Media nations: UK 2019 Published 7 August 2019 Overview This is Ofcom’s second annual Media Nations report. It reviews key trends in the television and online video sectors as well as the radio and other audio sectors. Accompanying this narrative report is an interactive report which includes an extensive range of data. There are also separate reports for Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. The Media Nations report is a reference publication for industry, policy makers, academics and consumers. This year’s publication is particularly important as it provides evidence to inform discussions around the future of public service broadcasting, supporting the nationwide forum which Ofcom launched in July 2019: Small Screen: Big Debate. We publish this report to support our regulatory goal to research markets and to remain at the forefront of technological understanding. It addresses the requirement to undertake and make public our consumer research (as set out in Sections 14 and 15 of the Communications Act 2003). It also meets the requirements on Ofcom under Section 358 of the Communications Act 2003 to publish an annual factual and statistical report on the TV and radio sector. This year we have structured the findings into four chapters. • The total video chapter looks at trends across all types of video including traditional broadcast TV, video-on-demand services and online video. • In the second chapter, we take a deeper look at public service broadcasting and some wider aspects of broadcast TV. • The third chapter is about online video. This is where we examine in greater depth subscription video on demand and YouTube. -

RIG response to The BBC Trust Review of the BBC’s national radio stations in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales RIG response to the BBC Trust Review of the BBC’s national radio stations in Wales About RIG The Radio Independents Group is the trade association for independent radio and audio producers in the UK. RIG has over 100 member companies, and rough estimates put the overall value of the sector at over £25m1. RIG has around 30 member companies based in Wales, making audio content for the BBC and commercial companies both in English and Welsh. RIG also has 6 members in Scotland. Overall comment on the Trust Review RIG is pleased to see the BBC Trust carrying out this review into Nations Radio. We passionately believe in the ability of a thriving independent production sector to increase the amount of innovation, ideas and talent available to the licence fee payer. This applies as much to Nations radio as it does to the major networks. For example one part of Wales is not the same as another and independent producers, based around that nation, can play a major part in sharing voices and perspectives from all of those areas. For the purposes of this consultation, RIG canvassed its members in both Wales and Scotland – there are currently very few producers making audio independently in Northern Ireland. On this occasion there have been no major comments to make about BBC Nations Radio in Scotland. Therefore the response is concentrated on BBC Radio Wales and Radio Cymru. We have sought to keep as closely to the remit of the questions as possible. -

Dean, School of Science School of Science faculty members seek to answer fundamental questions about nature ranging in scope from the microscopic—where a neuroscientist might isolate the electrical activity of a single neuron—to the telescopic—where an astrophysicist might scan hundreds of thousands of stars to find Earth-like planets in their orbits. Their research will bring us a better understanding of the nature of our universe, and will help us address major challenges to improving and sustaining our quality of life, such as developing viable resources of renewable energy or unravelling the complex mechanics of Alzheimer’s and other diseases of the aging brain. These profound and important questions often require collaborations across departments or schools. At the School of Science, such boundaries do not prevent people from working together; our faculty cross such boundaries as easily as they walk across the invisible boundary between one building and another in our campus’s interconnected buildings. Collaborations across School and department lines are facilitated by affiliations with MIT’s numerous laboratories, centers, and institutes, such as the Institute for Data, Systems, and Society, as well as through participation in interdisciplinary initiatives, such as the Aging Brain Initiative or the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite. Our faculty’s commitment to teaching and mentorship, like their research, is not constrained by lines between schools or departments. School of Science faculty teach General Institute Requirement subjects in biology, chemistry, mathematics, and physics that provide the conceptual foundation of every undergraduate student’s education at MIT. The School faculty solidify cross-disciplinary connections through participation in graduate programs established in collaboration with School of Engineering, such as the programs in biophysics, microbiology, or molecular and cellular neuroscience. -

On September 14, 2015, the newly upgraded Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) recorded a loud gravitational-wave (GW) signal, emitted a billion light-years away by a coalescing binary of two stellar-mass black holes. The detection was announced in February 2016, in time for the hundredth anniversary of Einstein’s prediction of GWs within the theory of general relativity (GR). The signal represents the first direct detec- tion of GWs, the first observation of a black-hole binary, and the first test of GR in its strong-field, high-velocity, nonlinear regime. In the remainder of its first observing run, LIGO observed two more signals from black-hole bina- ries, one moderately loud, another at the boundary of statistical significance. The detections mark the end of a decades-long quest and the beginning of GW astronomy: finally, we are able to probe the unseen, electromagnetically dark Universe by listening to it. In this article, we present a short historical overview of GW science: this young discipline combines GR, arguably the crowning achievement of classical physics, with record-setting, ultra-low-noise laser interferometry, and with some of the most powerful developments in the theory of differential geometry, partial differential equations, high-performance computation, numerical analysis, signal processing, statistical inference, and data science. -

Hernquist and Springel will divide the $500,000 award, and each will receive a gold laureate pin at a ceremony that will take place later this year. The award recognizes their transformative work on structure formation in the universe, and development of numerical algorithms and community codes further used by many other researchers to significantly advance the field. Hernquist was a pioneer in cosmological simulations when he joined the fledgling field in the late 1980s, and since then he has become one of its most influential figures. Springel, who entered the field in 1998 and first partnered with Hernquist in the early 2000s, has written and applied several of the most widely used codes in cosmological research. Together Hernquist and Springel constitute, in the words of one Gruber Prize nominator, “one of the most productive collaborations ever in cosmology.” Computational simulations in cosmology begin with the traditional source of astronomical data: observations of the universe. Then, through a combination of theory and known physics that might approximate initial conditions, the simulations recreate the subsequent processes that would have led to the current structure. -

All other work contained within are appropriately referenced to the best of the author’s knowledge. Abstract Whilst optics is one of the oldest field in science, there are still aspects of electromag- netism that we are only beginning to uncover. For instance, it was demonstrated that materials with simultaneously negative permittivity and permeability exhibit certain exotic behavior; where familiar physical phenomena, such as refraction, are reversed. As such, these materials came to be known as negative refractive index materials (NRIM) and their collective properties as negative refraction. One of the most important and remarkable property of NRIM is perfect lensing - the ability to transport both supra and sub-wavelength optical information from one surface (ob- ject plane) to another (image plane), forming images with unprecedented resolution, beyond the diffraction limit. Perfect lensing itself is a consequence of deeper sym- metries in electromagnetism, encapsulated in the language of transformation optics - with which we have both a descriptive tool to unify diverse electromagnetic con- figuarations, as well as a prescriptive tool to design media which bends light at will. While, such transformation medium and NRIM have been demonstrably realised using metamaterials, several challenges remain, of which loss is the major challenge. It is therefore under this trinity of concepts: metamaterials, negative refraction and transformation optics that this thesis is presented. -

AudioUK response to Ofcom call for evidence relating to BBC Sounds About the independent UK audio production sector 1. AudioUK is the trade body for the audio-led production sector in the UK. AudioUK has four core priorities: Business; Representation; Community; and Excellence – and has over 100 member companies based across the whole of the UK. AudioUK runs the Audiotrain skills programme. It also runs the Audio Production Awards, an annual celebration of the craft skills of audio production. AudioUK, along with Radiocentre, oversees the administration of the Audio Content Fund which distributes a grant from the UK government to fund public service content on commercial and community radio. As a member of the DCMS Broadcasting, Film and Production Working Group, AudioUK has produced guidelines for safe working in audio production during the coronavirus pandemic. 2. Outside of in-house radio and publishing production, audio production is carried out by a mixture of companies and self-employed individuals. In terms of companies we estimate there are between 180-200 SMEs spread around the UK. Traditionally audio production companies worked almost exclusively for the BBC, but activity has broadened out to podcasting, audiobooks and productions for commercial radio. The latter has been encouraged by the Audio Content Fund, which has created numerous new partnerships between indie audio production companies and commercial radio stations1. 3. We continue to support the existence of an independent and well-funded BBC, providing public service content to the Licence Fee Payer, nevertheless there is a real opportunity for the UK audio production sector to build its international reputation as a maker of first-class audio content, attracting more investment from partners such as podcast platforms, brands and national and international broadcasters.
