Art Appreciation Lecture Series 2016 Collectors & Collections: classical to contemporary The Orleans Collection Mark Ledbury 2/3 March 2016 Lecture summary: This lecture focuses on the collection of Philippe II, Duc D’Orléans, Regent of France from 1715-23. The Regent’s purchase of Queen Cristina’s pictures, and his avid gathering of paintings from other sources, helped create one of the most magnificent collections of paintings in the world, displayed at the Palais-Royal, his Parisian residence. The lecture explores the importance of the collection at the moment of its formation and throughout the eighteenth century, as well as its fortunes during and after the Revolution. Slide list: 1. The Journal of The Journal of SanSan DiegoDiego HistoryHistory The Journal of San Diego History The San Diego History Center, founded as the San Diego Historical Society in 1928, has always been the catalyst for the preservation and promotion of the history of the San Diego region. The San Diego History Center makes history interesting and fun and seeks to engage audiences of all ages in connecting the past to the present and to set the stage for where our community is headed in the future. The organization operates museums in two National Historic Districts, the San Diego History Center and Research Archives in Balboa Park, and the Junípero Serra Museum in Presidio Park. The History Center is a lifelong learning center for all members of the community, providing outstanding educational programs for schoolchildren and popular programs for families and adults. The Research Archives serves residents, scholars, students, and researchers onsite and online. With its rich historical content, archived material, and online photo gallery, the San Diego History Center’s website is used by more than 1 million visitors annually. The San Diego History Center is a Smithsonian Affiliate and one of the oldest and largest historical organizations on the West Coast. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Balboa Park Cultural Partnership Contact: Michael Warburton [email protected] Mobile (619) 850-4677 Website: Explorer.balboapark.org Balboa Park Explorer Pass Program Resumes Sales Before Holiday Weekend More Participating Museums Set to Reopen for Easter Weekend San Diego, CA – March 31 – The Balboa Park Cultural Partnership (BPCP) announced that today the parkwide Balboa Park Explorer Pass program has resumed the sale of day and annual passes, in advance of more museums reopening this Easter weekend and beyond. “The Explorer Pass is the easiest way to visit multiple museums in Balboa Park, and is a great value when compared to purchasing admission separately,” said Kristen Mihalko, Director of Operations for BPCP. “With more museums reopening this Friday, we felt it was a great time to restart the program and provide the pass for visitors to the Park.” Starting this Friday, April 2nd, the nonprofit museums available to visit with the Explorer Pass include: • Centro Cultural de la Raza, 3 days/week, open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday only • Japanese Friendship Garden, 7 days/week • San Diego Air and Space Museum, 7 days/week • San Diego Automotive Museum, 6 days/week, closed Monday • San Diego Model Railroad Museum, 3 days/week, open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday only • San Diego Museum of Art, 6 days/week, closed Wednesdays • San Diego Natural History Museum (The Nat), 5 days/week, closed Wednesday and Thursday The Fleet Science Center will rejoin the line up on April 9th; the Museum of Photographic Arts and the San Diego History Center will reopen on April 16th, and the Museum of Us will reopen on April 21st. -

ADJOINING THE BRITISH GALLERY". % Admittance One Shilling.— Descriptive Catalogue Eighteen-pence, .In England, where there is no National Gallery for the reception of the chefs-d’oeuvre of the Great Mas¬ ters of the various schools, where the amateur or the student might at all times have an opportunity of improving his taste, or forming his. knowledge on works of art, every thing must naturally be considered as desirable, which can in any degree tend to afford facility for such study, or acquirements. The numerous applications which have been made to view the Collection of Pictures belonging to Prince •Lucien Buonaparte have induced those under whose direction it has been placed, to open the New Gallery, in Pall-Mall, to the Public, in the manner usually adopted in this country : they have also resolved to allow the Collection itself to he separated, and sold, in the same manner as the celebrated Collection of the Duke of Orleans; being convinced that Collectors will feel more satisfied in having an opportunity afforded them of gratifying their wishes individually, by a selection of such pictures as may suit the taste of each purchaser. 2 This Collection has been formed from many of the principal Cabinets on the Continent, during a period of the last fifteen years; and not only has the greatest attention been paid to a selection of agreeable subjects of the different masters, but also to the quality and state of preservation of the pictures themselves. -

Retired now, "Chuck" has been the head of design of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill's San Francisco office from 1955-1981. Those twenty-six years were a time of unprecedented growth and change to which Chuck not only bore witness but helped shape. Chuck Bassett was one of the SOM triumvirate of the postwar years: he was the West Coast counterpart of Gordon Bunshaft in New York and William Hartmann in Chicago. In 1988 the California Council of the American Institute of Architects awarded SOM, San Francisco, a 42-year award for "...the genuine commitment that the firm has had to its city, to the profession and to both art and the business of architecture." Although Chuck prefers to be known as a team player, his personal contribution to this achievement is unmistakable in the context of urban San Francisco since 1955. -
