2019Eir-ITALY.Pdf EUROPEAN y gathering 35 local scholars, experts, and civil society activists specialized in ISLAMOPHOBIA racism and human rights, the fifth edition of theEuropean Islamophobia Report addresses a still timely and politically important issue. All 32 country reports REPORT includedB in this book follow a unique structure that is convenient, first, for comparing countries and, second, for selected readings on a particular topic such as politics, em- 2019 ployment, or education with regard to Islamophobia across Europe. The present report investigates in detail the underlying dynamics that directly or indirectly ENES BAYRAKLI • FARID HAFEZ (Eds) support the rise of anti-Muslim racism in Europe. This extends from Islamophobic state- ments spread in national media to laws and policies that restrain the fundamental rights of European Muslim citizens and threaten the whole of society. As a result, the European Islamophobia Report 2019 discusses the impact of anti-Muslim racism on human rights, multiculturalism, and the state of law in Europe. This fifth edition of our report highlights how European societies are progressively over- whelmed by the Islamophobic discourse of the “Great Replacement” and other far-right conspiracy theories. The 32 country reports demonstrate how governments and main- stream media participate in reproducing such discourses that put the fundamental rights of millions of European citizens in jeopardy and how one can counteract these developments. This compendium of useful insights and data aims to provide European policy-makers, institutions, and NGOs with recommendations on how to tackle anti-Muslim racism in Europe seriously. All political parties are involved so that the migration issue has become an instrument to use (in different ways by right-wing or left-wing parties) to obtain additional consensus. Public actors do not seem to be aware of the social impact that their words or actions can have on the population expressing anti-Muslim messages. The new element that can be noticed is the trend to distinguish between Islam as a religion and Muslims as people. Attacks pretend to concern just Islam, defining it as extremist and a source of terrorists, and not to target Muslims who peacefully live in Italy and respect the local traditions. Considering the context, this seems to be a pretext which allows the perpetrators to avoid the accusation of being Islamophobic. These kind of attitudes have already expressed their concrete consequences: data shows an increase of verbal and physical assaults both in real life and online dimension. Tweets and messages posted on social networks show an augmentation of hate speech based on racial and religious discrimination. Even if the intervention of people defending Muslims from such attacks are numerous as well, the risk is that a climate of fear and tension grows among people. In 2019, the Casa Pound party was turned into a movement, exiting the election competition. This could be seen as a sign that right-wing extremist ideas gained less traction in Italy. Unfortunately, however, it can be explained by the fact that anti-migration and sovereign positions are now better represented by other po- litical parties, like the Lega Nord and Fratelli d’Italia that continue to increase their electoral consensus. 434 setav.org ISLAMOPHOBIA IN ıtaly Sintesi L’instabilità politica che caratterizza lo scenario italiano ha come diretta conseguen- za che i partiti politici sembrano essere in una continua campagna elettorale. ELECTRONIC MUSIC HISTORY THROUGH THE EVERYDAY: THE RAI STUDIO DI FONOLOGIA (1954–83) Joanna Evelyn Helms A dissertation submitted to the faculty at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of Music. Chapel Hill 2020 Approved by: Andrea F. Bohlman Mark Evan Bonds Tim Carter Mark Katz Lee Weisert © 2020 Joanna Evelyn Helms ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Joanna Evelyn Helms: Electronic Music History through the Everyday: The RAI Studio di Fonologia (1954–83) (Under the direction of Andrea F. Bohlman) My dissertation analyzes cultural production at the Studio di Fonologia (SdF), an electronic music studio operated by Italian state media network Radiotelevisione Italiana (RAI) in Milan from 1955 to 1983. At the SdF, composers produced music and sound effects for radio dramas, television documentaries, stage and film operas, and musical works for concert audiences. Much research on the SdF centers on the art-music outputs of a select group of internationally prestigious Italian composers (namely Luciano Berio, Bruno Maderna, and Luigi Nono), offering limited windows into the social life, technological everyday, and collaborative discourse that characterized the institution during its nearly three decades of continuous operation. This preference reflects a larger trend within postwar electronic music histories to emphasize the production of a core group of intellectuals—mostly art-music composers—at a few key sites such as Paris, Cologne, and New York. Through close archival reading, I reconstruct the social conditions of work in the SdF, as well as ways in which changes in its output over time reflected changes in institutional priorities at RAI.

Humanity trapped. The case of the two Roma women locked in the garbage cage in Follonica Roberta Salzano The story begins on February 23, 2017, with a video in which two employees of the Lidl supermarket in Follonica, Tuscany, after having caught two Roma women rummaging in a "metal cage" - the garbage space outside the supermarket - lock them up by blocking their exit with a forklift. Women react desperately. A third employee is filming the scene with his cell phone. "See, you can't get into the breakup corner!" referring to the unsaleable merchandise. The other two men laugh complacently. In a very short time, the footage is shared among the supermarket employees and then publicly broadcasted on the net. The police open an investigation for false imprisonment just after seeing the video on Facebook. One of the two women, Margherita, is thus traced. Police collects her statement and the identity of the three attackers is hence revealed. In the meantime, the video and several parodies1 of it go viral while the Lidl company is forced to issue an official statement to dissociate itself from the video content2. The post by Lidl on Facebook is echoed by hundreds of comments that criticize the management while expressing solidarity with the three men; they even threat to boycott the chain if they will be fired. The public opinion divided between those who attribute the episode to a clear example of xenophobia and racism, and those who belittle it, considering 1 In addition to several videos and even carnival disguises, so commented by the Mayor of Cascina (PI), Susanna Ceccardi: "Carnival mask yesterday at Cascina! It makes me laugh!! At carnival every joke counts! The comment refers to a photo, posted by the mayor herself on her Facebook page, that depicts a woman masked by one of the women locked in the cage and a man masked as a Lidl employee.

  • The Center-Right in a Search for Unity and the Re-Emergence of the Neo
The center-right in a search for unity and the re-emergence of the neo-fascist right Elisabetta De Giorgi a and Filippo Tronconi b aPortugese Institute of International Relations (IPRI), Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Lisbon, Portugal; bDepartment of Social and Political Sciences, University of Bologna, Bologna, Italy ABSTRACT In 2017, the parties of the centre-right camp – Silvio Berlusconi’sForza Italia, Matteo Salvini’s (Northern) League and Giorgia Meloni’sFratelli d’Italia – faced the puzzle of deciding whether to participate in the imminent general elections as allies or as rivals. On the one hand they had partially different aims (especially in relation to the European Union issue) and the problem of choosing the leadership of the alli- ance; on the other, the new electoral system, partially based on single- member districts, forced them to present common candidates in order to maximize their chances of reaching a majority of seats in parliament. In this article, we outline the stages through which the centre-right parties attempted to solve this puzzle over the course of the year, finally reaching an agreement to make a formal electoral alliance. In the final section of the article, we focus on one additional political actor of the right wing: the neo-fascist movements, notably Forza Nuova and CasaPound, which received significant media coverage during 2017. We describe how these movements were able to gain center stage and what this implied for the mainstream centre-right parties. In a way, the year 2017 began for the center-right on January 21 in Koblenz. On that date the leaders of the main extreme right parties in Europe came together in the German city for an event showcasing the visions and political aims that they shared.

Premessa. – 2.

ITALY The Pressure has Eased, but Media Coverage still Fails to Tell the full Migration Story Anna Masera The infinite emergency of international migration continues. Read through the eyes of Italian media, the year 2016 confirmed the centrality of the migration phenomenon, but the tone of the information flow of all major media outlets (press, television news and social media) was often more useful to the political debate than to supporting understanding of what is really happening: often the ideological point of view leaves out, or even contradicts, the clarity of the numbers.
