  • Suburban and Urban Housing in the Twentieth Century
Suburban and urban housing in the twentieth century RUTH MCMANUS* Geography Department, St Patrick’s College, Drumcondra [Accepted 01 February 2011. Published 19 April 2011.] Abstract Ireland experienced dramatic political, social and economic change in the twentieth century, of which the shift from a majority rural to a majority urban population was one of the most notable. These changes are refl ected in the nature and form of the built environment. In this essay, the evolution of urban and suburban housing during Ireland’s fi rst urban century is considered. Existing patterns of unplanned middle- class suburban expansion were supplemented, from the 1920s, by a programme of planned working-class suburbanization. State intervention thus impacted on the location and form of new housing estates, while layouts owed much to the early British town-planning movement. High levels of owner-occupation in Ireland, the combined result of government policy and individual preference, were also refl ected in a preference for particular housing forms. The predominance of the standardised three- or four-bedroom, semi-detached or detached house, was not challenged until the 1990s when there was a surge in apartment provision, largely driven by tax incen- tives. Changing norms in terms of housing size, facilities and design were shaped by the standards adopted by government and local authorities, as well as to the pressures of the speculative building process. Introduction and The place called home, in an Irish context, changed little in the course of the twentieth context century, and yet it also changed dramatically. This apparent contradiction can be explained by the fact that, while the typical home at the beginning of the twenty-fi rst century remains the single-family detached or semi-detached dwelling, its location and context are now rather different.

  • The History and Nature of Irish Street Names
Names, Vol. 37, No.4 (December 1989) The History and Nature of Irish Street Names Breandan S. Mac Aodha Abstract Street names in Irish towns and cities reflect the historical periods in which those names were given, medieval through the twentieth century. The majority of these names can be traced to English words, although many streets have English-sounding names which can be traced to Irish words. Classifying these names reveals the many reasons for name origins, from descriptive through destination to commemorative. ***** The Growth of Irish Towns Relatively little is known about the origins of Irish urban life. It is quite conceivable that future research will reveal the importance of pre- Viking settlements throughout the island, just as recent excavations, notably those at Woodquay in Dublin (Wallace; 0 Riordain), have emphasized the role of Norse invaders and traders in developing the coastal towns of the east and south. Town life flourished in the Anglo- Norman period (1169-c.1300). The Viking ports were redeveloped and many new towns were established, often on the sites of former monastic settlements. These Anglo-Norman towns were concentrated in the southeast, in Leinster and east Munster, but they included important outposts elsewhere such as Galway in Conn aught and Carrickfergus in Ulster (0 Sullivan; Mc Neill). With the decline of Anglo-Norman power many of these towns shrank into insignificance or even disappeared (Glasscock), but a few new ones were established in the counties of Laois and Offaly during the reign of Philip and Mary (1553-58). The Tudor reconquest brought about a revival of urban life in the old southeastern heartland of English influence (Aalen, chapter 6), while the early seventeenth century saw the final decline of Irish power in the north of the island and the founding of a large ·number of new towns in the escheated counties of Ulster 345 346 Breandan S.

ARCHAEOLOGICAL, ARCHITECTURAL AND CULTURAL HERITAGE AWN Consulting Limited __________________________________________________________________________________________ 12.0 ARCHAEOLOGICAL, ARCHITECTURAL AND CULTURAL HERITAGE 12.1 INTRODUCTION The following chapter assesses the predicted impacts of the proposed development on archaeological, architectural and cultural heritage. The development is located in the townlands of Ballymanaggin, Gallanstown and Yellowmeadows, Dublin 22 (ITM 707785, 732380). The development will involve the construction of a data centre and additional ancillary infrastructure including a gas-powered energy centre. 12.2 METHODOLOGY The Record of Monuments and Places (RMP), comprising the results of the Archaeological Survey of Ireland, is a statutory list of all recorded archaeological monuments known to the National Monuments Service. The relevant files for these sites contain details of documentary sources and aerial photographs, early maps, OS memoirs, the field notes of the Archaeological Survey of Ireland and other relevant publications. Sites recorded on the Record of Monuments and Places all receive statutory protection under the National Monuments Act 1994. The information contained within the RMP is derived from the earlier non-statutory Sites and Monuments Record (SMR); some entries, however, were not transferred to the statutory record as they refer to features that on inspection by the Archaeological Survey were found not to merit inclusion in that record or could not be located with sufficient accuracy to be included. Such sites however remain part of the SMR. The record is a dynamic one and is updated so as to take account of on-going research. The Record of Monuments and Places was consulted in the Archives of the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht (see Appendix 12.1).
