The group is open to disabled people, their families and carers as well as community and youth organisations. The aim of the group is to promote the inclusion and participation of disabled people, support each other to become active in the community and create awareness of the issues affecting our lives. 2 | Disability Action Collective Our work is informed by the issues of concern to members of the group and the wider community. It is underpinned by an understanding of the social model of disability. This model says that disability is caused by the way society is organised, rather than by a person’s impairment. It looks at ways of removing barriers that restrict life choices for disabled people. The group also works from a disability equality perspective. This is a belief that we, as disabled people, should enjoy equal rights and opportunities to participate in economic, social and cultural life, have choice and control over how we live our lives and are enabled to reach our full potential. 2 | Disability Action Collective Disability Action Collective | 3 The Social Model of Disability 1 ----- 2 ----- 3 ----- 4 | The Social Model of Disability 1 In the first image, it is assumed that everyone will benefit from the same supports. They are being treated equally. This is how the needs of many people living with an impairment or disability are often addressed. -------------------------------------- 2 In the second image, individuals are given different supports to make it possible for them to have equal access to the game. They are being treated equitably. Many advances have been made to ensure the equitable treatment of people living with a disability or impairment but there is more progress to be made. -------------------------------------- 3 In the third image, all three can see the game without any supports or accommodations because the cause of the inequity was addressed. The systemic barrier has been removed. 4 | The Social Model of Disability The Social Model of Disability | 5 Disabilty Action Collective strive to remove causes of inequity so that everyone is enabled to live to their full potential.
