Durham : Pre-Construct Archaeology Ltd, 2006, 72pp, colour pls, figs, tabs, refs Work undertaken by: Pre-Construct Archaeology Ltd. Archaeological remains of Roman and medieval date were recorded at the site. The earliest features recorded included part of a large sub-rectangular pit in the north-eastern part of the site. This yielded Roman pottery from the second half of the 2nd century AD. Although the precise function of the pit was uncertain, the presence of a clay-lining suggested that it was designed to hold water. Another feature, possibly a pit, was partially exposed in the south-eastern corner of the excavation. A metalled surface overlay the small of the two pits and continued beyond the limit of the excavation to the south and east. A substantial was recorded in the western half of the exaction area. Four shallow pits recorded in the central part of the site yielded goat and cattle horn cores, suggesting that they related to horn working. A stone-lined well truncated the Roman ditch. The site also produced seven pottery sherds from a 13th/14th century vessel with a strap handle. [Au(abr)]

During an excavation at the site of the Listed building, natural sand was encountered below the present floor of the storeroom. It was truncated by a substantial pit, only partially revealed within the limits of excavation, which produced late 11th-early 12th century pottery, a probably iron fitting and biological remains indicating that the pit was utilised primarily to dispose of food waste. The refuse pit had been cut through by a linear north-west to south-east aligned feature, probably a robbed out wall footing. Fragments of pottery recovered from this feature dated to the 13th century. The alignment of the wall perhaps suggested that buildings fronted onto the western side of the Market Place during the 13th century. [Au(abr)]

This clearance revealed a large concrete pipe running north-south, parallel with the garden wall. It was believed that this was a duct carrying a steam pipe into the Castle from Hatfield College. The excavation for this large duct would have effectively destroyed any archaeological deposits that may have existed along the western edge of the garden. For this reason, no further archaeological work was recommended. [Au(adp)]

A desk-based assessment identified that a number of prehistoric finds had been made in the close vicinity of the development area. Archaeological monitoring showed that the street frontage had been levelled to the depth of natural geological deposits. This levelling was likely to have removed any medieval or post-medieval archaeological deposits from this area. Two gullies were cut into the natural geology. There were undated but filled with topsoil and therefore probably modern in origin. There contained some and iron slag fragments. No archaeological deposits were identified across the remainder of the site. [Au(abr)]

Archaeological Investigations Project 2006 Post-determination and Research North East

An archaeological watching brief was carried out and three trenches and two junction boxes were excavated. In the north-eastern corner of the box excavated at the junction of trenches one and two, a shallow feature cut into the natural clay. It was suggested that the feature represented a cut for the placement of entanglements or obstacles on the berm north of Hadrian's Wall. This kind of feature had been recorded to the north of the wall, previously at Buddle Street, Wallsend, Shields Road, Byker and Hexham Road, Throckley. If this interpretation was applied, the depth of the feature would indicate that considerable horizontal truncation of deposits in the area had occurred. If this was the case, it would also account for the fact that the feature was recorded in isolation, where a series of pits on the alignment of the wall would normally be expected on the berm. A feature was also recorded in trench one from which a number of fragments of human bone were recovered. These were possibly associated with the burial ground of the hospital of St. Mary in Westgate, which had a 12th century foundation. These might have been redeposited as the area was investigated in 1890 when a medieval cross slab grave cover was recorded to the east of the service trench. [Au(adp)]

An archaeological watching brief was carried out. Trench one revealed a cobbled/rubble surface faced by larger sandstone kerbstones. The precise alignment of this masonry could be further projected when landscaping between trenches one and five exposed a layer of burnt red shale, which lay just above the masonry and was associated with the surface. This masonry had been interpreted as representing a post-medieval street surface. Trenches five, six, seven, eight and ten contained a culvert from which no dating evidence was recovered. Trench seven contained a cluster of sandstone blocks suspected to be a demolished wall. Later excavations of trench eleven revealed better preserved stonework of the same wall. [Au(adp)]
