O4/2. The requirement for the first sub-class O4/2 had ended in 1924 so when a need arose for a new sub class in 1925 the vacant number was re-used. Details of the various sub-classes are given later in this article. -

The Steam Locomotive Table, v1 If you’re reading this; you either like steam trains, or want to know more about them. Hopefully, either way, I can scratch your itch with this; a set of randomizer/dice-roll tables of my own making; as inspired by some similar tables for tanks and aircrafts. Bear with me, I know not everyone knows the things I do, and I sure know I don’t know a lot of things other train enthusiasts do; but hopefully the descriptions and examples will be enough to get anyone through this smoothly. To begin, you’ll either want a bunch of dice or any online dice-rolling/number generating site (or just pick at your own whim); and somewhere or something to keep track of the details. These tables will give details of a presumed (roughly) standard steam locomotive. No sentinels or other engines with vertical boilers; no climax, shay, etc specially driven locomotives; are considered for this listing as they can change many of the fundamental details of an engine. Go in expecting to make the likes of mainline, branchline, dockyard, etc engines; not the likes of experiments like Bulleid’s Leader or specific industry engines like the aforementioned logging shays. Some dice rolls will have uneven distribution, such as “1-4, and 5-6”. Typically this means that the less likely detail is also one that is/was significantly less common in real life, or significantly more complex to depict. For clarity sake examples will be linked, but you’re always encouraged to look up more as you would like or feel necessary. -

Yeadon London & North Eastern 1847-1997 Railway collection Historical background: Willie Brayshaw Yeadon was born in Yeadon in the West Riding of Yorkshire on 28 June 1907. After his schooldays, he trained to become a mechanical engineer, and started work with Bradford Dyers, but was unfortunately made redundant in 1930 following the onset of terrible trading conditions. In 1931 he joined JH Fenner Ltd in Hull ('makers of improved beltings'), eventually becoming Sales Manager and then Marketing Manager, until his official retirement in 1972. He died at the age of 89 on 16 January 1997 in Hull Royal Infirmary after a short illness. By then he had become probably the country's leading authority on the London & North Eastern Railway and its locomotives. Indeed, Eric Fry, honorary editor of 'Locomotives of the LNER', writing in the 'Railway Observer' in March 1997, described him as possibly 'the foremost locomotive historian of all time'. Willie Yeadon's earliest railway interest had been the London & North Western Railway, with visits and family holidays to Shap summit and Tebay. On his removal to Hull, however, the London & North Eastern Railway became his main preoccupation, and he was particularly inspired by the development and progress of Sir Nigel Gresley's Pacific class locomotives during the 1930s. He began to collect railway photographs in 1933, and continued his interest after railway nationalisation in 1948. The British Railways modernisation programme undertaken from the mid - 1950s prompted him to investigate and record the history of every LNER locomotive.
