ABSTRACT This guide is a selective introduction to the major research tools in Canadiana found in the Fogler Library at the University of Maine. A brief description and explanation of the card catalog, Library of Congress Subject Headings, Library of Congress Classification System, and the Dewey Decimal System precede the annotated listing of specialized library reference sources on Canadiana. These materials are listed in 17 categories: general reference works; almanacs and annual guides; archives and manuscript collections; atlases; bibliographies; biographical sources; dictionaries; directories; dissertations; encyclopedias and handbooks; guides to instructional materials; indexes and abstracts; microform research collections (in process); newspapers; statistical references; government documents; and special collections. Concluding remarks inform students of the availability of a computer print-out periodical holdings in Canadiana; computer researches; a collection of current Canadian telegphone directories; and the services and activities of the Canadian-American Center, Canada House, on the Orono campus. A few. however, CLASSIFICATION are classified in the Dewey Decimal System used prior to 1967. The latter books, though older, may still be useful. An example of each classification is shown below:

There are also compilations of specialized Canadian dissertations on history, literature, political science, etc. in the Information Services area. However, 80% of all master's theses and doctoral dissertations are eventually :icrofilmed and cataloged by the National Library of Canada which also selle microform copies.These appear in Canadiana.
