Abstract The study analyses the epidemiology of selected infectious diseases of 65 different species within the four families of bovids, cervids, camelids and equids in one czech and nine German zoos. It is based on a survey of all epidemiologic data since 1998. Furthermore 900 blood samples taken between 1998 and 2005 are screened for the presence of antibodies against selected viral and bacterial pathogens. The results are linked to the epidemiologic data. Introduction The concept of mixed species exhibits increasingly becomes important in European zoos. It is an important form of behavioral enrichment, it optimizes the use of space and it is of great educational value for visitors, giving them an impression of ecological connections. But until now it has not been elucidated whether the kind of exhibit may lead to an increase in the prevalence of specific infections. The aims of this study are to evaluate the exposure of zoo-ungulates to a variety of disease pathogens that can be transmitted between different species and to assess the epidemiology of mixed exhibits. We are interested in the following questions: 1. Which selected infectious agents are zoo ungulates exposed to? 2. What is the seroprevalence against these agents? 3. Is there a correlation between seroprevalence and the following factors: - animal exhibition system (single species / mixed species exhibit) - population density and animal movements - interspecific contact rates 4. -

Brucella canis is reported to be one of the most important bacterial species causing pregnancy loss in dogs. Dogs can be infected by 4 out of 6 Brucella species (B. canis, B. abortus, B. melitensis, and B. suis). B. canis is a Gram- negative coccobacillus first isolated by Leland Carmichael and is a cause of infertility in both genders. It causes late abortions in female dogs and epididymitis in male dogs. Generalized lymphadenitis, discospondylitis, and uveitis are shown as the other major symptoms. B. canis infections can easily be formed as a result of the contamination of the oronasal, conjunctival, or vaginal mucosa . Infection can affect all dog breeds and people. While morbidity may be high in infection, mortality has been reported to be low. Most dogs are asymptomatic during infection, and it is difficult to convince their owners that their dogs are sick and should not be used in reproduction. The diagnosis of the disease is quite complex. Serological tests may provide false results or negative results in chronic cases. Therefore, diagnosis should be defined by combining the results of serological studies and bacterial studies to provide the most accurate result. -

Abstract Understanding resource partitioning by predators is important for understanding coexistence patterns, with this becoming more relevant as historical food webs are altered through human impacts. Using scat analysis, we investigated the diet overlap of two sympatric meso-carnviores, the black-backed jackal Canis mesomelas and brown hyaena Hyaena brunnea, in Waterberg Biosphere Reserve, South Africa. Scats (n = 30 jackal, 42 brown hyaena) were collected in April 2012 from game and livestock farms. When comparing main prey categories (medium-large mam- mal, small mammal, fruit, invertebrate, reptile, and bird) we found little difference in diets, with both carnivores con- suming predominantly medium-large mammals (10-100kg). Bushbuck Tragelaphus scriptus was the most commonly consumed large mammal species for both predators. Jackal and brown hyaena had, on average, 1.3 and 1.4 main prey categories per scat respectively which resulted in diet diversities of 3.9 for jackal and 2.5 for brown hyaena. -

Vereinsinformation Veranstaltungskalender Wilhelma-Treff Tagesfahrt Neues aus der Geschäftsstelle 2021 Liebe Mitglieder des Fördervereins, das denkwürdige Jahr 2020 hat unseren Blick geschärft für das, was uns alle verbindet. Ganz nach- drücklich zeigen die Entwicklungen der Pandemie – aber auch deren Folgen für die vernetzte Welt- wirtschaft und die internationalen Beziehungen – wie eng verwoben die globalen Zusammenhänge sind. Deshalb dürfen wir uns gerade in einer Zeit, die uns in so vielerlei Hinsicht einschränkt, nicht aufhalten lassen, unsere Vielfalt rund um die Erde zu schützen und die Zukunft gemeinsam zu gestal- ten: mit Unterstützung für Artenschutzprogramme weltweit, aber auch dem Einsatz für den Erhalt der Biodiversität hier bei uns. So durfte der Betrieb der Wilhelma trotz der achtwöchi- gen Schließung keinen Tag ruhen. Die seltenen Tiere und exotischen Pflanzen galt es zu hegen und zu pflegen. Wenn das Leben weitergeht, ergeben sich auch schöne Ereignis- se. Hinter verschlossenen Toren kam im Frühjahr äußerst seltener und daher sehr wertvoller Nachwuchs bei den Okapis, Bonobos und Poitou-Eseln zur Welt. Später folgten zwei Kälber bei den in der Natur bereits ausgestorbenen Säbelantilopen. Liboso mit Sohn Kenai Solange keine Gäste in den Park durften, machten die Bauarbeiter aus der Not eine Tugend und brachten Wegesanierungen schneller voran, als das mit Publikumsverkehr möglich gewesen wäre. Und als im Mai die Wilhelma wieder öffnen durfte, konnten Mädchen und Jungen staunen, dass der neue Hauptspielplatz mit Regenwald-Motto in aller Stille fertig geworden war. Entsprechend der langen Tradition des Zoologischen-Bota- nischen Gartens ist es wieder gelungen, unseren Freundin- nen und Freunden etwas für die Wilhelma komplett Neues zu bieten. -

Farmlands that are grazed by livestock are often suitable habitats for termites and hence for the aardwolf. However, many farmlands are nowadays being intensely grazed and this, together with difficult climate conditions, can act as a threat against the biodiversity and the wildlife, including the aardwolf. To test if the grazing of livestock affects this animal, a comparison of the relative population density of aardwolves was made between an ungrazed reserve and a grazed farm in the semi-desert of Namibia. The study was performed between March and May 2004. The results imply that grazing at a medium level favours the aardwolf. It also seems as intense grazing negatively affects termites, and if that is the case, the aardwolf would be negatively affected as well. Another possible threat against the aardwolf is that it sometimes is being killed because of the misbelief that it attacks livestock. To get an idea of this problem a limited number of interviews were done with farmers in the northern part of Namibia. -

The implementation of this approach is extremely challenging particularly in developing countries due to expanding human population and demand for resources. Yet, information that is needed to guide managers and policy makers to develop effective conservation strategies is scarce in most of these countries. This thesis aimed to explore the impact of human activities on carnivore biodiversity inside and outside Tarangire National Park in Tanzania using camera traps, and to assess attitudes of agropastoralists towards carnivores using interviews. Results showed no significant difference in carnivore species richness between the park and communal grazing areas outside the park, but was a significantly different between the park and cultivated areas outside it. -

"Fish" means all varieties of the super-class Pisces. b. "Food fish" means all species of edible fish and squid (cephalopoda). c. "Migratory fish of the sea" means both catadromous and anadromous species of fish which live a part of their life span in salt water streams and oceans. d. "Fish protected by law" means fish protected, by law or by regulations of the department, by restrictions on open seasons or on size of fish that may be taken. e. Unless otherwise indicated, "Trout" includes brook trout, brown trout, red-throat trout, rainbow trout and splake. "Trout", "landlocked salmon", "black bass", "pickerel", "pike", and "walleye" mean respectively, the fish or groups of fish identified by those names, with or without one or more other common names of fish belonging to the group. "Pacific salmon" means coho salmon, chinook salmon and pink salmon. 2. "Game" is classified as (a) game birds; (b) big game; (c) small game. a. Page 1 of 5 Short Communication The diet of brown hyaenas (Hyaena brunnea) in Shamwari Game Reserve, Eastern Cape, South Africa Authors: Brown hyaenas (Hyaena brunnea) were introduced to Shamwari Game Reserve in the 1 Kerry Slater Eastern Cape Province during 2002, but their feeding ecology is poorly understood.
